logn··on Firefox’s new streaming and tiering compiler
Rust -- https://github.com/koute/stdweb

C++ -- https://github.com/mbasso/asm-dom

I don't know exactly how these work but Emscripten allows interop both ways (embedding JS in native code and calling native code from JS) -- https://kripken.github.io/emscripten-site/docs/porting/conne...

logn··on Firefox’s new streaming and tiering compiler
@sjrd is talking about limitations for JS not other languages.

C, C++, Rust and others already have their own DOM/JS support.

WASM is exciting for statically typed languages especially. JS is not the target. It might eventually benefit from faster parsing but that's not the motive now.

logn··on Deutsche Bank makes source code publicly available for the first time
I bet it's Java.
logn··on Selenium with Headless Chrome on Travis CI
In some contexts it might be easier to use my project https://github.com/machinepublishers/jbrowserdriver which requires Java/JavaFX (no external browser bin). Chrome Headless is a godsend though.
logn··on Toward Go 2
My guess as to why people in Java use generics so much and switched to them so quickly is the squiggly yellow lines in their IDEs. A lot of Java code is easier to read/write with explicit and implicit casting and no use of generics. And the type erasure makes for sometimes unintuitive behavior at runtime. Being familiar with Java, I appreciate Go's skepticism toward generics because maybe just maybe they'll figure out a way to add them after the fact in an elegant way.
logn··on Ask HN: As a Developer, what API would you like to use, but does not exist?
> supply an url and get back plain text from the page

I would like to have someone (a Java or Kotlin developer) take over https://github.com/MachinePublishers/ScreenSlicer and rework it. It's a project that intends to do exactly this. You enter a url, it finds a search box, enters the user's search query, uses single-layer neural nets and text munging to extract the search results, and then separates each result into a few fields (url, date, title, summary).

But it was written as a complete app and so is of limited use to most people. If it were remade to be a library it would have much more utility.

Beware there are lots of ugly regexes and terrible hacks. This is html afterall, the Cthulhu way.

Recently re-licensed from AGPL to Apache 2.0.

Also my time is busy on other things. I would be able to answer some questions occasionally but largely I can't provide much help.

logn··on The road to Java 9: Modular Java finally gets OK'd
I'm relieved to see how this turned out. Very reasonable path forward. Was concerned that Java 9 would break everything which thankfully that has been averted, yet progress can still continue on making Java more useful with modularity.
logn··on The slow death of the electric guitar
Guitar Center never adapted to the electronic era and are now being run by bankers to squeeze as much money out of the business as possible. They will go the way of Radio Shack.

It's a lot easier these days for young people to mess around with Ableton or Fruity Loops and make music alone than save every last dollar to buy a cheap instrument and try desperately to find the drummer and bass player which were always in short supply.

The guitar will be on more equal footing with every other instrument and hardware that musicians/composers use for live performance. There is still a need to perform music and people like seeing musicians do something, whether it's fiddle knobs or play an instrument. And there will always be something magical about an instrument that fully digital electronics will never have.

logn··on Chess.com stopped working on 32bit iPads because 2^31 games have been played
When I typed the word "may" I meant it. If it's medically established that properly diluted vinegar dries the skin I'd be interested in knowing that. Otherwise, it seems like reasonable speculation to me rather than pseudo-scientific BS.
logn··on Chess.com stopped working on 32bit iPads because 2^31 games have been played
"harsh soaps, detergents, and perfumes, [...] tend to dry the skin"

logn··on Chess.com stopped working on 32bit iPads because 2^31 games have been played
Wikipedia says one cause of dandruff is yeast-like fungus. Perhaps PH plays a role in that. Also vinegar has cleansing properties and may be less drying than detergent, and dry skin is another cause of dandruff.
logn··on Code boilerplate: Is it always bad?
You can write code like Hemingway (simple) or like Shakespeare (dense). Hard to say whether one is better than the other without some attempt to quantify and measure things. Seems more like just a preference.

In regard to boilerplate the author brings up an interesting point that with a good language, the boilerplate can effectively disappear once all the code has been written. If people are worried that boilerplate violates DRY, I think they worry too much.

The best way I've found to determine whether a codebase is good or not is to take someone who's never worked with the code before and ask them to fix a bug or make an enhancement. If that's an excruciating task but would have been easy in a greenfield project, the code sucks.

logn··on Noncompete Clauses: Signing Away the Right to Get a New Job
Employers are in a unique position to offer group health plans. This used to be more relevant before Obamacare and is becoming relevant again. There is no equivalent to a group health plan one can buy individually.
logn··on N.S.A Halts Collection of Americans’ Emails About Foreign Targets
Ah so that lends credence to my rationale for scraping websites. Until I actually look at the scraped data no scraping has taken place so no terms of use have been violated. When I look at the scraped data the terms of use come into effect but now I'm personally present so no robotic scraping has taken place.
logn··on Want to rescue rural America? Bust monopolies
These are called group purchasing organizations and a lot has been written about them. Here's an article that also discusses this particular syringe: http://washingtonmonthly.com/magazine/julyaugust-2010/dirty-...
logn··on PhantomJS: Stepping down as maintainer
I maintain a web driver too (Selenium-based) and have been wondering about how it would compare to Selenium ChromeDriver headless. Mine is built in Java and uses Java's embedded WebKit. If anyone has feedback this is where I'm discussing it, https://github.com/MachinePublishers/jBrowserDriver/issues/2...
logn··on Ask HN: Will Rust ever become a mainstream systems programming language?
If "functions as a service" (AWS Lambda) takes hold, I think Rust will be a popular server language since you'll need services with almost no startup/warmup time.
logn··on Brands need to fire adtech
I think the author is trying to stay focused only on the issue of adtech vs (as he calls it) Madison Avenue ads. You also raise relevant points but they can be separate issues.

