lkxijlewlf··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
I would be having some fun.

Friend: Have you any success bringing your neighbors on board.

Me: There's been a setback. They're currently not speaking with me.

Friend: That is unfortunate. We're talking a lot of money.

Me: I know. I'll fix it.

Friend: You better.

lkxijlewlf··on CP/M is really open-source now
Slightly off topic:

I recall as a youngin watching Gary Kildall on the Computer Chronicles. I was always fascinated by what people were doing with computers. I know it is nostalgia and there's infinitely more to learn about today than there was then, but I do miss that era of computing.

lkxijlewlf··on Admit It, Squirrels Are Just Tree Rats
Squirrels around here are super annoying. They love to play dodge wheel. I hate it because I don't want puncture a tire because of one of those little shits.

Edit: Relevant - http://toddmitchellbooks.com/twelve-things-about-squirrels-t...

lkxijlewlf··on Implementing Microsoft REST API Filter
"Ugh... REST is too much work! We'll just change the meaning to suit us."
lkxijlewlf··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
How soon until your car tells BMW that it's cold outside and BMW turns on the heated seats and puts an ad on your display, "For just $18/Month, this feature could be yours!"
lkxijlewlf··on Why do so many brands change their logos and look like everyone else?
"New and Improved" is corporate speak for we spreadsheeted the flavor out of it.
lkxijlewlf··on Elon’s Out
Maybe this is a good reason a single human being shouldn't be so fucking rich.

If enough money makes you untouchable by the law, then our system is simply broken.

lkxijlewlf··on HN is up again
Feels snappier. :)
lkxijlewlf··on Music for Programming
> Every time I cook, my wife about has a panic attack watching me fumble around, forgetting things, looking for things, oh god that's burning, etc.

I do all the cooking for our family because I'm pretty good at it. A few things that help me. First is mise en place. I read through the recipe and lay out all the ingredients and prep them (dice, chop, measure, etc). The next thing is I read through the recipe several times and picture myself following the directions. This greatly helps me determine my timing for everything.

Not trying to fix you. Just thought I'd throw out some ideas in case you wanna try.

EDIT: Forgot to mention music. I can't code to music with lyrics. Nor can I code to music that has too many sharp edges. If it has a nice, smooth, consistent beat, I can really get some stuff done, though.

lkxijlewlf··on Mitch McConnell says labor shortage will end when people run out stimulus money
> That would imply that they currently do so, or used to in the past. I won't say that Republicans want me dead because I'm a working-class, autistic, openly bisexual atheist and the child of an interracial marriage, but I think it's fair to say that the vast majority of them wouldn't so much as piss on me if I was on fire.

Good grief, you get hit by nearly all the Fucker Carlson hate spew.

Keep your head low... and stay safe.

lkxijlewlf··on Mitch McConnell says labor shortage will end when people run out stimulus money
> What will happen when those Republicans - the same people who you are calling "hateful and paranoid" - win the next two election rounds which they seem to be poised to do?

Welcome to the Authoritarian States of America.

That's not hyperbole. It's coming. When SCOTUS rules on "independent legislature" the way everyone expects them to, it's all over.

Hope you enjoyed it while it lasted.

lkxijlewlf··on Mitch McConnell says labor shortage will end when people run out stimulus money
He's not stupid. That man is very shrewd. He's playing to his base's paranoid, hateful beliefs.
lkxijlewlf··on WeatherKit
I believe it was Accuweather (sic) and Rick Santorum.
lkxijlewlf··on Police Can Trace Cameras Thanks to Sensor Imperfection ‘Fingerprints’
Laser printers (color ones) are (were?) required to have some sort of built in imperfection because they were too good and could be used for counterfeiting.

I wouldn't be surprised if this eventually is a requirement for cameras, you know, just because law enforcement wants it.

lkxijlewlf··on US hypersonic missile fails in test- 2nd consecutive failed attempt
I think that is the point. The problem is, they're blowing up non deterministically.
lkxijlewlf··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
Trump is a tool. He didn't do this. He doesn't have the brain power to do this. This was the CNP, the Federalist Society, the Koch bruhs, etc. They've worked on this for decades. DECADES.
lkxijlewlf··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
Cruelty is the point.
lkxijlewlf··on Ask HN: How to level up your technical writing?
I can only read his short fiction with few exceptions. He got to the point where he would take 50 pages (exaggeration, but still...) to describe, I dunno, a room. Okay, so the room is important, but is it that important?
lkxijlewlf··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Unless one is talking about CCW, then it's apparently a federal thing.
lkxijlewlf··on Start all of your commands with a comma (2009)
I put c:\tools in my path, then put shortcuts to all my tools in there (ie: shortcut to AgentRansack named ar). Now, I pull up the run command (WND+R) type ar and agent ransack opens.
lkxijlewlf··on “Google” programmers. How one idiot hired a couple more idiots
> I have a parallel term I use, jiggle programmers. They can jiggle code around until it works, often working off existing code.

We're all jiggle programmers then. Once the applications architecture is established, we hang new feature on it by following that architecture.

Very very few of us get to only write code from scratch every day. Most of the time, when I'm writing from 0, I'm working on a R&D PoC. If I'm not doing that, I'm jiggle programming a new feature into an existing architecture.

> With the rise of self-taught programmers, you will see more take this copying approach than the academic redistillation.

I was self-taught before university. I learned on a C=64 and then an early x86 back in the day. If you didn't figure it out on your own, you hoped you would see it in a magazine or book some place. I learned a lot about how computers worked at a fundamental level from the C=64. I don't think self-taught is the issue. I think it's how much the person really wants to know about computers and CS.

lkxijlewlf··on An experiment to test if Bionic Reading helps you read faster
I read once that when we read, our eyes bounce along the tops of the letters. A demonstration removed the lower parts of the letters, and interestingly, I was able to still read the words. I would like to see this same test but with a font that removed the lower half of the words in each sentence. Just for kicks and giggles...
lkxijlewlf··on An experiment to test if Bionic Reading helps you read faster
I was a mere 2% faster. 404 vs 396 WPM.

Edit: 2% faster with BR.

lkxijlewlf··on IKEA Instructions for Algorithms
Ahhh, okay. That went right over my head. Thanks.
lkxijlewlf··on IKEA Instructions for Algorithms
Why does the HN title say "IKEA"? How are these related?
lkxijlewlf··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
That's a little unfair. When you lose someone, a very many things have to happen almost immediately. It can be quite overwhelming. Especially given the stress and trauma of just losing a loved one. Having everything "you should already have" in one place makes a lot of sense. And there's nothing to say that this has to remain only in MD format. A printed copy in the safe would be helpful.

Of course, using your logic, getting is sorted "yesterday" could mean sitting down and having your loved one understand how to access all this data using MD. Even better would be to have them build the data up with you.

lkxijlewlf··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
I think you're making the case for Apple being too powerful.
lkxijlewlf··on Webcams aren't good enough
>There's enough gross margin to produce a $B company just by selling webcams [0], especially if you can actually get customers excited about the product.

Is this from HW only or some sort of MRR from SW lock-in?

lkxijlewlf··on Tesla sends untrained employees to work on cars as service becomes problematic
> Asshole for trying?

Trying what exactly? We're literally killing our planet and instead of doing what we should do to save it, we praise some rich asshole for building a rocket? Why?

lkxijlewlf··on Tesla sends untrained employees to work on cars as service becomes problematic
That's not what free speech means.

Multiplanetary? Really? We'll all be so far dead by then...
