lo_fye··on Devastated father says his 9-year-old son spent $118,000 on YouTube ads
Because it’s theft even if you don’t get caught.

Do not let that kid (or his dad) anywhere near an OpenClaw instance.
lo_fye··on iPhone Duo
Competitors may have copied most of the form factor, but as usual, it’s Apple’s Special sauce that makes this thing amazing. In this case it’s how well integrated all of the screens are into the OS and its default apps and actions. SO slick and smooth. Great camera tricks, and the Pencil is a welcome addition, too.
lo_fye··on Serve Markdown to AI Agents with Accept Headers
Please don’t tell me we are willing to make it easier for AI to read our content than we are to make it easier for humans to read our content.

Better idea: make your UI always prioritize the content.

lo_fye··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
I've been using the free version of TailScale to use macOS's built-in screen sharing app to use my home Mac mini from my work MacBook Pro. Works great! That combined with ChatGPT/Codex's "remote" feature is an amazing combination. I think you'd be totally fine with a Mac Studio + Neo.
lo_fye··on HTML Can Do That
I remember when it was considered ridiculous to have a page take more than 250ms to complete its loading. Now nobody bats an eye at a 25MB page that takes over 30 seconds to load. I'm sticking with the old ways, thank you very much.
lo_fye··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
The price they should have to pay for destroying a rare book (just to scan it) is making a pristine high resolution digital copy of it available to the public at no cost whatsoever.

$20 of tools, and a lifetime of skills. In this case, cheap has quite a few prerequisites.
lo_fye··on Canada plans 'nuclear renaissance' with up to 10 reactors built by 2040
So we're willing to put our greatest national asset (the environment) at risk in the name of "moar power". Well that's just great.

I hope Jimmy Carter's ghost will be just as willing to help us out the next time a reactor goes into meltdown as his physical self was the first time that happened. RIP Jimmy Carter.

lo_fye··on Building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight
Great work. I love it. We need more developers like you.
lo_fye··on LLMs are eroding my software engineering career and I don't know what to do
I have 25 years of experience with a single programming language that’s still in broad modern use. My employer recently moved me to a project that doesn’t use that language. The new language is completely foreign and hard for me to read. BUT we are supposed to maximize our AI usage. I made a few agents and skills to automate workflows, and now I can just say “$do-ticket ABC-1234”, and it gets done using TDD and hands me a report on what changes it made and why, along with an open Pull Request that automatically gets reviewed (again) by Codex. And the code works the first time 98% of the time. I don’t know the language, and it seems like people would prefer that I not know it, because then my AI use is necessarily maximal, but what am I even doing? Just telling AI to do a ticket? I see developer salaries trending toward minimum wage in the near future, and it’s scary, so I’m learning and leveraging LLM stuff, but even that will only help for so long. It’s a crazy time in our industry.

lo_fye··on The newest Instagram “exploit” is the goofiest I've seen
UPDATE!

At around 12:20pm, after hours of trying anything I could, the Desktop version of Facebook Web's Meta AI Support asked me to upload a video selfie. Then it asked me when the issue began, and as soon as I said around 7am this morning, their AI was like "Ah ha!" -- It asked me for my alternate email address, which I provided, and as soon as I clicked a link in that email, I started getting email about Pages being republished, access to Marketplace being restored, etc.

Now: Can I even prevent this from happening in future? How can I make sure everyone has my blog url (or phone number) so they can contact me even if I lose contact with them?

Thank you for your support and concern, despite however dumb my comments in 2009 were. LOL.

HELP?

I woke up to a bunch of notifications on my phone from the past 30-60 mins, indicating that people in in Montreal, Argentina, and Kathmandu had attempted to login to my account, and at least one had succeeded. I'm nowhere near any of those locations, and I didn't get any 2FA messages.

I tapped Instagram, and it asked me for a new password, so I set one, and it just hung and did nothing.

My Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Threads, and Quest accounts were all permanently disabled. My Quest headset is a brick, too. It said I had violated their terms of service, and there would be no appeals process. No recourse as far as I can tell. I was a member of all of them from year 1 if not day 1.

