loganwedwards··on Apple highlights Brazilian study on domestic App Store performance
True story. I sub contracted with another agency for a new startup and we wanted to have a pre-release for a small audience and the app was outright rejected by Apple for this same reason. My final milestone for said agency was tied to releasing the app to the store… still salty (and wiser) about that.
loganwedwards··on Immunotherapy drug clinical trial results: half of tumors shrink or disappear
My sister was part of an immunotherapy trial years back. She was given weeks to live; the trial gave us years. Tailored medicine is truly a marvel.
loganwedwards··on Ask HN: What have you built with ESPHome, ESP8266 or similar hardware
I have not built anything novel — just utilizing community projects have been a wonderful improvement at home: 1. Ratgdo for the garage door 2. Esphome EcoNet for my water heater 3. Off the shelf Sonoff switches for some holiday lighting.

All of this is tied with a bow via Home Assistant.

loganwedwards··on Bicyclists Deserve the Right to Free Movement
I live in South Carolina and was nodding in agreement reading your reply.
loganwedwards··on Just normal web things
Good for you. Abusing anchor (or navigation) is also a flagrant disregard for impaired users (those that need accessibility tooling).
loganwedwards··on Ask HN: My child was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. What to do?
Same boat here. When my 2nd child was around 5 was diagnosed with SPD (desires heavy input, sometimes auditory stimming) and autism. This is a journey and would recommend doing some reading. I can't recommend "The Power of Neurodiversity" by Armstrong enough to understand how every individual's mind works.

Each area (picky eating, social transitions) requires patience for incremental improvements. Also note that many of our social norms (at least in the USA) are not exactly fair to those neurodiverse individuals. Sometimes, self-awareness (when the child is older) will help as well.

Good luck and don't forget to love your child for who they are.

loganwedwards··on National Geographic lays off its last remaining staff writers
Have you tried Blendle? It semi solves this problem with a “pay per article” model, usually around $.50 each.
loganwedwards··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
I “installed” drop.com as a PWA on my iPhone. It gets full screen real estate and a launcher icon.
loganwedwards··on O Holy Crap
I have the exact same sentiment when it comes to the Baratza line of products. I have the Preciso, which is similar to the Encore. I have rebuilt parts of it twice and you could build a unit from parts if so desired. In fact, they should consider offering DIY editions ala Frame.work for enthusiasts.
loganwedwards··on Apparent size of Andromeda galaxy compared to the Moon
Ahh, great quote from Battlestar Galactica.
loganwedwards··on The Disappearing Art of Maintenance
I am on your same wavelength. Props to you for pursuing this mentality. I believe you would enjoy the book “The Innovation Delusion” by Vinsel and Russell
loganwedwards··on Christopher Alexander has died
Notes on the Synthesis of Form provided intriguing insight into the theory and cultural impacts of design. As others have mentioned, he provided examples using architecture and biology. Quite fascinating albeit dry at times. Highly recommended. Thanks to the others for other reading suggestions.
loganwedwards··on Framework Laptop with Ubuntu Review
I use Pop_OS on my Framework and loved 1.5x scaling except for screen tearing I get (YouTube for example). I reverted to 1x and increased icon and font sizes to semi compensate.
loganwedwards··on My Homelab Build
Entertaining read. I enjoyed the dialogue-like banter. Nice write up!

