lo_fye··on Swift sucks at web serving or does it?
Swift was first released in June 2014, which is 1 month away from being exactly 10 years ago. So you wanted them to optimize it for web development as it was being birthed as a language?
lo_fye··on Swift sucks at web serving or does it?
Makes me wonder how the other languages/frameworks would perform if experts were also looking into them and why they were so slow. Recent versions of pure native PHP, in particular, are incredibly fast and lightweight, and I'm quite surprised by its pokey showing here.
lo_fye··on The iPad Pro Manifesto (2024 Edition)
Have you seen the MacPad by Federico Viticci of MacStories.net? He achieves it with zero actual hacks, and only 1 custom Shortcut. It lets the iPad be an iPad by default, but also act as a Mac display at the press of a shortcut. As long as your files are in iCloud, it appears to furnishes forth a seamless experience. https://www.macstories.net/stories/macpad-how-i-created-the-...
lo_fye··on Cats suffer H5N1 brain infections, blindness, death after drinking raw milk
Were these cows pasture fed, or kept in a densely-packed barn and pumped full of drugs and antibiotics? I bet that'd make a difference in their milk.
lo_fye··on The man who killed Google Search?
I recently tried Kagi search (kagi.com) just to see what it was all about, and was instantly shocked at how different it felt, and that difference was mostly due to the complete absence of ads. It made me want to subscribe immediately.
lo_fye··on The man who killed Google Search?
The thing I love about this story is that it demonstrates that even in a global mega-organization, a single person can make a huge difference, for better (Gomes) or for worse (Raghavan).
lo_fye··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
Earthlings was the only movie I’ve ever had to pause and watch in 2 sessions in order to get through it. I found it utterly devastating. Evocation of emotion is what I look for in a movie (or any art, really), and Earthlings maxxed me out.
lo_fye··on Nearly 40% of U.S. homes are mortgage-free, census shows
Translation: Nearly 40% of US homes are mortgage-free (and owned by Boomers)
lo_fye··on Why agencies get stuck at $50k MRR
You can’t scale when you’re working in your business instead of on your business.
lo_fye··on JP Morgan fined by SEC for deleting email records
LOL @ “accidentally”.
lo_fye··on How much does fast thinking matter in Lichess games?
I couldn’t agree more. Chess is chess, and Bullet Chess is Bullet Chess. The amount of time available makes them different games.

I’d argue that faster speed relies more on pattern recognition and intuition, versus strategy.

lo_fye··on How much does fast thinking matter in Lichess games?
This is cool, but I’d love to see a comparison between 180-second games and 3-days per move games.
lo_fye··on Have we already been visited by aliens?
Many people have seen them so near that there's no possible way it's a misidentification. For example, standing in the same room, indoors, in their homes... or outside in groups with many other corroborating witnesses (Google "Ariel School Zimbabwe mass sighting"). They're not all lying. In fact, if even just 1 is true, then yes we are being visited by aliens.

Buddy - instead of having to update your email from @gmail to @fastmap or @hey everywhere, get your own custom domain name! You keep the domain forever, and get gmail or fast mail or hey (feature coming soon to hey) to send and receive messages on behalf of your domain. Never update all those websites & friends again. Keep your same email address forever.
lo_fye··on When will virtual reality take off? The $100 bet
It started to take off in October, with the release of the Oculus Quest 2, which is out of stock all over the place. It has nearly doubled Oculus' userbase on Steam in just 2.5 months despite their various other headsets having been out for years.
lo_fye··on Due to a problem with AWS, many "smart" vacuums or doorbells will stop working
I bought a large dumb 4K TV (hard to find!) from Haier for cheap at Costco. Love it.

It’s connected via Apple TV 4K, which I can easily upgrade whenever I want.

I have Lutron Caséta in-wall smart switches which communicate with their hub. Not a single delay or bug in 8 years. And they are intuitive for non-techies to use. It’s just a light switch.

I also have some Philips Hue for accent lighting. It frequently fails to respond.

I think HomeKit is better because it at least has to pass Apple’s certification process for some minimum bar of quality.

It’s also nice that all HomeKit stuff works through the ControlCentre app. You can 100% avoid ALL manufacturer-specific apps for daily use.

lo_fye··on Apache OpenMeetings – Video chat, messaging, white board, doc editing and more
They need a UX/UI person, badly. They should also just call it "OpenMeetings", and ditch the Apache moniker on their products. Normal people don't know who or what Apache is. They don't care. At best, it'll confuse them. At worst it'll make them afraid to install it. Just market "OpenMeetings", but for goodness sake, pretty it up first.
lo_fye··on macOS has checked app signatures online for over 2 years
yes. with no personally identifying details included. and it was publicly documented.
lo_fye··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
The (smart)lights in my office turn on at 9am. At 4:30 they turn red. At 5:00pm they turn off. I never stay in my office past when the lights turn off.
lo_fye··on Do Human crowds during protests resemble animal swarming behavior?
We are animals, so I’d guess yes.
lo_fye··on Ask HN: How do you organise your files and folders?
Try using Hazel (macOS-only) to auto-file stuff for you based on whatever naming conventions or file extensions you want. It’s amazing.

lo_fye··on A short history of Bigfoot sightings and lore
Or listen to 1 of the over 450 episodes of the podcast “Sasquatch Chronicles”, each of which contains 1 or more eye witness reports.

lo_fye··on A short history of Bigfoot sightings and lore
It’s broken up into 6 parts because they dive so deep into every aspect of the film. The guys history. Feasibility of hoaxing. Etc. I’m not trying to convince you. I’m saying give it a listen and see what you think.
lo_fye··on A short history of Bigfoot sightings and lore
Plenty of people have cell phones with them. They are either too shocked to take a picture, or they use their digital zoom and the pic comes out fuzzy and people call it a hoax. Or they get a decent pic and people call it a hoax anyway.
lo_fye··on A short history of Bigfoot sightings and lore
Bob Gimlin.

Yes, really. They can do it with computer graphics, but not costumes. Computer graphics didn’t exist when the film was made. Spandex didn’t even exist yet.

lo_fye··on A short history of Bigfoot sightings and lore
One theory is that sasquatch live in family units, and they bury their dead. They’re much smarter than bears.

Check out “Discovering Bigfoot” On Netflix. It’s actually worth a watch.
