lokerfoi··on The Bitcoin bubble – Greater fool theory
Other motivations exist when using deflationary currency other than hoarding. I don't believe btc deflation is bad.

Fiat currency can also rise and fall 10% in a single day. Problem is that moving the market that much in every day is impossible due to a huge market cap, which BTC does not have.

All cryptocurrencies are not user friendly. Cold, hot wallets, privacy issues, what is the best way to store them, how not to accidentally lose everything etc.

Mass adoption depends a lot on user friendliness which a bunch of cryptographers aren't concentrated on solving.

So, it won't be used as a currency not because of its deflationary nature but because it's just not as convenient as fiat currency.

Scaling issues are also a big blocker. Currently, BTC transaction fees are higher than those imposed by banks. It's no longer a cash, just a store of value.

Core devs are behind a private company, trying to milk the blockchain even more, which will also lead to bitcoin not being used as cash, but they'll sell their own sidechain and offchain solutions, probably just to enterprise.

Blockchain tech is great tech. Cryptocurrencies like Monero are absolutely brilliant. But I'm doubtful of mass adoption, mostly because torrents, free software, as amazing as they are, and convenient for superusers, don't have mass adoption too.

lokerfoi··on Parity Wallet security alert
They'll fork it to unfreeze millions of funds.

It's just funny how decentralized currency is so easily swayed by a few individuals to serve their purpose.

lokerfoi··on Parity Wallet security alert
They'll fork it again.

The language used is unsafe, and developers didn't test properly.

What can be done? Fork I guess.

Or maybe leave the developers developing on the Ethereum platform to just fail?

lokerfoi··on Diary of an African Cryptocurrency Miner
Yeah. The moment I heard of it I thought this would be the ultimate goal. But it turned out to be a value store for the first world. No longer is it electronic cash, more like electronic gold.
lokerfoi··on The Scientific Case for P≠NP
Really? Could I see some examples? Most results I've seen are on fixed approximation algorithms not on heuristics.
lokerfoi··on The Scientific Case for P≠NP
One of the best public examples is LKH solver for travelling salesman. I'm not familiar with problems for which proving optimality of a solution to a specific problem instance is not accomplished.

For example, for travelling salesman and vehicle routing there are many instances with known optimum.

Even for those unknown tight bounds are easily achieved.

lokerfoi··on The Scientific Case for P≠NP
What made me realize that P?=NP is not that important for practical issues is the unbelievable effectiveness of heuristics. They seem to get extremely close to the optimum than best approximation algorithm known for the problem.
lokerfoi··on Sugar alters hormones and metabolism, sets stage for obesity and diabetes
Commenter above me equated sugar with carbs, and hinted a government conspiracy theory of how its recommendation influenced people to overeat sugar and become sick.
lokerfoi··on Sugar alters hormones and metabolism, sets stage for obesity and diabetes
Fiber has 0 calories, which implies people in the US in general barely eat fruit and vegetables. No one overdosed on fiber. It's quite silly to claim that 2000kcal of legume carbohydrate (more than 300 grams of carbs) will alter my hormones or metabolism in a negative way, so demonizing a macronutrient is bad science.
lokerfoi··on Sugar alters hormones and metabolism, sets stage for obesity and diabetes
Is he bashing vegetables and fruits? The average US citizen does not eat the recommended minimum amount for fiber. Is he bashing the 3500kcal diet of average US citizen or is he purposefully demonizing a single macronutrient group?
lokerfoi··on Problems with MacBook butterfly switch keyboards
Just read it and after about 4 months my B needs extra presses to work. Jinxed myself.
lokerfoi··on The Mars company has sponsored hundreds of studies to show cocoa is good
75% is pretty standard in Europe. I've tried a couple of 99% cocoa chocolates too, but these are really for the hardcore lovers (gets glued to the teeth and other taste issues).
lokerfoi··on Is Haskell the right language for teaching functional programming principles?
With unsafePerformIO you can do printf anywhere. There's also Debug.Trace.
lokerfoi··on Invasive species could increase the risk of disease for humans
Is it so hard to just put microchips that identify the owner into these animals?

Just imagine how easy it would be to punish the citizens releasing animals into the wilderness if micro-chipping was mandatory. No need to ban imports, nothing.

lokerfoi··on OnePlus OxygenOS built-in analytics
Of course not. One of the reasons why this kind of industry popped out of no where is because these kinds of things are not regulated. If they were, targeted ads would be a much harder problem.
lokerfoi··on The Absurdity of Nobel Prizes in Science
If European Union got the Nobel peace prize, then so can an organization behind LIGO experiments.
lokerfoi··on Infinitely many twin primes
I wouldn't call it quackery. It's mad people doing proofs that sound good in their heads.

Or sometimes naive people doing the same.

lokerfoi··on The rise and fall of Ext JS
Can you perhaps point me to old concepts that are used in vuejs or react libraries like mobx?

To me their approach seems absolutely brilliant, pushing even event handling to completely declarative code.

lokerfoi··on The rise and fall of Ext JS
What's the best way to migrate from ExtJS (50k LOC codebase)?

They had many excellent components, buffered lists, grouping in lists, tree panels etc. So many useful components.

Is there an alternative?
