looperhacks··on Fuse is 95% cheaper and 10x faster than NFS
This article is a random collection of claims without sources or even explanations how the author came to the conclusions.

- NFS has the "pro" of being POSIX compliant, but I can't see how a FUSE device is different in this regard - FUSE allegedly supports local caching and lazy loading, but why can't I cache or lazy load with a NFS share? - NFS apparently has a high infrastructure costs - but FUSE comes for free? Then, the author compares cloud offerings, which should make the infrastructure concerns moot? - the cost calculations don't even mention which provider is used (though you can guess which one) and seemingly doesn't include transfer costs

There's even more I can't be bothered to mention. Stay away from this post

looperhacks··on Byte Buddy is a code generation and manipulation library for Java
I haven't used micronaut specifically, but I remember using Quarkus when it was rather new. It also does a lot at compile-time compared to, say, spring. The one big disadvantage I noticed that it's had to eject if you need to defer something to runtime for some reason. Don't know if it's still an issue, but that's really the only disadvantage I remember
looperhacks··on How to teach your kids to play poker: Start with one card
> First - the fact that it's played for real money.

Don't play for real money then. I played a lot of poker with friends, but never for money - everybody gets the same amount of chips at the start and the winner is the last man standing (i.e. the winner of the random all in once most players are out, usually)

looperhacks··on Show HN: Kitten TTS – 25MB CPU-Only, Open-Source TTS Model
I remember that the novelization of the fifth element describes that the cops are taught to speak as robotic as possible when using speakers for some reason. Always found the idea weird that someone would _want_ that
looperhacks··on Algorithms for Modern Processor Architectures
Akchyually! These days, Java uses Latin1 if no characters outside Latin1 are used. Only if full Unicode is necessary, it uses UTF-16
looperhacks··on Facts don't change minds, structure does
The church knew that the earth was round. Which is largely irrelevant, because Galileo argued for a heliocentric model vs the (at the time popular) geocentric model. Nobody argued that the earth was round
looperhacks··on Why AO3 Was Down
Maybe don't: https://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Don't_Do_This#Don.27t_use_s...
looperhacks··on Mixed DPI in X11
macOS doesn't handle it at all, a window is never visible on multiple screens at the same time.

Low DPI screens are near unusable anyway on macOS without subpixel rendering

looperhacks··on Break Up Big Tech: Civil Society Declaration
This is a European initiative, we are already backdoored by other companies from other countries. I'd rather work with a company I can take to court/that is governed by policies I can vote for or against.
looperhacks··on Ancient law requires a bale of straw to hang from Charing Cross rail bridge
If the law is useless and there is political capital then surely the legislative body can vote to abolish it with minimal fuss.

A bit tongue in cheek, of course - but I can't image the amount of unnecessary work regular continuation of _every_ law would cause. Time limits on laws are already a thing, but it shouldn't be a default.

looperhacks··on Show HN: eInk optimized manga with Kindle Comic Converter (+Kobo/ReMarkable)
This sounds great!

I never got to reading manga on my Paperwhite 4(?) because the scaling made the text terrible to read (that was with KOReader a few years ago). Does this tool handle this better?

looperhacks··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
Not all cheating sends "bad data" to the server. Cheats like wallhacks or aimbots are purely clientside and can't be detected on the server
looperhacks··on What It Takes to Defend a Cybersecurity Company from Today's Adversaries
Is there any way to recognize adversary IT workers? Not many companies have the capabilities of cybersecurity experts
looperhacks··on New antibiotic that kills drug-resistant bacteria found in technician's garden
Can't answer this particular question. But I remember hearing that developing new antibiotics is not very profitable - To minimize resistance building against new antibiotics, old antibiotics will be used until they are no longer working. So new antibiotics just won't sell that much for now.
looperhacks··on Show HN: I made Confetti: a configuration language file format
> Quick to parse

eh ...

Okay, maybe it's quick. But it's also surprisingly hard to do "right". Just look at libexpat. Sure, many issues could be prevented with another programming language. But there are still regular updates because parsing custom entities is a minefield.

