> And I believe this was a way to annotate that something was… fixed, maybe? Or on its way to being fixed?

A "Rotte" is the crew working on railway construction. So I assume this is a label to warn that personnel is on the tracks

looperhacks··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
> Which former employer is going to make a quick buck? The grid operator or the grid operator lobbyist?

Well, both. Katherina Reiche was CEO of Westenergie until she joined the current government; and was, at the same time, listed as a lobbyist. She also caused controversy when she presented a plan for energy politics that was _very similar_ to plans by major electricity providers (including the parent company of her previous company). Or when she directly asked the electricity provider EnBW for better arguments why we should build more gas power plant (directly violating lobbying laws). That's just a small excerpt; the list of controversy is long.

But tbh, I don't think there's a big conspiracy about the empty gas tanks. Yes, Reiche is most likely corrupt (which is a huge deal), but afaiu, the gas tanks are empty because nobody wants to pay for the gas right now.

PS: Just today, Reiche ordered Sefe GmbH to stockpile more gas [1]. Sefe is conveniently a public company. So private companies don't have to buy expensive gas, because the public is going to take care of it.

looperhacks··on There is more to code review than (automatable) detection
We're using Github Copilot to review some of our PRs (the functionality that's built-in into Github directly). Man, I hope that people are using better agents for code review. Because if Github Copilot is in any way comparable to what the "machines will review all code soon" people are using, then I'm really worried. It's nowhere close to "good". It can find some obvious things, but it misses too much and has too many wrong findings.
looperhacks··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
It doesn't, sadly. The new kid on the block, Morphe (there was some classic open source drama) directly gives you the link to the correct apkmirror page, don't know if revanced also did this. But it makes things easier. Tbh, I only update every few months, it's bearable
looperhacks··on Analyzing Frontier Model Progress with My Favourite Game: Prince of Persia
If I remember correctly, back then all "good" entries in the contest solved the game by syncing with the RNG and could basically predict where and how new asteroids would spawn. The difference between entries was planning ahead movement and residence against control issues due to the contest setup (like inputs getting delayed). I wonder how Astra managed so much better, I thought the problem was already solved
looperhacks··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
And what brings you to this very wrong impression?
looperhacks··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Not that I agree with the comment you're replying to - but I find this response funny, when just today there was a link on the front page about the US military bombing a school because of AI output
looperhacks··on JetBrains Air: A System of Products for Agentic Software Development
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but isn't a sizeable part of the article about how Air can be used with any agent (section "The future is multi-vendor")
looperhacks··on How do traffic signals work? (2019)
What's your issue with traffic in Germany? I know it depends on the city/state, but it always seemed pretty okay to me (though I haven't been driving much in other countries, so I don't have that much experience with "better" systems)

From what I've seen about US traffic, there doesn't seem to be much to be envy of.

looperhacks··on Why building a Rust LSP is hard
That would require the editor to be able to build an AST - defeating the point of LSP, because now the editor needs to know every possible language again

Google Streetview isn't opt-in, it's opt-out. But it was used so much that Google simply gave up for a while.

Blurring faces (and I assume license plates) was a thing before they started serving imagery for Germany

looperhacks··on Restroom Archive
You will usually see these in public places that have no other access controls - think in a park, rather than in a restaurant. It's for places that have a high risk of people sleeping in them.
looperhacks··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
A misfeature is specifically a feature that's just bad, while verschlimmbessern can happen with everything that nobody would call a feature (insert something about xkcd 1172). But yeah, it's pretty close
looperhacks··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
It's certainly used - not in the top 100, but if the situation calls for it, it's not unexpected.

There's a big difference between enshitification and "Verschlimmbesserung". The latter has the intent of actually improving things, while the first is making things knowingly worse for profit.

looperhacks··on The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded
Sorry guys, it's my fault. Every time I try to get into nix, there's a new community meltdown. I just installed NixOS yesterday ...
looperhacks··on The title cards in Blade Runner are amazing
While yes, the opening and title cards are very good, I can't get over the (imho) pretty "meh" layout of the crawling text. The right margin is very jagged (especially the "Replicant"), even when it doesn't appear to be necessary (notice that in "Replicants were used Off-world as\n slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and\n colonization of other planets.", the "slave" could've fit into the first line and "colonization" could've been hyphenated). If necessary, they also could've changed some of the wording for better typography. Also, the last two sentences weirdly seem to have different left margins.
looperhacks··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
I agree with everything you say, but the initial "Atomausstieg" was decided in 2000/put into law in 2002, when the Greens were in office. The exit was delayed in 2010 (and then accelerated again in 2011) by the CDU/CSU/FDP, but the initial decision for the exit was very with involvement of the Green party
looperhacks··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
"You can't change the past" really isn't fatalism
looperhacks··on More German than many Germans
Not an immigrant, but I still have to get appointments :D

It really depends on where you are. In some parts you can do a lot online, in other places you have to do everything in person. Sometimes you can book an appointment online and something will be available today; sometimes no appointments are available at all. Sometimes you just show up. I'm from Berlin and it was absolutely awful for years - nowadays you can usually book an appointment within the same week.

looperhacks··on Solid Queue 1.6.0 now supports fiber workers
I don't know Solid Queue or the rails environment, but I expect that not every worker will create it's own connection, there should be a connection pool in-between
looperhacks··on Europe's fires are just the start
Jevons paradox is often claimed, but largely irrelevant in this case, imo. If the demand rises, the price rises again, as well. It doesn't force anybody to keep using fossil energy
looperhacks··on Europe's fires are just the start
> If we did that, meltwater water supply would essentially stop (in somewhere between 8 months and 2 years), everywhere on the planet

How? Why? Meltwater comes from the temperature difference between summer and winter, how does it have anything to do with this?

> Any variable that depends on the temperature delta that we depend on will rapidly become problematic if we stop accelerating global warming.

What variable depends on a temperature _delta_?

> Now I live in Europe. I don't expect water problems here (or only temporary).

We have water problems right now. Agriculture has problems, nuclear reactors have to shut down because of too warm(France) or missing (Romania) water. Dry forests leading to more fire.

> I know the theory behind green parties is "let's just stop doing what humanity is doing, and nature will save us".

I have never heard of this, I have a hard time that anybody relevant claims this.
