lquist··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
Why does a stockholder have to reassert their rights to hold the stock that they already own?
lquist··on GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra produces proof of the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture [pdf]
It’s the second most important problem in all of graph theory on this database of open math problems:

https://www.openproblemgarden.org/category/graph_theory?sort...

Obviously not an exact measurement but to give you some sense of the importance of the problem

lquist··on Claude Skills
lol how is this not optimized for mobile
lquist··on Altered states of consciousness induced by breathwork accompanied by music
Are there any apps to experience this on a VR headset?
lquist··on Gemini Robotics
How does this compare to what Physical Intelligence is up to?
lquist··on Ask HN: What is the best method for turning a scanned book as a PDF into text?
My understanding is that Gemini OCR is now considered state of the art and a material step forward in OCR accuracy
lquist··on My Time Working at Stripe
My email admired by a billionaire? Bliss.

Hoping this is satire

lquist··on Starship Flight 5: Launch and booster catch [video]
What does Starship reusability mean for $/kg to LEO? I know there are longer term targets of $10/kg but that supposes efficiencies that aren’t here yet. Would be helpful to understand before Starship reusability where the state of the art was in terms of $/kg to LEO and where we would be with impending Starship reusability.

lquist··on Threads users down by more than a half
Meta has a history of churning out MVPs and doubling down on what works. Launching with a desktop client, EU, etc are in direct opposition to a lean MVP. Meta definitely has some missteps but not sure this is one.

Tying in to Instagram was what made it resonate with such a large audience vs all the other Twitter clones. Carrying over the social graph was a wise decision imho.

The Starship analogy makes little sense as well. Starship is not an MVP and well on track to continue to push forward the state of the art of rocket engineering.

lquist··on Closure, from why the lucky stiff (2013)
I would argue that it is the only programming tutorial that could be called literature.
lquist··on Impulse Space is betting on a future where launch is cheap
Mueller talks about “ pharmaceuticals, or materials, or semiconductors” production shifting to space. Can anyone expand on this please? What aspects of these industries is better done in space? How large (in revenue) are those portions of those industries? Thanks!
lquist··on Today is Y Combinator's 17th birthday
I was rejected by YC and still point to them (namely, the combo of PG’s essays and HN comment wisdom) as the greatest single source of startup advice as I’ve built a company in the 9-10 figure range. Thank you YC! You have done so much for the startup community!
lquist··on Apple Mac Studio
Why are they doing this? Trickle down effects for their mass market products? There is no way that the prosumer market is big enough to justify this distraction for Apple even if it used to be their core business line.
lquist··on Ask HN: Single-person creations that have stood the test of time?
Most great artistic works are the creation of a single human: Shakespeare, Mozart, Da Vinci, etc.
lquist··on Binance is taking a $200M stake in Forbes
Seems like an especially smart investment. Tycoons purchasing storied media assets usually have to contend with journalistic integrity when trying to push their agenda. Binance will not have any such challenges with Forbes.
lquist··on America’s Covid job-saving programme gave most of its cash to the rich
My business received about 1.25M from PPP. It was essential cash flow for us and helped save the business (from a cashflow pov) but it was also 100% a massive handout. On a systemic level it makes some sense I guess, but at a micro level it seemed like a bailout to the people who needed it the least. There is also basically no reason it had to be a handout vs an actual loan that required repayment.
lquist··on Tiny
A close friend of mine sold them a business. They are quick as advertised but pay bottom of the barrel multiples. Helpful if you need cash quick I guess.
lquist··on Pangea Aerospace successfully hot fire tests the first MethaLox aerospike engine
Is this a threat (or boon) to SpaceX?
lquist··on Starship is still not understood
Sure, but SpaceX trades on the private markets, not public. The minimum to get into SpaceX is $1m.
lquist··on Starship is still not understood
What am I missing here? Why is spacex valuation 100bn if this is true? I would think it would be 1tn easily in this kind of capital abundant environment. Is the risk that high? Is the market size being overestimated?
lquist··on Oculess – Removes account requirements and telemetry from Oculus Quest devices
What setup do you recommend currently?
lquist··on The Berkshire Hathaway of the Internet (2017)
For those interested, Barry Diller's IAC or Mark Leonard's Constellation Software might be better examples of a Berkshire of the Internet or Software, respectively.
lquist··on Stripe Press
I've got a bit of a hack when it comes to sussing out which business books are the best. I look at the endorsement quotes and check if they are quotes from practitioners or quotes from other authors. 90%+ of the time they are from other authors and I know that likelihood of quality is low. On the other hand, quotes from practitioners (and especially ones successful in their field) are worth their weight in gold. Stripe Press books pass this test surprisingly often.
lquist··on Udemy S-1 IPO
Interesting that the founding CEO owns only 1.5% of the company while the current CEO owns 2.5%. Wonder if this is because of secondary or dilution? How much does the other cofounder (Gagan) hold? I would have thought this was a huge success story for founders but it might not be?
lquist··on Launch HN: Level (YC S21) – Flexible financing for early-stage lending startups
How does this become big? As soon as your customers hit ~$10M in annual lending volume, it makes much more sense for them to go direct and cut you (and your fees) out.
lquist··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
Democratizing investing is akin to democratizing gun ownership. Yes, more people have access to the technology/service/etc. but is it really desirable?
lquist··on Lambda School lays off 65 employees
"which made the decision to make these changes very difficult"

Odd choice here. I think it's kind of textbook not to say that the decision to layoff people was hard on you.

lquist··on Setting up Starlink
Any way to track how many subscribers Starlink has on anything like a real-time (weekly or monthly would be awesome) basis?
