looping8··on Skyvew – View and share Bluesky threads without needing a Bluesky account
Well, they're still in beta, even notifications weren't working that well up until recently. Plus, being closed off from the non-users might be a marketing thing. A lot of people were hyping it up with invites being seen as very desirable.
looping8··on Finland's ChatGPT equivalent begins to think in Estonian as well
I don't think that admitting an AI is in some way sentient would create a push to protect it. Animal testing is still very popular, despite there being no arguments about them being sentient. The tech industry isn't a moral leader and, based on some things major companies do, isn't even moral.
looping8··on How to cook ground meat perfectly without vision
That's really insightful, thank you! I didn't even consider that pouring a glass of water would be a challenge or that the common solution is an electrode.
looping8··on How to cook ground meat perfectly without vision
Forgive me if this is an insensitive question and feel free not to answer, but do you care about the way your food looks when it's done? I mean to say that many restaurants put a lot of time into how the dish looks, the way they put things on the plate. Do you completely disregard it or do you put the ingredients in a particular way that is convenient to eat?
looping8··on Why are there so many colourful houses in Bristol?
Yes, that is why I asked. I wasn't criticizing their choice, I wanted to know why it was made, the cultural reasons or circumstances behind it.
looping8··on Telegram get remote IP
My client has P2P only for contacts by default, I 100% have not changed anything about settings. The rest are not P2P by default.
looping8··on Why are there so many colourful houses in Bristol?
Is there a reason why they used those specific colors? I don't understand why a hospital would be yellow or a police station would be black by default. My guess would be white and blue, respectively.
looping8··on Metric Time
It seems to be, yes, at least according to my calculations. For me it is almost 11, so the metric clock is past 4, close to the middle.
looping8··on Firefox tooltip bug fixed after 22 years
It's the same thing with games - whenever a game from a studio known for "broken" titles comes out, people post compilations of strange things happening, and it just never happens on my end. Natural bug resistance, perhaps.

However, I do frequently get an innocent bug, where opening my bookmark toolbar's extension (the >> icon in the top right) results in it displaying all the bookmarks in a drop-down list, instead of the ones not appearing on the toolbar.

It could also be about the power balance. These small towns probably always had to do adjustments to fit what London wanted, because bigger cities always have priority. It's not surprising that they fought back against orders from the leaders, questioning authority when you have no power is natural.
looping8··on What Is Appropriation in Art?
Is it considered controversial to say he made great art? I don't know what he is seen as in USA, but many of my circle still play his old albums because they are modern classics. He's not liked as a person but it's hard to deny Kanye's influence and quality.
looping8··on What Is Appropriation in Art?
I would say only pop art is appropriation. Because it literally copies a different piece of art to exist. But it also adds a layer on top of it, changes its purpose, which means it starts with appropriation but then becomes interpretation.

AI also doesn't put any meaning into its "art". People argue that an artist's intent is not the main factor in art, but when there is no intent, is it really art? I don't need to know what Warhol meant, but knowing that he did mean something makes it valuable.

looping8··on Adam? ... is there a reason your laptop is in the fridge? (2006)
But in cases like the one in the article, the damage doesn't matter that much, no? Their highest priority were files, so they did what they could to save them. But yes, just putting a piece of electronic in the fridge for a test is very risky.
looping8··on Openmoji
These are very pretty, I really like the line breaks when an element is added over the face, such as in "face with tears of joy" or "star-struck". But some of them look a little off for me, like the skull or the baby emoji.
looping8··on Pockets: A History of Carrying Capacity
It's funny that pockets were a feminist thing so long ago but they still are. Women's jeans don't always have them and a lot of girls I know have complained about it. Never had this problem as a man.
looping8··on We’re all just temporarily abled
Not reading the article or engaging with the points it makes also makes things weird. Each of us has a fragile body and at any moment, you might become broken in a way you can't fix. When you can't walk up a hill, hold a job - the world becomes hostile. Even going down a road that isn't asphalt but stones is a challenge for some people. That is a consequence of young and healthy people designing our world and the things in it, while others have to adapt. It is not about privilege, it's about smart design and understanding that the problem can very easily apply to us all. One fall down the stairs, one stroke, one bad day at the gym - you have injury for months or for life. It's a real danger.
looping8··on A History of Clojure (2020) [pdf]
The Goodreads list has "Programming Clojure by Stuart Halloway", I guess it's an error or included more as an introduction to Clojure?
looping8··on Is the aircraft in this image real?
Fits well in this case, thank you. I did just see the logo and stopped paying attention to it immediately, I think, so it's the same circumstance.
looping8··on Is the aircraft in this image real?
Wow, I noted it looked strange and spotted some things other people mentioned, but somehow completely missed the windows... I'm sure there is some sort of name for this thing of not spotting the obvious while getting the details.
looping8··on Security.txt file now mandatory for Dutch government websites
A lot of people just don't care about writing to the right address. I did work for a university and the most random people would get emails aimed at completely different departments, staff or even a different university. I don't mean old people or clueless young students, I mean some press contacts, some other academics and people like that.
looping8··on Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?
But how exactly do they choose British accent instead of a Canadian one or an Australian one or whatever?
looping8··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
Nintendo is extremely resistant to change and compromise, there is probably zero chance they will do it. Remember that, even as they make excellent games, they reject a lot of modern aspects of gaming. Like they used to ban Twitch streams and YouTube let's plays of their games.
looping8··on Creator of Catan, Klaus Teuber, has died
RIP, this man's creation helped me and my friends make many boring evening better. Also lead to arguments but that's okay, was part of the fun. He really left a huge legacy.
looping8··on What we look for in a resume
It's remarkable that, for an industry that prides itself on having individualist approaches and everyone doing things their own way, everyone somehow also keeps trying to give universally true advice.

That said, the title is, explicitly, "What WE Look for in a Resume". The intro makes it clear this is about them and them only and is more of a transparency report, an encouragement for others to be more open too. So I wouldn't blame this particular post of trying to be too general.

looping8··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
For me it is mostly COVID's fault, because people my age definitely stopped partying as much as they used to. Some are still worried about it, many just realized during lockdown that they don't even like "parties" in the traditional form. We still get together but it's usually a quiet dinner thing, not dozens of people in the same room, drinking and dancing and whatever else. Even karaoke is not as popular in my circle since being in a closed space with people opening their mouths wide feels weird.

I think smaller parties like housewarming and barbecue are still fine though, but maybe it depend on the country.

looping8··on Show HN: Terra Firma, a playable erosion simulation
Personally would like to see this developed deeper instead of branching into gaming goals. Then maybe it can one day be optimized to fit into an existing game's framework? Imagine Civilization 7 or 8, years down the line, having tech like this? Reshaping continents to spread your influence would be so amazing.
