I'm mainly interested in coding/image creation tasks. Has anyone built out a server for a similar use-case and, if so, whats your experience been? What cards should I be looking into? Am I looking at spending ~10-15k for something that can give me near frontier quality/speed? I know about the DGX Spark/Mac Mini's, but I'd like to be able to upgrade later down the road.
As you’ve already stated, it’s an opinion and not a fact. I wouldn’t take posts like this so personally. Instead, use content like this to help you explore new tools. If you like it, great! If not, move on. Simple as that.
If you’re new here, people can be very passionate about their tools.
They weren’t perfect, but I want normal Hollywood studios to come back. There was a lot more on the line when it came to creating movies/series and a lot more effort went into creating them. It took actual talent to make something great, not data.
The same is happening in the music industry. I know pop music has more or less sounded the same throughout time...but these days its almost indistinguishable. Studios just pick a public figure to sing a generated song, it goes viral for a few months, rinse repeat. I have a hard time telling the difference between artists these days. Their vocal range/tone is almost identical in some cases.
We have an over abundance of choice when it comes to media and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. Its now a chore to sort through the garbage and find actual talent.
Sorry for the rant!
I've gone back to buying physical media and just put everything on my Plex server. The perpetual 'rental' model is a failing one and is not consumer friendly.
I gotta admit that its been liberating working outside the javascript/react realm. Using Go + HTMX + [insert tool here] has been a fairly easy transition. Is it a 1:1 replacement? No. Does it solve most of my use cases whilst providing a better developer experience? Absolutely.
I'm not trying to hate on React here. I just think its time to stop and ask ourselves "is this REALLY the best idea/tool for xyz?".
Happy to see USB-C on the iPhone (thanks EU) and no price hikes.
If memory serves, Thomas Edison used a 110v DC power supply to create a system of electricity for people. Meanwhile, Nikola Tesla invented the three-phase 240v Alternating Current (AC). Tesla was clearly a man ahead of his time (even by today's standards).
tldr; Europe's grid is vastly superior to America's.
My sweet spot has been Plex + Plexamp. I have a truenas server and created a 'media' nfs share for my Plex instance. I've been a very happy camper with this set up for the past 3 years. I can expand my storage at any time, ZFS is very powerful and gives me some backup options. Plex effectively replaces all my streaming service needs.
I've been gaming since the 90s and I'm generally unhappy with the current state of affairs.
Thank god for indie devs!
/end rant
I said that it's been in decline. If its unusable now, I'm not shocked because of the way it was headed even a few years ago. Musk very well might have realized the dumpster fire that is their API and shelved it for the time being.
> why is your take more credible than theirs?
What can I say, I'm just a simple user? Whether you find my "take" credible or not is purely up to you. ymmv
In the beginning, their API was a joy to use and a lot of neat software popped up around it. There was some drama around them making changes internally (API changes) which put some of these companies out of business. People became weary of their API since. That said, I would love to see a completely revamped API with great documentation.
That said, our budget for this war seems to have no cap and that does concern me (especially just after a pandemic). Responsible spending isn't usually a trait shared by either political party (or any government body, for that matter) so I really don't have much room to complain. There's always some angle or piece that's missing from the whole picture - and that's usually by design. The older I get, the more convinced I am that our government doesn't really like or care for its own people, and that its primary focus will always be outside our own borders. Call me a cynic, but I think America peaked awhile ago and we've been on a downward spiral that was turbo charged by 9/11.
Maybe I'm just tired. Either way, I wish George Carlin was still around.
I'm not exactly sure the origin of the smell. Perhaps its the silicon/plastic they use on the electronics? Maybe even the heat combined with all the rest of the components produces that unique smell that I love so much.
