Backend-engineer with more than 20 years experience, particularly in Telecoms and billing/finance, but with exposure to a number of other industries, eg travel, education. Have worked as a team lead in my last few roles, both coding and leading team to deliver projects.

I enjoy tackling side-projects in my spare time - this keeps my saw sharp and occasionally I create something I like to use. Always happy to pick up new techniques, skills, and languages. Continuous learning is something I strongly believe in.

Have worked on a variety of types of projects: Monoliths, distributed systems utilizing microservices, and (unfortunately) distributed monoliths.

Recent projects include: * document store for capturing customer statements billing and archival purposes, using apache jackrabbit, java and kotlin * rust aws cli client for dev/testing purposes * Migrating test suite from junit4 to junit5, non-trivial due to inheritance hierarchies.

Available for freelance, contract and full-time roles.

And yet you are wrong :)

lordfoom··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
> Had the EU forced tech companies in 2009 to use a micro-USB connector, would that mean they would still be on it now, and not using the (far better) USB-C connector?

They did exactly that, force micro-usb, but in 2010: https://www.engadget.com/2010-12-29-european-standardization...

And now it's upgrading to usb-c, so they do seem to be able to change with technology.

lordfoom··on Oldest and Fatherless: The Terrible Secret of Tom Bombadil (2011)
There is even an active sub-reddit of fans: https://old.reddit.com/r/GloriousTomBombadil/

And his absence from the films was remarked upon, negatively in my circles.

Director's cut all the way :)
lordfoom··on Mozilla prepares to launch MDN Plus in March 2022
I, for one, am encouraged to see Mozilla try and create new revenue streams.

I hope I am not the lone positive voice in the thread - it does seem no company gets quite the same level of criticism as Mozilla on HN

lordfoom··on Are Today’s Portraitists Better Than the Old Masters?
> abstract art that is arguably easier to paint than his earlier work.

Strong disagree. Expertise often looks easy. He had to understand the rules on a fundamental level before he could break them as he did, to express not just pictures but the underlying form and composition.

In my opinion it is harder to paint abstracts like Picasso did than it is to paint realistically.

lordfoom··on Thank You, Valve
> I mean, christ, the desktop user experience is still pretty goddamned terrible

Going to have to disagree with you there. The linux desktop experience is now superior to the windows desktop experience.

lordfoom··on Netflix’s Prices Are Rising Faster Than Cable
'"The goal," says Sarandos, "is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us." '

That was Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix in 2013, so they 'realized' at least a decade ago.

They've really pivoted amazingly from dvds to streaming other folks content to creating their own in the last 20ish years.

lordfoom··on How tumblr became popular for being obsolete
I recently became aware that my eldest child (13 at time of writing) prefers Tumblr as social media because of its "emptiness"
lordfoom··on Kosovo pulls plug on energy-guzzling Bitcoin miners
> Bitcoin is actually cleaning up the environment. At at this point still uses only a tiny fraction of the energy thrown away every year.

This is not true.

lordfoom··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?

Thanks for posting
lordfoom··on Against 3x Speed
I can recommend "the partially examined life" which features the person from "philosophize this" (stephen west I think?), along with a few others, where they discuss specific texts. Lots of rewindable moments.
lordfoom··on Jndi: An irresponsibly bad logging library
can confirm :D
lordfoom··on SF suspends cannabis tax to help dispensaries compete with drug dealers
That's, like, just your opinion, man.
lordfoom··on Interview with Hansen Hsu, engineer at Apple during transition from OS 9 to OS X
Just wanted to express my thanks to you for your podcast. Fascinating, educational, inspiring and sometimes a little tragic. Very cool!
lordfoom··on I get abuse and threats online – why can't it be stopped?
I don't think it's reasonable to expect journalists to be represented by PR firms online.

Given she's the BBC's disinformation specialist, it's also not reasonable to expect her to stay off social media.

lordfoom··on Looking into Odin and Zig
Very interesting and cool. Exciting things happening in this space.
lordfoom··on Gene Wolfe Turned Science Fiction into High Art (2019)
Hard disagree. I thought 'The Sorceror's House', as well as "an evil guest" and am currently thoroughly enjoying "a borrowed man". BOTS is his magnum opus, but I wouldn't call his latter work "lesser".
lordfoom··on DisneyMustPay Alan Dean Foster
>It's up to the government and the people to limit their scope, or not if they choose.

That sounds a lot like victim blaming, tbh, particularly given the influence corporations have on eg pollution.

In gab's case, the cure is worse than the disease
lordfoom··on Gitlab compensation calculator is not open to everyone anymore

lordfoom··on Laws of UX
I think "UI>UX" is very clearly saying that user interface is more important than user experience.
lordfoom··on YouTube Takes Down Chess Podcast for Being Harmful or Dangerous
This is a myth it seems to me. As far as I can tell, YouTube makes money. I'd be interested in sources that show otherwise, but not speculative sources.
lordfoom··on Bill Joy's greatest gift to man – the vi editor (2003)
> For instance, using 4 in-line keys for navigating a 2D space seems like a wasted opportunity.

It's actually awesome because your fingers are all on one row. It feels extremely intuitive after a while.