loganwedwards··on Live feed of Starship SN15 flight test [video]
This comment made my day. Looking forward to Starship flights to be as routine as the Falcons.
loganwedwards··on Things I Didn't Learn in 2020
This has been my experience to the T. Hindsight may provide some reinforcement one way or another, but if we had to do this all over again, I likely would not change much about our quarantine behavior patterns. Our crew just does not want to be a statistic (even if our demographic is of lower risk). Hang in there!
loganwedwards··on Ask HN: Which books have you read more than once?
I read East of Eden by Steinbeck twice. It's a long read, but a great story. In fact, I don't really remember any of the story, so perhaps a third read is in my future.
loganwedwards··on IoT Dashboard – A live dashboard companion for AWS IoT
+1 on the "Typical AWS issues" regarding policies. Even Amazon's own examples tend to confuse the issue more and it is typically after much trial and error do you attain the sweet spot for sensible policies that prioritize security. My only other gripe is MQTT retain is not supported, although as mentioned Device Shadows do provide this type of feature.
loganwedwards··on Perch: a really little CMS
Stackbit really is a great product! I was able to throw up a marketing site for my family's rental property in a few hours for some non-technical people to manage.
loganwedwards··on An Economist’s Guide to Potty Training
+1. For our family, it is not worth the stress of enforcing this new behavior until our child actively exhibit signs that they are ready for this endeavor. Maybe we have late bloomers, but it’s on average around 2 or 3 years old before they become potty trained. Yes, it is expensive and not great for the environment with the mountains of diapers we consume, but this method is still worth my sanity.
loganwedwards··on Ask HN: Are you contracting on the side (while working full time)?
I went down this route before going in full time with contracting. With a full time job, I was capable of billing between 10-15 hours a week and it was only sustainable for a few months for me due to the balance of downtime and family time. Besides the extra cash, the economic diversification and the new skills acquired during this time made the venture worth it, but YMMV. Good luck!
loganwedwards··on Rising health insurance deductibles fuel middle-class anger and resentment
I can't agree more. I also went the self employed route just after ACA went into effect and the level of stress this entire process causes every year is mind boggling. To add insult to injury, my premiums are increasing at astonishing rates - orders of magnitude more than a typical standard of living salary increase.
loganwedwards··on Making Nuclear Energy Smaller, Cheaper And Safer
Although NuScale is not the first to focus on this type of implementation (Westinghouse, Areva, B&W, etc..), namely small modular reactors (SMR), I am glad to see more hands in the mix. As a South Carolina resident (and supporter of nuclear power) and witnessing the shit-show with SCANA and the cancelled VC Summer plants, I am hopeful that economies of scale can take effect in the SMR-based designs.
loganwedwards··on 3D Modelling in a Browser
From a hobbyist perspective, I gladly welcome the onset of cloud-based tooling. Most of these options (OnShape, in particular) have generous free tiers. I used SolidWorks in a previous profession and generally was very happy with it, but in no way could I afford a single seat license for "play."
loganwedwards··on Building an Android App with AWS Amplify
I started using it around v0.3 and quite a bit has happened with aws-amplify since then. After migrating an IoT cloud from a competitor to AWS IoT, our team decided to leverage AWS Cognito (user identities) and Amplify really saved some time for us in this regard. User identities, JWTs and signing requests to lambda endpoint worked, for the most part. There are some struggles with ill-documented issues or just flat-out wrong Typescript definitions, but for the most part, I probably would have made the same decision again being that our platform is "all in" on AWS. I doubt I would use it if AWS Cognito was not in the mix.
loganwedwards··on Some people will pay for a subscription to a news site. How about two? Three?
I will second Blendle. I found it via HN recently and signed up. Being USA-based, I found that NYT and Economist are both available, which are value-adds for me. For example, I paid $0.19 to read a short NYT article, which seemed fair to me.
loganwedwards··on Poor Man’s Bose – Open Office and on the Go Noise Control
From my experience, it is not so much the noise level, but the distractions that they create. A nice set of noise-cancelling headphones allow me to focus in on my tasks.
loganwedwards··on No, Teachers Are Not Underpaid
While I am not in education, a large portion of my family is. My outside looking in perspective would tend to agree with all of your arguments, but a few counterpoints, I'd like to raise (based on my anecdotal evidence): 1. Teachers do not work 8 hour days. 10-12 hour days can be the norm, especially if extra hours outside of school are needed for student aid or mandatory administrative needs. 2. Teachers do have some administrative burden during the summer months, so technically, some work is done.

I live in South Carolina where many public education teachers make sub $50k.
