littlecorner··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
He's not going to develop the skills if he doesn't face consequences for his actions
littlecorner··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
A deeper question: why can they even have these lawsuits? Why don't the judges or juries reject the lawsuit?
littlecorner··on Socrates vs. the Written Word (2011)
In theory, but in practice there are some kinds of knowledge that are hard to develop without a mentor. And there's lots of little things that are so obvious that its not worth writing down, but then years, decades, centuries later those things are no longer obvious.

All of that translating written material from one culture to your own and then implementing it is by no means a trivial task and shouldn't be taken for granted

littlecorner··on Socrates vs. the Written Word (2011)
Well, when the resources and infrastructure to support a technology collapse, then you have to rediscover how to do it the old ways.

And its worth remembering that technologies change us in unexpected ways. They can fix a problem while creating new ones

littlecorner··on Socrates vs. the Written Word (2011)
Socrates is a historical person and the mentor to Plato, but Plato uses him in his works to develop and deliver his arguments. Since we don't have much about Socrates outside of Plato its unclear how true Plato's rendition is true to what Socrates would've argued.

Also it should be noted that ancient writings did not include punctuation or whitespace, and presumably they were meant to be read aloud and listened to. Augustine (354 - 430 AD) mentions someone reading in his head as odd.

littlecorner··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
I'm thinking more from my context where it probably wouldn't make sense. Small city that's rather spread out and quickly transitions into farmland. And a big culture of driving to neighboring counties for vacations

Which is the difficulty in talking about "America needs to do such and such": we are much more diverse, and when we're talking about one context someone else hears their context or isn't able to imagine a different context. Perhaps these kind of conversations would be better had at local levels than national

littlecorner··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
This will work for a few cities like New York or San Francisco but not for rural communities and won't be efficient for smaller cities or towns that are spread out. At least not without sacrificing independency and speed, which we're constantly trying to escape from
littlecorner··on Copyright does more harm than good and should be abolished
The requirement is money and connections
littlecorner··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Thanks! There's definitely enough blame to share around
littlecorner··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Reading the article, I must clarify my question. You said that there was state level movements prior to the UK. Did you mean that prior to 2023 or 2017 there were US state level efforts? Where was that happening? Sorry for not being clear
littlecorner··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Ah. I can't currently view the article, and assumed you were making an offhand reference. My apologies; I'll have to save it to view later
littlecorner··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Which states? How much? Were these anomalous events that were overturned, or more systematic? These are honest questions I'm having, not trying to argue any narrative
littlecorner··on Ancient Library – 1,060 Greek/Latin texts, click any word to parse it
My understanding is that the lack of vowels, word spacing, and punctuation in texts suggests that all ancient texts were meant to be heard, not read. I think it was Augustine, or some other Church Father, was talking about seeing someone reading silently as something remarkable or that he hadn't seen before.
littlecorner··on Our position on open-weights models
Every time I read Hugging Face, my brain first jumps to facehugger from Alien. I really wish they chose a different name...
littlecorner··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
It's much easier to blame everyone else instead of trying to change myself
littlecorner··on Banned Book Library in a Wi-Fi Smart Light Bulb
The cynical side of me wonders if some books might be "banned" on purpose to have the distinction of being a banned book. Probably few books are actually that way, but these days it seems like a shortcut to notoriety
littlecorner··on Toy Story 5 shows 'terror' of children's screen addiction, says Tom Hanks
Kids like repetition in their media. They often ask to watch the same movie for days/weeks on end, or read the same story every night, or the same story. And if you don't tell it the same way they remind you...

Suffice it to say, repetition isn't the same frustration that it can be for adults

littlecorner··on The Melancholy of Slaying Monsters
> Perhaps true malice, then, resides not in the monsters themselves but in the systems that classify them as enemies No, malice does not come from the systems. It comes from us who make the systems
littlecorner··on You Should Not Update Your Dependencies
Perhaps upgrade to one a few versions out of date but confirmed to be good?
littlecorner··on College students drown out AI-praising commencement speeches with boos
"Wait, those are real people whose jobs I cut? I thought they were just numbers"
littlecorner··on Quirks of Human Anatomy
And, in weird circumstances, men can lactate. There's even a story about a viking whose name is escaping me who nursed his son after his wife died.
littlecorner··on Honda is killing its EVs
The world we live in is capitalistic. We can imagine another world that isn't, but when we're considering specific pieces of technology, it's worthwhile to judge it by how it will perform or be exploited in the world we live in.
littlecorner··on India's top court angry after junior judge cites fake AI-generated orders
>>Some human still has to be accountable. Someone has to get fired / go to jail when something screws up.

Now I'm trying to imagine a way they could apply a criminal charge against an AI in such a way that it would prevent the AI from being used in official capacity or something

littlecorner··on Tech companies shouldn't be bullied into doing surveillance
On the plus side, the current administration isn't obscuring the corruption like previous administrations, which is somewhat refreshing.
littlecorner··on Show HN: Jemini – Gemini for the Epstein Files
It's very disconcerting to think that this "innocent" toy or clothing I see my children playing with as "tainted" by this monster. Suddenly he's not just some nebulous monster out there, but in some way the idea of him is here with my children, arousing protective instincts without anything in particular to direct that energy towards.

It also shows him as a human like other humans, which then makes me ponder is that person walking down the street also a monster? Could I become a monster like Epstein?

Such thoughts are very disconcerting

littlecorner··on What your Bluetooth devices reveal
Did not realize I could do that! Thank you!
littlecorner··on Discord/Twitch/Snapchat age verification bypass
And have schools stop giving kids laptops or tablets. I wonder how much of the Chromebooks for school incitive was to develop a new market for Google
littlecorner··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Everyone thought that we were designing the system, but it's really been the system designing us.

(Only half joking; the medium is the message, and changes us as much as we change it)

littlecorner··on A case study in PDF forensics: The Epstein PDFs
I think some of the released documents included images of victims, which where redacted. So it's not necessarily malicious removals
littlecorner··on Sins of the Children
The Sun Eater series is an interesting one that kind of goes both ways. The big alien baddies are basically demons, and humanity gets a lot of love, but all the politicking and whatnot shows humanity to be both good and bad
