How does share dilution work? Does that mean issuing more shares? How does depreciating shares happen?
low_common··on Ask HN: How best to prepare for Python interviews starting in 3 months?
Grind Leetcode (in Python) and build a small full-stack project with his son. Django is written in Python so they could build a functioning web app with that. I recommend paying for Leetcode Premium - $35 a month - because it'll teach data structures/algorithms and have problems from big high paying companies.

Interesting that the Antarctic sea ice extent during July 2021 was above average; climate change is weird.

How do you "live amongst the Amish"? Sounds like you're contributing to their community in some ways ie. dam building. Did you buy any land from them or a home? Just renting? I always assumed that they're an insular community. Want to get down there sometime and try the food. PA Dutch food looks so good.
low_common··on Los Angeles urges everyone to mask up because of delta variant–even vaccinated
Covid doesn't affect children to the same degree it affects adults so no, I don't really care that it isn't approved for children.

Edit: Sorry, I did not read the article before reading your comment. The point was "what are you retiring to?" I understand what you're saying now.

Are you rich/have no kids? Because most people probably cannot relate to the life you're living right now.
low_common··on Los Angeles urges everyone to mask up because of delta variant–even vaccinated
Wrong move by public health officials here.

Good quote near the end of the article: “You just told the unvaccinated, ‘Yeah, get vaccinated, it’s so scary, but of course, you’ll still have to mask because it’s so scary,’ ” said Monica Gandhi, professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. “If I were an unvaccinated person who was debating whether to get vaccinated, I would think, ‘Oh wow, there’s no point, looks like the delta variant would break through the vaccine anyway.’ ”

If you're not vaccinated, apart from being too young or physically disqualified from it, this is all on you. If you get sick, that's your fault. I'm not wearing a mask again for you.

low_common··on Ask HN: Is it crazy that software developers have to study for interviews?
I've been on both sides of the interview table and I can't think of a better way to test someone's skills than breaking out a coderpad and having them solve a few problems. It sucks. It's a grind. We all know this. Yet if you're an engineer worth your salt, you'll pass a question like the "Valid Parentheses" question every time without having to study for it.

I'm not going to ask you esoteric trivia questions about the Go compiler. I'm not going to ask you to implement a BST. I do have to see you write something because my team has been burned in the past because we hired someone who could talk a big game but couldn't deliver. We didn't have them write code in the interview.

Answer this: would you hire a welder for your construction job without running them through a couple exercises first to see how good they are?

low_common··on The great bicycle boom of 2020
Biking in the city is its own beast - no bones about that.
low_common··on The great bicycle boom of 2020
I'm betting on this too. I'm already seeing some 2019-2020 barely-used $5000 bikes going for $2500-3000 on second hand bike sites right now. Can't wait to scoop one in a few months. I'm saving up for a carbon frame with Di2 myself haha.
low_common··on The great bicycle boom of 2020
I did the exact opposite as you. I was a commuter biker before Covid and then once that stopped, I got Strava and took my bike all over the five boroughs. I was biking 100 miles a week until December when it got a little too cold for me. I added a gravel bike to my collection and took that out of the city on weekends. 2020 was the year of the bike!
low_common··on Computer Science textbooks that are freely available online
Really helped me out when I was getting my CS degree. Some classes I'd use these free copies, but core classes ex. Algorithms I liked having the physical copy of CLRS.
low_common··on AirPods Max
I bought a $100 pair of bluetooth Sennheisers that have a battery life that seems to be measured not in hours, but in days. I use them all day every day while working in the office, at home, or coffee shop. Music sounds great and so do movies. Never have to worry about the bluetooth connnection, pairs to my Mac or to my work laptop just fine. And they got to me with Amazon Prime.

You do not need to spend $500 if all you need is headphones that do their job.

low_common··on Abolish the Police? Survivors of the Chaos in Seattle Aren’t So Sure
You need police in hospitals to maintain security for the patients in there. It's not uncommon to have incidents with people from the outside trying to assault/murder someone they know in the hospital. Criminals shot on the street still have to go to the hospital and this leaves an opportunity for their would-be-murderer to come in and finish the job.

Schools, it's sad but I'm in favor of school resource officers. Those people were good to have around and can serve as a role model.

None of these guys were getting paid to be bobsledders. I suppose they get endorsements and such, but they didn't become millionaires based on a salary alone.

"Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. What an incredible book. Starts off following this pizza delivery driver then warps into this cyberpunk adventure with VR, ancient languages and wild characters.
