longtimelistnr··on The New York Times Mini Crossword Is No Longer Free to Play
Yes, each day the game maker creates a timely and relevant crossword. So in this case the person behind it is the loss

Because for the typical office - documents are strewn about on random network drives and are not formatted similarly. This combined with the inability to nail down 100% accuracy on even just internal doc search is just too much to overcome for non-tech industry offices. My office is mind blown if i use Gemini to extract data from a PDF and convert it to an .xlsx or .csv

As a technically minded person but not a comp sci guy, refining document search is like staring into a void and every option uses different (confusing) terminology. This makes it extra difficult for me to both do my regular job AND learn the multiple names/ways to do the exact same thing between platforms.

The only solution that has any reliability for me so far are Gemini instances where i upload only the files i wish to search and just keep it locked to a few questions per instance before it starts to hallucinate.

My attempt at RAG search implementation was a disaster that left me more confused than anything.

longtimelistnr··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
I notice this as well, i think it is because the autocorrect is turned off and we may just be so used to it learning our typing habits that our "raw" typing is really that bad

longtimelistnr··on Designing a flatpack bed
Yes we've had this discussion with management before when discussing CV short comings. Pathetic offering of a program, and simply would not pass even the most basic usability tests in other fields. Microvellum afaik is only a better program "in theory." I have not heard much positivity from actual users.

I am in the same boat, daily user of Cabinet Vision. Did you know the same founder made both and sold them off within a few years of one another?
longtimelistnr··on Drafting Software Recommendation
As someone who uses such software for a living, i concur. Hand drawings work just fine. Not to mention, any fabricator worth their salt will have no problem interpreting it.
longtimelistnr··on The death of partying in the USA
at least in my parents neighborhood, the open garage or the pool with a non-privacy fence, or the front/side porch are all hangout spots where other neighbors will walk by and join you for conversation

longtimelistnr··on Touching the back wall of the Apple store
i remember it very well, i bought a Sony at F.Y.E. at the mall. as a child, my mother insisted on Sony as it was reputable brand (thank god because they truly were better devices). But the non-Zune/Sony/iPod selections were all duplicates of the same garbage, this was ~2007.
longtimelistnr··on Snow - Classic Macintosh emulator
I have a large collection of vintage Mac's and peripherals, with the largest quantity being the Apple Keyboard II [1]. Archive forums all suggest the Belkin ADB Adapter [2] but that has long since been retired. I would like to make my own, i know instructions exist for a raw passthrough.

Well i know this is sarcastic but have you seen the preferred design language of the Oakley founder? Exposed circuitry is righttt up his alley.
longtimelistnr··on Ask HN: What is the best LLM for consumer grade hardware?
As a beginner, I also haven't had much luck with embedded vector queries either. Firstly, setting it up was a major pain in the ass and I couldn't even get it to ingest anything beyond .txt files. Second, maybe it was my AI system prompt or the lack of outside search capabilities but unless i was very specific with my query the response was essentially "can't find what youre looking for"
longtimelistnr··on Google’s unfinished DeX-like desktop mode for Android
Funny you mention stage manager, i remember the absolute online letdown/meltdown that happened when it didn't ship with the iPadOS version it was scheduled to. The other day i encountered the button for it and completely forgot it existed, but after launching it, I remembered how useless it is.

shout out to mixxx, a truly excellent piece of free software
longtimelistnr··on Mac app launches slowed by malware scan (2024)
Never saw a CAD app boot fast... Shapr3D is the best but something as advanced as Fusion or Solidworks has always been slow to open
longtimelistnr··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
Wow yeah you just made me remember the Windows 10 mail app, which sure wasn't perfect but was ad-free and relatively snappy if I remember correctly. Then absolutely destroyed it and now I have to see Outlook 2016 and Outlook (new) as the results when I search "mail" from the taskbar

longtimelistnr··on Sam Altman said startups with $10M were 'hopeless' competing with OpenAI
i sure hope it doesn't. i can't see how anyone gets fooled by him. if anything he inspires me to try and get a cool $10M and bounce on investors

longtimelistnr··on Hunyuan3D 2.0 – High-Resolution 3D Assets Generation
Frankly i think you cannot get past your own delusion about AI and no argument will change your mind. No one can make you appreciate art properly and I can only hope one day you will.
longtimelistnr··on With Core One, Prusa's Open Source Hardware Dream Dies
Yes I agree, I suppose my point was as soon as Bambu went mainstream that entire Prusa appeal was killed
longtimelistnr··on With Core One, Prusa's Open Source Hardware Dream Dies
I follow 3d printing pretty close but can't claim to be an expert. With that said, I truly thought they served different consumer segments with the only overlap being those who bought a Prusa pre-assembled beleving it to be a one stop shop machine. Bambu is a black box from China for an end user with little knowledge or care of maintaining a machine themselves (down to printing replacement parts)
