lowkeynthorough··on Horrifying PDF Experiments
The researcher probably wasnt surprised, it looks like the person you replied to was surprised. Perhaps i was surprised that you were surprised? :)
lowkeynthorough··on Show HN: Tuchu – Automatically highlight the important parts of a document
Hey dang, is there a moderately strict guideline that says that Show HN articles should have source code? This post is somewhat interesting, but you can imagine marketers abusing the format.

lowkeynthorough··on Show HN: A DIY particle detector kit developed at CERN
any tips for ALPHA detectors :)? Somehow, those are significantly harder to DIY than beta/gamma..
lowkeynthorough··on Protein folding: Much more intricate than we thought (2017)
DeepMind actually solved harder problems than most of the ones mentioned. All the proteins mentioned in the article (except for the chaperones) are 100 amino-acid and shorter, the therapeutic ones are even shorter, dozen(s) of AA. Thus, great preview of what is to come, though its from (2017). C&EN is truly the quantamagazine of biochem...
lowkeynthorough··on Ask HN: What is your best native song that is unknown due to language barrier?
Thanks!! i have tried chasing that lead.. (found only childrens songs on youtube so I thought it might be based on a childrens song.. your posts above those were awesome but guess not the same style haha)

Also there was a deckhand on that ship called Henrik Wallgren[0], guess it could be the same person wonder how likely you think that is..

lowkeynthorough··on Ask HN: What is your best native song that is unknown due to language barrier?

lowkeynthorough··on Early Work
I think there is a kind of blind spot, if not contradiction, in the essay. It could be a good kind of paradox like the immovable object vs irresistible force thing.. it’s the paradox of lisp, of bel, of Julia, of mit style hacking.. they MIGHT aspire to be good jokes but as far as I can see they are at best, some kind of inside joke.. it’s a special kind of lame.. maybe we shouldn’t ask whether jokes can be ambitious but whether ambitions can be truly hysterically funny
lowkeynthorough··on Early Work
I think you almost hit the nail on the head.. it’s like a paraphrase of that saying about genius vs talent.. the difference between good work and great work is.. good work takes resources, but properly great work surprises us with how little it takes..

Taleb’s response at the time (2018; for reference; they are both profs at NYU)

The other commenters are more balanced than usual for a taleb thread.. well worth giving a look.

lowkeynthorough··on What are Differential Equations and how do they work?
Grad student here. I recently did the obvious NDSolve thing but Mathematica kept beachballing, and after heating up my computer tremendously returned an empty set. Turns out, my problem was really simple and I could solve it by hand.
lowkeynthorough··on Visual Explanation of the Conjugate Gradient Algorithm
Lol that trick also covers much of quantum mechanics, and relativity. (The gauge in “gauge theory” is a basis, btw)
lowkeynthorough··on The Native-American Origins of Gumbo
The active compound, the tasty AND toxic bit, is quite interesting. It binds to DNA and is also an MDMA precursor (ie safrole is on DEA watchlists)

Curiously, stackoverflow uses upvotes and downvotes too. How does that work?
lowkeynthorough··on Seeking Truth in a Time of Misinformation
I’d like to make a similar argument for traditional mass media.. Readers don’t get to have nuanced discussions with content producers (journalist, editors, etc). This leads to not necessarily prosocial tendencies exhibited in, eg, the NYT doxxing of SSC or Vice not doing Naomi Wu a solid. Perhaps this is what Taleb may ascribe to a lack of skin in game? In the social web there is however the possibility of getting burned by the mob, so hmmmm.
lowkeynthorough··on Why CoinDesk Respects Pseudonymity: A Stand Against Doxxing
This one seems most interesting: (Gary Weiss doxxes the NYT reporter who threatened to doxx)
