lo_fye··on A short history of Bigfoot sightings and lore
Maybe you should do some research before calling bullsh*t. Here’s part 1 of 6 of a 12 hour analysis of that film - https://overcast.fm/+DkjFY8nxA

The hosts go into it open minded, and come out believing it is real.

Along the way they speak to the surviving people who were actually there and involved, AND to a Hollywood film maker and creature FX person who was making high-end costumes in the 60s. He says the technology to make a costume that good at that time was not in existence. Furthermore, he says nobody has yet been able to produce a costume of similar quality.

Also, when you look into the proportions the human body, they don’t match those of the being in the film.

Also, there are many indications in the film itself that it was an impromptu shoot.

AND the guy who claimed to have been the man in the monkey suit had a beef (motive) with the man who shot the film, AND the costume he described wearing doesn’t match what appears on the film, AND the lengths of his limbs don’t match those of the creature in the film.

And the other guy who was present when the film was shot is known to be highly respected and full of integrity. A real straight shooter.

Lastly, check out BFRO.org to see the thousands of sightings that continue to occur every year across the USA. Sure, some are probably bears... but some are up close and personal, and involve police, forest rangers, military, etc.

lo_fye··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job?
If you have enough money to last 5 years, and nothing really tying you down, absolutely quit and follow your passion!

lo_fye··on Memorandum on Microsoft’s strategy against Linux and Open Source software (1998)
That memo was by Gates/Ballmer. Satya Nadella has a completely different strategy. 2018 is a very different time, strategy-wise. Microsoft is transitioning from platforms to platform less supporting technologies (.Net core, Azure, OneDrive, etc), and Github is a major one.
lo_fye··on Ask HN: Developers who became engineering managers, how was the experience?
I found the daily interactions and increased participation in strategy to be great... BUT I never felt productive. As a dev, it was easy to know when I was productive. I could FEEL productive. As a manager? Not so much. There was nothing tangible. Just meetings and documents, and comments from direct reports. After 2.5 years, I just went back to development.
lo_fye··on How I Reduced My DB Server Load by 80%
TL;DR - spend time configuring it, write efficient code, and understand what your 3rd party code is actually doing.

PHP is the day before yesterday's software, but it still gets a shitload of profitable work done.

They didn't setup an admin account and disable ex-employees' access. How is this Mucrosoft's fault?
lo_fye··on CSS Modules
Oh, yes, I like that much more :) I've created this as an issue on their github repo, at https://github.com/css-modules/css-modules/issues/24

"The composes keyword says that .normal includes all the styles from .common" -- great, except you have the meaning of the word reversed. In the context above it actually means ".normal is part of .common", which is clearly not the intent. If you wanted it to mean that ".normal includes all the styles from .common" then .normal should be "composedOf: common"

Be careful of what you say here... it could get you put on a no fly list, or result in your website evapourating.
lo_fye··on Some American Airlines planes are grounded because the pilots’ iPads crashed
"The issue was centered around an update that was pushed 4 days ago" - that's an app bug, not an iPad bug.
lo_fye··on A standard for building APIs in JSON
Looks like XML implemented as JSON. If you want that much structure, use XML.
lo_fye··on What's the cheapest living situation possible that still has basic utilities?
the generic term for "tumbleweed houses" is "tiny homes" or "tiny houses". there's also a couple in New York? who built a great house out of a shipping container.

lo_fye··on Tracking devices hidden in London's recycling bins are stalking your smartphone
Hilariously, all 3 "unique" MAC addresses in that marketing image are identical: 00-14-22-01-23-45

They changed the font colour of the word "Mac", but not the actual address. Plus, Mac should be MAC.

McFail.

lo_fye··on Mystery Malady Kills More Bees, Heightening Worry on Farms
The film "resonance: beings of frequency" says it is from RF noise like cellular & wi-fi. We can't hear it, but it is there, and if you put a 2.4Ghz phone beside a hive, the bees vacate. Perhaps higher intensities kill them?
lo_fye··on Working alone sucks
I had this same problem recently. I thought co-working would fix it, but it didn't. Like you, the problem was deeper; I missed shared goals, successes, and even failures.

How did I fix it? I quit. I loved my job and my boss and my work hours, compensation, benefits & vacation... but I quit anyway. In January I start work at a small highly collaborative company, and I feel SO good about it :)

lo_fye··on Gimme Bar: Don't bookmark the web. Save it. Forever.
I guess it's the difference between: a) blogging your thoughts about an article and linking back to it, which encourages people to read the original so they know the context for what you've written.

VERSUS

b) quoting all or almost all of the interesting bits from the article, and providing a link to the original.

In the latter case, there is no reason or incentive for the user to visit the source. In the past couple of years I've begun to think this is the wrong way to go about things.

lo_fye··on Gimme Bar: Don't bookmark the web. Save it. Forever.
i guess they could put a hoverbar at the top of the page when they link to the original content. if there's a 404 or redirect, the user can click the hoverbar to see gimmebar's copy.

i'm not sure how to do it, exactly, but i know it's possible to do this in a way that isn't so... swipey.

lo_fye··on Gimme Bar: Don't bookmark the web. Save it. Forever.
Gimmebar pulls a Readability. When you share content from Gimmebar, it shares a shortlink to the content on Gimmebar, not the source URL. Sure seems like content/value/traffic theft to me.
lo_fye··on Show HN: Recruit web developers by having them build a web app
it better be a very simple web app. otherwise the applicant can only apply to a couple jobs a week/month.

makes me think: ask a car manufacturer to design & build a new car before you choose them to design & build your company's custom car.

lo_fye··on Mark Zuckerberg sells 30.2 million shares of $FB common stock at $37.58
Is he still the majority shareholder? Does this make him accountable to the board, now? Maybe he did it both for the $, and as a show of goodwill toward the board, after that whole "Kiss my butt, we're buying Instagram" thing.
