lrdswrk00··on Language records reveal a surge of cognitive distortions in recent decades
Social media invented by US industry, that was mutated by Reaganomics.

Interesting.

lrdswrk00··on Agile at 20: The Failed Rebellion
You might try to accept the rest of us don’t jump through the hoops of having a financially thriving job for you.

It’s not to bring order to chaos. It’s to afford shelter, food, and healthcare.

Sorry, not sorry.

Perhaps you’d be happier living as a hermit, where you can organize as you wish; everything just so! without the rest of humanity, that does quite a bit of the heavy lifting for you, interfering.

lrdswrk00··on Amazon Is Creating Company Towns Across the United States
Yup, so is the original comment.

The meaning of all that “glitters is gold” applied to reality is arbitrary.

I don’t have obligation to recite some historical meaning the author might intend.

I can see Bezos as glittering now but not gold.

I can see accruing fiscal wealth as the same.

The only language with concrete meaning are the outputs of physical science experiment. There is or is not a physical object or force.

Colloquialism are subjective. The when and where to apply a math formula is subjective. Just because one can be defined such that it abides the order of operations of math doesn’t mean it represents reality accurately. Who eats still comes down to political influence.

We can help a lot more people thrive if we socially allowed for less rounding off of who is valuable. But since we prefer to do that; why not round off this community as unimportant? You’re all just as normal as anyone.

lrdswrk00··on Agile at 20: The Failed Rebellion
Who is they? The original authors have little to do with the administrative state that’s been wrapped around our agency.

Anarchy is no good.

Haha.

Your efforts are constrained by physical science, social objectives.

There’s plenty of structure to prevent anarchy.

But you would further impose problem solving constraints on others thought work.

Shit n hellfire; what a dumpster fire of a culture.

Would you say something as minimal as “E=mc^2” promotes anarchy? It hardly illustrates the full meaning of relativity.

Perhaps where you perceive emptiness and anarchy, others perceive correctness and order.

Like religion; one mans abstraction is another mans insanity.

lrdswrk00··on Americans' life ratings reach record high
Looking at raw numbers if always much more telling than cherry picked stats intended to sell an emotional narrative.

50-60% of 300 million+ people “thriving” means what for their other 40-50% of 300 million?

Comments like yours lead me to the same conclusion. I’d suggest people interact outside their usual filter bubble specifically, online or real.

lrdswrk00··on A Victoria man has gone two decades without money
> Who would wash the dishes?

Presumably the person who dirtied them. So they can use clean dishes and not get sick from mold growing from the old food?

Science has given us plenty of evidence to do as we do in a number of contexts.

Deferring to the politically empowered is an unscientific basis for economic activity.

We need not rely on the superstitions of dead men who were less educated than us.

lrdswrk00··on Agile at 20: The Failed Rebellion
They’re purposely ill defined.

The outputs they seek are emergent.

You also belittle scrum for becoming too specific.

Seems you’re still processing what to make of any of it.

Knowledge work is immaterial and should have no prescribed rails or all you get is run of the mill outputs.

It’s similar to business; billions have been spent investigating what technology or management style brought the biggest gains. The math quickly becomes so Byzantine there no meaningful conclusions.

No matter how detailed our consciousness will let us imagine, there’s still one reality ruled by physics. Esoteric math may be correct in that it has the order of operations right, but that truth doesn’t give it any real influence on physical reality.

lrdswrk00··on Without Enough Water to Go Around, Farmers in California Are Exhausting Aquifers
Seems presumptuous you would know what comfort means to humans in 100 millennia.

All while ignoring the discomfort millions within your own country experience today.

How nice of you to white knight for a future you won’t be around to witness and ignore reality as it is now.

I suppose reality now is too hard. May as well just keep going as you are and cross your fingers it matters in “100 millennia”.

That’s some self aggrandizing nonsense.

I have no respect for my countrymen. Still lost to imaginings of forever life. Even the ones who should know better.

lrdswrk00··on Without Enough Water to Go Around, Farmers in California Are Exhausting Aquifers
That’s up to the people occupying California at the time.

Humanity is doomed. I’m not saying we should accelerate it by leaning into YOLO.

But along with accepting our own personal mortality we might consider it’s time to socially accept our species mortality.

We don’t need to solve this problem right now and any work towards a solution isn’t guaranteed to last beyond our lifetimes, for numerous reasons outside our control.