Anyhow to your point, I think the problem is that YouTube creators don't really think of themselves as being sponsored by brands. They've internalized only that they get paid to make content people watch. And that's not entirely accurate.

But for all the problems the author identified with adtech it has afforded people such as those on YouTube to enjoy what may be a fleeting era of getting paid to be genuine and uncensored. Perhaps membership fees to the platform that get allocated to creators can succeed here.

logn··on Modules vs Microservices
It shouldn't be too hard to set up some common code for making service calls. If the service isn't responding, the caller compiles and starts it, assuming some env variable is set to signal it's a dev machine. I've done this for my project.
logn··on Ask HN: Docker, Kubernetes, Openshift, etc – how do you deploy your products?
http://rancher.com/ works with minimal fuss. The tools in this space are so much in flux I just care about something working easily and reliably in the short/medium term.
logn··on Java Without If

    public List<Integer> add2(File file) {
      List<Integer> resultList = new ArrayList<>();
      for (int i : ListUtils.emptyIfNull(file.getNumbers())) {
        resultList.append(i + 2);
      }
      return resultList;
    }
logn··on Atlassian acquires Trello for $425M
The new sprint-related features in Jira are pretty good and actually remind me of Trello.
logn··on Ask HN: What is the best resource to learn about modelling NoSQL data?
I like this article, https://highlyscalable.wordpress.com/2012/03/01/nosql-data-m...
logn··on So you want to expose Go on the Internet
Not OP but if you want an app in production then you want to be able to configure the http parts and script with command line tools. And if you start doing all that then you're basically reinventing nginx. Even comparing Java, nginx still has nicer http features, such as reloading ssl certs and config without dropping connections.
logn··on I am an investor in The Style Club. Or, at least, I thought I was
They own a small percent of every company that appears on the show whether they make a deal or not. After agreeing to a deal, it is subject to due diligence afterward.
logn··on Freelance Isn't Free Act Passes in NYC
Maybe you could just add a clause to the contract stating that late payment may result in the software being remotely deactivated.
logn··on Theranos Whistleblower Shook the Company and His Family
It seems to me his family was ultimately incredibly supportive (granted, they were initially skeptical) and are doing their best to balance their interests. His parents were willing to sell their house to cover legal fees. His grandfather referred him to a lawyer and supported his grandson in the meeting with company lawyers. Also their statements regarding him were very heart felt and positive. They mention the relationship with the grandfather being strained but that could very well be a result of PI surveillance and impending litigation making discussions risky, so it's not necessarily anything personal.
logn··on How to contribute to an open source project on GitHub
> Step 4: In frustration...

Step 4 requires no frustration. It should be a relief you can fix it yourself rather than hope for some opaque engineering team to maybe fix it at some future date since your company doesn't have the Platinum Support package.

> Steps 5..41: ...

I think maintainers of small projects should do their best to merge whatever is given to them without back and forth or delay--just a prompt and sincere thanks. There's no reason to treat contributors like junior devs you're trying to teach and guide. Sometimes that requires swallowing some pride in having the code be just right or means you may want to fix up a few things after the merge.

logn··on JEP 295: Ahead-of-Time Compilation
Green threads and system threads are the same illusion to programmers (or, at least, they can be). The only caveat is that dependencies using system threads won't play nicely with green threaded code. Quasar, which does green threads for Java, schedules and distributes your green threads to system threads, one for each cpu. The Quasar API for green threads is basically identical to built in Java APIs.
logn··on JEP 295: Ahead-of-Time Compilation
Quasar might be the closest in the meantime. One problem is that blocking IO blocks all the green threads (fibers). It might be possible for Oracle or someone to fix that by wrapping NIO with green threads to implement the IO APIs. Most people will just use async NIO wrapped in fibers so it appears synchronous. Also with Quasar any calls to Thread sleep, wait, or synchronization block all the threads. It would not be an easy feature for Oracle to add but Quasar has been attempting to get merged into the JRE. For Java 9 they said they got some features added that improves the situation but Quasar instrumentation will still be required.

The Quasar instrumentation in my opinion is a pain. Out of the box you either get AoT instrumentation or you use Java agent command line option. Both were problematic for me in context of build processes, IDE support, etc. It's possible to do runtime instrumentation with no special command line option using the Quasar URL classloader and Ant task which scans classes to instrument.
