lowlevel··on The history of Google messaging apps
The heart of the problem in my opinion is that Google is an ad company first. Their primary concern is selling ads. If a given product is not helping them target or sell their ads, it gets sunset. Google has a long history of ruining or killing everything they touch... and I don't expect this to change. Too many smart people there, not enough idiots.
lowlevel··on The Windows 11 insider build is surprisingly unpolished and unfinished
Rollback the wifi driver update of course.
lowlevel··on Ford, Google form 'strategic partnership' on cloud services, Android
I'm with you. I've had CarPlay and Android Auto in my past 3 cars, and could not be bothered to use them. I'de much rather just use built in navigation, stereo and local media. Involving my phone is just frustrating. Gerneralization, but for model years 2017 to present I've enjoyed Volkswagen's system the most. Chrysler's was not bad either. Ford's was terrible.
lowlevel··on Programs are a prison: Rethinking the building blocks of computing interfaces
Sounds like unix to me.
lowlevel··on Tables: Tracking work for teams
No joke. We have company policy now to not use google for anything.
lowlevel··on Dear Google Cloud: Your Deprecation Policy Is Killing You
I've been saying this about Google for a decade... everyone thinks I'm nuts.
lowlevel··on Google resumes its attack on the URL bar, hides full addresses on Chrome 86
Sounds about right... I am still cheesed that they're treating the address bar like where you search. For me, if the address bar does happen to go away, so does chrome.
lowlevel··on Self-hosting a blog for cheap and lazy devs
Lost me at step 1. There isn't an explanation as to why docker is a good idea... I feel it isn't, and I'm kind of too lazy to go figure if I'm wrong.
lowlevel··on New iPhone SE
Main thing for me is size in the hand and squared off sides. I find anything with rounded edges I can't hold on to and just hits the floor constantly... little better with a case, but that makes the phones just that much bigger and less comfortable. I can't bring myself to let go of the old SE's.... of which I keep two around just in case.
lowlevel··on Samsung: Anyone's thumbprint can unlock Galaxy S10 phone
Hmm... maybe someone elses will work better than mine... I can hardly get in.
lowlevel··on Trump proposes forcing hospitals to disclose discount rates with insurers
I can't help but think the fine is too low. It would be more profitable to pay the $100,000/year in fines than disclose the discounted rates. shrug
lowlevel··on CERN migrates to open-source technologies
My gut says this is related to forced updates and unwanted interface changes in current Microsoft products. It's been super annoying where I work, and staff are pretty upset.
lowlevel··on Dropbox silently installed new file manager app on users’ systems
Gonna try it... tried OneDrive but oddly enough, Microsoft Office documents and files are a complete pain in the rear to open/save there because the microsoft apps treats it differently than just a storage device.
lowlevel··on Howto: Block Amazon and any site using Amazon Web Services
Wouldn't it be easier to just turn off wifi and unplug the ethernet cable?
lowlevel··on Self-Driving Cars Have a Problem: Safer Human-Driven Ones
Exactly why I turn off all assist systems in our vw. I can't tell you how many times it misread the lines and nudged my steering into oncoming traffic. Eventually everyone will realize this stuff is just a bad idea.
lowlevel··on Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles
This brought a smile to my face. I've hated them since they first showed up. Kudo's Mazada. Kudos.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: What overlooked class of tools should a self-taught programmer look into
I second this... a lot of times, broken make files are standing between you and victory, so it would be good to at least have some familiarity with them.
lowlevel··on How the Apple Store Lost Its Luster
Yes. Picking up items at an Apple store still subjects you to mall parking hell, walking through the mall, finding Waldo to fetch your item and paying. I'de say pickup at Bestbuy or Home Depot is infinitely better... pickup desk generally at front of store.. ample parking steps away... in and out.
lowlevel··on How the Apple Store Lost Its Luster
I find the apple store uninviting and uncomfortable. They're generally packed with people standing around... you have no idea where to go or who is available... more obscurely controlled chaos than clear and apparent order. I feel visiting the store is generally going to be bad experience for most people.
lowlevel··on Oregon students returned thousands of fake iPhones, costing Apple $900k
Apple was losing billions in China. While this is just some of the phones trickling into other markets for replacement, it's still fraud and hurting Apple. This is why recently they've started to say iPhone exchanges had to be sent to depot rather than just replaced on the spot.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: Company is firing all employees – should I still exercise my options?
Personally I wouldn't touch it. We're going on 10 years of 'blockchain' being inappropriately applied to anything and everything and you can still count the winners on one hand. It's illegal to set money on fire... but that would probably have a better chance of paying off. This is not financial advice.
lowlevel··on Eliminating Robocalls
I have resorted to using DND mode as a whitelist. If a caller does not identify with a number in my contacts list, the phone doesn't ring. I feel whitelisting is the only thing that's going to stop the calls... extreme or not.
lowlevel··on Elon Musk Promises a Truly Self-Driving Tesla in 2020
Who is asking for this? Even if they can get them to not kill people and co-exist with human drivers... why would anyone want to own one of these? Why wouldn't you just hire/summon one as needed?
lowlevel··on Apple’s Latest Macs Have a Serious Audio Glitching Bug
I'm still using firewire.
lowlevel··on Apple’s Latest Macs Have a Serious Audio Glitching Bug
Generally, pro-audio users lag behind on OS updates and hardware updates. Apple generally has problems with audio with every new generation, and this is nothing new. When you count on something to work, you tend to buy the old models.. you tend to run the previous known good OS... you tend to avoid updating anything as much as possible. This is only getting worse as apples software and hardware quality are severely degrading over the past few years. Pro users are leaving left right and center.
lowlevel··on Ask HN: Is it practical to create a software-controlled model rocket?
This is immediately where I jumped to as well. A little too close to missile guidance if you ask me... likely to be illegal.
lowlevel··on Space Colony Art from the 1970s
I remember seeing these in some book when I was a kid... pre-internet... thanks for sharing.
lowlevel··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
I don't see anyone actually owning a self driving car, and hence I don't buy that they will be cruising to avoid parking. Why would anyone want anything to do with owning a car that could just be summoned at any time to taxi you where you need to go? No -40 gas-ups... no scheduled maintenance... no insurance.. no car payment...
lowlevel··on Ask HN: Why can’t I block all incoming calls that aren’t in my contact list?
I've wanted a whitelist only setting for a very long time... and I have also resorted to using the iPhones DND feature but instead of favorites I just use contacts.

Havn't heard from the fake CRA, chinese immigration or duct cleaners for ages... I do still get text messages so I'm not sure what people are talking about by 'all or nothing' ...

As far as I can tell, the only downside is anyone in my contact list can wake me up at 4am...

lowlevel··on Apple resumes selling iPhone SE at lower $249 price on its clearance store
Gonna check these sony compacts out.. thanks.