Science provides the best model for understanding what economic activity our environment can sustain. Maybe it’s time to be the exceptional and gritty people we tell stories about being and rather than solve California’s eventual problem, try to hold it off by reducing or eliminating markets for bullshit.

Or we can pretend we’ll engineer our way out of a problem we have no idea how much time we really have to solve and cross our fingers like it’s a football game and feudal market economics thinking we’re simulating chaotic reality when it’s obvious political collusion and protectionism are occurring.

I wonder which way we’ll go

lrdswrk00··on Without Enough Water to Go Around, Farmers in California Are Exhausting Aquifers
Conversion of water into money is arbitrary; people need to eat.

Food isn’t a luxury. It’s a biological necessity and it need not be coupled to financial markets. We’ll grow food because we must.

Remember; fiscal economics were sold to a dumber general public by then poorer educated, yet rich, men.

Anyone clinging to their ways as an economic philosophy is effectively letting people who hadn’t come up with indoor plumbing dictate who we are.

lrdswrk00··on Despite Tuesday’s flight, Jeff Bezos is running out of time to save Blue Origin
Yes. It’s not what’s in the article but what it lacks; real criticism.

It does nothing to constructively challenge why we should let Bezos be in charge of saving the planet.

His billionaire adventures are doing quite a bit of damage to begin with, perpetuating shallow consumerism.

It neither denigrates nor deifies him. It’s a flaccid “both sides” emotional piece, leaving conclusions up to the reader.

Mine were that he’s part of the problem he’s trying to solve so why expect him to be anything else?

Bezos can’t escape being human and humans are destroying the planet.

lrdswrk00··on Despite Tuesday’s flight, Jeff Bezos is running out of time to save Blue Origin
Yet another in a number of Bezos fluff pieces I’ve seen in the last few days.

Oh, he wants to save the planet? Maybe his garbage spewing engine named Amazon could do something there.

Bezos is smart enough to know the odds of him saving Earth or an asteroid hitting in 30 years are about even odds right now, so sure, sell that but also figure by then he’ll be too old to miss out.

Humans sure love to live in the fantasy that humanity is forever well they needlessly consume the only planet known for certain to support their biology.

lrdswrk00··on We’re all teenagers now: The adolescent mindset transformed the US and the world
Adam Smith warned extreme division of labor would result in humans that were unimaginably stupid.

After figuring out the fundamentals of physics in detail the last 100 years, what else is there except engineering replacement technology and the same old utilitarian day to day?

It’s clear that more people are educated but we’re still clinging to that division of labor meme hard, and turning grads into dumb ass data entry chimps.

lrdswrk00··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
Daily != all day

Honestly, I only care about long term memory.

Short term was mutilated by todo apps and calendars already.

I want to reserve my memory for interesting ideas and moments. Not groceries and vacuuming.

This thread is making me think my way of prioritizing and doing is, not novel, but different than the replies is all.

I play guitar and piano, I don’t own a TV, I do use a tablet for movies but once or twice a week. I play Tetris on my kids Switch rarely, otherwise got bored with video games years ago, I don’t use social media. I exercise daily but don’t watch sports.

I have a lot less cultural “noise” in my face than many, yet I live in a big metro area.

Maybe that affords me the mental bandwidth to work with weed?

lrdswrk00··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
I am not a grower and have moved up consistently in my career over the last decade from IT helpdesk to devops lead, with a company that’s profitable, and currently many rounds of demos deep with two very big businesses I can’t even tell you what industry we’re in that’s how new and weird this tech is.

Sounds like you made being high your identity.

To me it’s like coffee (which I drink sparingly as caffeine messes me up worse; biochemistry shrug). I just consume it and go.

I’ve also never had an issue setting aside when I need to. If I want to interview, I can hop off cold turkey, give it 3-4 weeks to burn it out of my fat.

My career went nowhere before I started smoking, tbh. I was a Linux admin for nothing companies that don’t exist anymore; think mom and pop offices 20 years ago.

In the last decade I’ve worked for big tech, startups doing actually cool shit, and now for a really neat security company.

But that could just be the subjective experience side of reality leading to different outcomes for different people and have nothing to do with weed for either of us.

lrdswrk00··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
Maybe more people are borderline schizophrenic than we realize.

Cancer detection improved and people thought that meant cancer rates are up but, to my current knowledge, no one knows which is true.