I use 1Password and complex unique passwords and 2FA religiously. I even had Advanced Account Protection turned on in Facebook. Now it says that my phone number and email are not attached to any known Facebook accounts. I have no idea how this could have happened.

I couldn't care less about using social networks as social networks, but I have hundreds of people on there that I have no other contact info for, and I'm a member of many groups that don't exist anywhere else.

Moments ago, I was able to login to Instagram, presumably because that password change did actually work, eventually, so I'm trying to make some headway there, but trying to find & access Meta Customer Support is impossible, especially when I can't get into the main Meta Account that everything is tied to.

If you or anyone you know have any clue what to do about this, please let me know.

lo_fye··on I manage teams without a single call
- Some people cannot communicate via written text. At all. - Other people always prefer voice over text. Why should our preferences trump theirs? - Text is low bandwidth, audio/video is high bandwidth (in that it can convey emotions & tonality much more easily) - People are much more open with issues they're encountering when face-to-face. Text is too impersonal for that.
lo_fye··on Leave Me Behind
I am a senior php dev, and I was recently transferred to a Ruby on Rails project. It's completely foreign to me. Our client has advised us to use LLMs as much as possible. The problem is that it's virtually impossible to learn a codebase when you're using AI to do the coding. You never see more than a few lines of code at a time unless you purposefully dig in, but you might not have the time given velocity demands. And yes, it also results in nobody on the team really knowing any area of the code inside-out. It's very very different from my previous 25 years of coding, and I do enjoy it less, but...

>>It (software development) is sincerely an art form; A craft that takes >>dedication, perseverance and especially, a strong community to endure. >>Software was built by humans, for humans.

100 years ago, you could only buy furniture made by crafts people. Real artisans. Now you have a choice: IKEA or hand made Most people choose IKEA because they don't care how it was made, as long as it does the job There are still those who prefer hand made furniture, and they pay a pretty penny for it. I think that's where this is heading, and I agree it's unfortunate. Software development will become a hobby (many people do wood working in their spare time). There will be a few real experts left, who largely do consulting. Maybe they create training data? Maybe they design frameworks for the AI to master. I don't know. But things sure are going to be different from here on out, and not entirely for the better.

>>If it’s not built by humans, then who is it being built for?

Right now it's built by AI for humans (and sometimes other AI). Very soon it'll be built by AI for other AI (and sometimes humans). Later it'll be built by AI primarily for AI (rarely humans).

I didn’t even know it was available to opt-in to! Probably why adoption wasn’t great.
lo_fye··on PM Carney declares U.S. ties now a 'weakness' in address to Canadians
It wasn’t a surprise to us. It’s how Canadians already feel. Threaten our sovereignty and that’s what happens.

Betteridge's Law of Headlines states that any headline ending in a question mark can be answered with "no".
lo_fye··on No-build, no-NPM, SSR-first JavaScript framework if you hate React, love HTML
I wonder how many users would prefer to have full page reloads (aka traditional server-side rendering) when navigating instead of all the insane http requests and ads we have today?

lo_fye··on OpenClaw is what Apple intelligence should have been
Given that OpenClaw isn’t a lot of code, Apple could still build their own. After all, a hyper-personal AI Assistant is what they announced as “Apple Intelligence” two WWDCs ago. Or the could buy OpenClaw, hand it to the Shortcuts team, throw in their remaining AI devs, and Bob’s your uncle. They aren’t first to OpenClaw, but maybe they can still be the best. I know I’d like to be sure it can’t erase my entire disk just because i sneeze when I’m telling it what to do.
lo_fye··on The unbearable joy of sitting alone in a café
I don't think about anyone at the cafe, unless I start chatting with someone. I just take a physical book with me, crack it open, and read as I sip my coffee. I keep a notepad nearby in case I have good ideas while reading. I may get a refill. When I've read enough, I leave. It's 100% relaxing for me.

Fantastic job!
lo_fye··on I’ve removed Disqus. It was making my blog worse
I don't think anyone is surprised by this.
lo_fye··on Users only care about 20% of your application
Yes, but many of them care about different twenty-percentses, so you probably still need the whole thing to keep the number of users you currently have.

BUT if you can find a feature that few people use, but which requires a lot of maintenance and/or ongoing development time, get rid of that bit and enjoy a higher ROI.