That said, I also like XML for all the other reasons you mentioned. Just don't do it like Maven.

looperhacks··on Browsercraft: Java Minecraft in the browser
You could always play Minecraft without an account. But you can't join most servers that enable authentication checks
looperhacks··on Blue Ghost lander captures sunset shots on moon before falling silent
The moon gets _really_ cold, way below spec for most electronics. That's why sensitive parts are sometimes in a heating component, but that also depends on the battery. And yes, cold batteries might not recover properly.
looperhacks··on Creative Fansubbing Techniques: Part 2
I can't give you the exact episodes, but the series:

Blurry Text For Fuzzy Hearing: Dimension W Fading Text For Fade Transition: Made in Abyss Reflected Text On Reflecting Surfaces: Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Onscreen Text Imitation: First Flip Flappers, then KonoSuba Onscreen Text Substitution: First Flip Flappers, then Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Subtitle Text Distortion: Again, Flip Flappers Karaoke: Flip Flappers Masking: Alice & Zoroku

looperhacks··on Practical UX for startups surviving without a designer
The page does not recommend them directly, but also doesn't discourage them. In fact, it requires "guidance", which IMO might as well be a strength indicator.

> Verifiers SHALL offer guidance to the subscriber to assist the user in choosing a strong password

looperhacks··on An epic treatise on error models for systems programming languages
The "sum" and "product" is more about the cardinality of the type. If you have a type A with 3 possible values and B with 5 possible values, then the sum type X = A+B has 8 possible distinct values while the product type Y = A*B has 15 possible values
looperhacks··on Cognitive load is what matters
We use it to automatically instrument code for tracing. Stuff like this is IMO the only acceptable use to reduce boiler-plate but quickly becomes terrible if you don't pay attention.
looperhacks··on Making Your Connection Bad
Is there a html standard thingy to tell the browser "This resource is optional, don't load it if the connection is already slow"? I'm thinking of optional fonts, JS or maybe changing the quality of images. You could probably do this in JS, but it'd be pretty helpful if there was a standard for this
looperhacks··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
We're being compensated for being available (more on weekends and holidays) and get additional compensation for every 30 minutes incident response. Two incidents in one night? Twice the money. Additionally, we are required to work less the next day (we're also required by law to have at least eight hours of free time between two work days. So if you get an incident seven hours after you got off work? Congrats, you now have to wait eight hours before you can start working. This is of course very annoying, so nobody does that)

I'm not even sure if doing on-call duty without compensation is legal in my country.

In the past, there were some cases of "fake" incidents, but the amount of documentation makes sure that the company is able to crack down on this.

looperhacks··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
I'm not sure if my team is a crazy exception, but here's how our on-call works: We're usually on from Monday-Monday (with exceptions if we say, don't have time on Wednesday or something), but every team decides the time on their own. During work-hours, every team member is responsible for responding to alerts (but usually, only the on-call engineers will carry their company-provided phones and are the first to respond).

Outside work-hours? Most alarms (if they happen) are due to bad alarm configurations. Because nothing ever happens. There was one alert this month, and it was because a randomly generated ID contained the string "ERROR" and was logged due to a warning.

I know that my company isn't the "biggest" (only a few hundred requests per minute) and traffic amount is mostly correlated to usual business hours in my country, so there's just not much happening at night (but never zero traffic). Still, I'm always surprised that other companies seem to have really stressful on-call shifts, because the most annoying part to me is having to carry my laptop if I leave my home for more than 20 minutes.

looperhacks··on Two undersea cables in Baltic Sea disrupted
Russia already demonstrated that they are able to take down satellites [1] and that they can interfere with Starlink [2]>

looperhacks··on Two undersea cables in Baltic Sea disrupted
Our governing coalition just split and there will be early elections (most likely) in February. Nobody has a majority right now, any anmouncement is currently unlikely. In fact our lovely head of the Government just reaffirmed that we won't send taurus to the ukraine.
looperhacks··on Git and Jujutsu: In Miniature
> no one says "I am avoiding large grocery stores because they force me to make too many decisions"

I say that. I 100% prefer going to the smaller store if I don't need anything "fancy" because the large offerings stress me out.

That said I'm fine with git and don't care about Jujutsu, so I don't know what that says about me :)

looperhacks··on I discovered mysterious hidden signals on a public radio channel (2013) [video]
I think nobody has to prevent abuse because listeners will either turn off traffic alerts or switch to a different channel.

Besides that, FM broadcasting isn't a lawless place and is regulated by the government. Abuse will most likely lead to some kind of penalty, but I can't be bothered to read through the laws to confirm it :P

looperhacks··on Please do not write below the line
Pedantry time! At least in Germany, the "Rundfunkbeitrag" is not a tax, but more like a fee. Taxes go into the overall budget of the collecting party who then uses a part of the budget to fund something. The broadcasting fee can only be used for the broadcasting system and does not go through the country's budget. This means to increase the broadcasting budget, the fee has to be increased and it can't be subsidized by increasing the budget without increasing the tax.
looperhacks··on Type 2 diabetes: New treatment eliminates insulin for 86% of patients
Note: This is about diabetes type 2, not type 1. Might be worth to editorialize the heading in this case.