I’m not going to accept this is marijuana causing schizophrenia given this. Society, their specific DNA, family life, could be, and marijuana use is merely exposing it, and enabling proper diagnosis.

lrdswrk00··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
I take the position that it’s your biochemistry reacting to them.

What words you label it as feeling like are subjective.

I notice people from all walks of life can feel entitled, and narcissistic. I’m sure some have been stoners.

lrdswrk00··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
Daily toker and edible eater; I’m high now. Hit the bong and a cartridge multiple times.

I’ve also successfully upgraded large chunks of my employers infra code; tests green, deploys green.

It’s no different than coffee to me at this point; I figured out working with those jitters and anxiety. I even saw shimmering with caffeine I’ve never seen on THC.

I’m pretty sure a whole lot of the behavior is just subculture stereotypes that become something like a truism; correct at any speed of light; which become hard to shake for most people (even smart ones).

Personal experience is the science of human existence. The anxiety of non-smokers isn’t an anxiety I have to take on myself.

lrdswrk00··on Kubernetes is our generation's Multics
You have to do those things WITH Kubernetes.

It doesn’t configure itself.

I focused on fixing Kubernetes problems at my last job (usually networking). How is that supporting the business (hint: it didn’t so management forced us off Kubernetes)

No piece of software is a panacea and shilling for project that’s intended to remind people Google exists, is not really putting time on anything useful either

lrdswrk00··on Lost world revealed by human, Neanderthal relics washed up on North Sea beaches
Future humans will say the same thing about us for letting non-God billionaires have disproportionate control of our economic behavior.

“They sat around playing banal number games, trying to manipulate each other’s agency, pointing at some other typical human called “Jeff Bezos”, seeking to get rich like him not realizing he’s actually protected by their consent to then contemporary political arrangements. They played along with all of it!”

The only difference is they’ll probably have a perfect digital record of our acquiescence to laugh at over.

lrdswrk00··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
I did both for multiple years. I know which one feels like work.

Go work 20 years of Friday and Saturday nights in a popular restaurant. Does not have to be the same one, as the expectation is the same.

The level of effort I need to put into coding dropped off exponentially.

As one ages the level of effort out into restaurant work goes up.

Let’s rely on science and not bias. Programming is still not sweatshop work on the regular. I work 4 solid hours a day.

lrdswrk00··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
I worked in a restaurant through high school and have been coding professionally for 20 years.

After a certain point, programming becomes less hard. It becomes a set of very familiar syntax snippets to copy/paste around.

Rushing around a kitchen in the heat, and often toxic, juvenile environment all week never changes… versus programming in your house?

Give me a break. You’re not coming close to putting the same real pressure on your body.

lrdswrk00··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
It is as a behavioral habit.

People always need to eat.

It’s not fiscally viable closed system. Restaurants operate on tiny margins and come and go as frequently as software startups.

We keep trying to hitch biological necessity to ridiculous memes of social capital accumulation, inventing more abstract and Byzantine math as if literal reality will implode if the rich can’t earn a profit.

Like healthcare, the routine is eating is obviously necessary. Is the industrialization?

lrdswrk00··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
Covid has made me question eating out at all.

It’s trivial to cook something that’s better tasting and healthier than fast food, most cafes. With all the practice in the last year, it’s not hard to come close to my favorite upscale restaurants for 1/4 of the price.

I don’t need to find a recipe, I can “just cook” now.

Eating out seems like an antiquated division of labor given how streamlined procurement (grocery delivery from anywhere), and no commute have made my life.

lrdswrk00··on Blue Origin first human flight
I’d ask their name and call them that.

I’m under no obligation to recognize anyone as anything but an average human without proof they’re actually skilled as they claim.

Titles are political euphemism. I want to know someone’s profile to know who I am dealing with. You’re a doctor? Of ants. Not helpful when I need someone that studied human anatomy.

None of these titles explain the training involved. The honestly gained skill set based on direct learning.

Bezos isn’t a genius; he’s a politically elevated person due to financial success. Humans will never live among the stars as the meat bags we are; far more likely we etch a simulated human consciousness into a new medium than adapt this biology. We’re just watching one guy get his jollies off at our political expense.

Titillate the masses to keep them politically disorganized. Humans used to wage holy wars, invade other nations to do that. Now it’s engineering and economic spectacle.

What a trivial and boring people I live among. Collectively setting themselves aside to ogle this stuff.
