> a study highlighted by Apple today shows that iOS apps generated R$63.8 million ($11.7 million) in the country last year

> The study concluded that the App Store generated R$63.8 billion ($11.7 billion) for Brazilian developers last year

It seems the correct (from the original source) is billions.

And the original report says that, for 90% of this value, no commission was paid to Apple (perhaps for the low-value obtained by the developer)

It's horrible how much Apple controls the market. I know of one startup who got shut out of the market because Apple considered there were already enough apps of that kind on their App Store. In many instances if you can't have a mobile app your startup is dead before it started.

> there were already enough apps of that kind on their App Store

I’d love to see that. I’ve never heard of denial for that reason, and the App Store is certainly crowded in every category.

Apple reserves the right to evaporate your startup if your app is deemed to be in a "category that is already saturated".

> (b) Also avoid piling on to a category that is already saturated; the App Store has enough fart, burp, flashlight, fortune telling, dating, drinking games, and Kama Sutra apps, etc. already. We will reject these apps unless they provide a unique, high-quality experience. Spamming the store may lead to your removal from the Apple Developer Program.

>dating

OMFG dating is "saturated"? The entire dating app market is one company with bumble picking up scraps!

True story. I sub contracted with another agency for a new startup and we wanted to have a pre-release for a small audience and the app was outright rejected by Apple for this same reason. My final milestone for said agency was tied to releasing the app to the store… still salty (and wiser) about that.

Article fails to mention that the study was sponsored by Apple, not just "highlighted".

Can't read Portuguese, so can you provide the citation for this?
