limaoscarjuliet··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
I got tickets for a concert in UK, which could only be bought if you had UK Ticketmaster app. No, the international version of Ticketmaster app did not have these. Had to get me a blank Android phone, had to initialize it pretending I'm in UK via VPN, so I can see the UK Android Playstore (got my phone number blocked by Google in the process - "too many verifications from this number"). Then, it finally let me get the tickets and actually see the dreadful barcode in the app.

This is horrible. Please stop.

limaoscarjuliet··on How to get the most out of Postgres memory settings
Do not forget huge pages configuration in kernel - Postgres will use them and it will save a lot of RAM for large databases, esp with many connections.

One of the ways to configure is to continue adding nr_hugepages to kernel, restarting PG and running your workload until you see HugePages_Free growing.

E.g.:

sysctl.d/10-hugepages.conf:vm.nr_hugepages=20000

See how these are used:

[root@potato ~]# cat /proc/meminfo | grep -i huge

AnonHugePages: 4411392 kB

ShmemHugePages: 0 kB

FileHugePages: 0 kB

HugePages_Total: 20000

HugePages_Free: 3103

HugePages_Rsvd: 143

HugePages_Surp: 0

Hugepagesize: 2048 kB Hugetlb: 40960000 kB

limaoscarjuliet··on Mysterious Moving Pointers
I started with Stroustrup's C++, it already had templates back then.
limaoscarjuliet··on Mysterious Moving Pointers
I remember the C++ ca. 1994 year when I started my career. It was C with Objects back then. And it was great! C++ was better C, it was easy for any C dev to convince him/her to jump to it.

I recently had to work with C++ code and... it is not a happy story anymore:

- Lots of magic like described here

- F**ing templates - for those who like them, did you ever see a C++ core file? Or tried to understand a single symbol?

- Standarization that feels like pulling more Boost into the language, which means more templates. Which makes core files incomprehensible.

It used the be that average dev who knew C could read and work with simple C++. This is no longer true. C++ is no longer a better C.

P.S. Example from recent core file, one line in the stack trace: boost::asio::asio_handler_invoke<boost::asio::detail::binder2<core::AsyncSignalCatcher<2, 15, 17>::waitForSignal<XServer::m_accept_loop(tsr::Data&)::<lambda(spawn::yield_context)>::<lambda(int)> >(XServer::m_accept_loop(tsr::Data&)::<lambda(spawn::yield_context)>::<lambda(int)>&&)::<lambda(const boost::system::error_code&, int)>, boost::system::error_code, int> > (function=...)

limaoscarjuliet··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
Missed the point on communicating with the Tax Govt people by snail mail - you want it that way. Working with them over phone or email will inevitably lead to you being hit with fines and other nasty scenarios.

Always get a lawyer to represent you when the Tax folks start an audit. Never tell them anything over the phone or email. Always ask for a letter and provide explanations via letter. Do record all communications with them. Never say anything they did not ask for.

limaoscarjuliet··on The Tale of Daniel
That Venn diagram showing a child coming out from center of two round overlapping circles might be not the best choice, especially when pink color circles are at play when looking for feminine names :-)

P.S. A bit of noise in the data too, some names in Polish/English pairs are not really good.

limaoscarjuliet··on Be more lucky
Successful people are keen on telling their success story while people who did not win are busy trying agian or have depression in quiet corner, hopefully short term. Any characteristics derived from self-reported or externally observed data that successful group shares is always askewed due to selection or surviorship bias because of this.

The only true thing here is: people who analyze the data more and reason based on this, can draw better outcome. It is not luck, but yes, might look like one.

Cheers!

limaoscarjuliet··on Winning a hackathon, losing my sanity
Turning 50 this year, writing code for living, and could not agree more. I used to think all must be re-written and refactored. "Old crap must go". "I can do it better". But then one realizes the rewritten system is "crap" to someone else soon.

Learning existing system is harder than to create something seemingly equivalent that author understands well. For some time at least.

limaoscarjuliet··on The Good Soldier Švejk (2018)
I was raised in Eastern Bloc in 70 and 80s. Svejk was the classic we all read as teenagers. We have seen that as parody of communism and always wondered how is that book not censored or forbidden?

Now I realize it describes any sufficient evolved (i.e. broken) system, which might have been good enough excuse for the soviets not to make it verbotten.

limaoscarjuliet··on The 'Atlanta Magnet Man' is saving our car tires, one bike ride at a time
He is saving our bike tires rather, as he seems to ride the shoulder more than the car lanes (and rightly so).

I live in Atlanta, ride both car and bicycle and do not have flat tire more often than average. Perhaps thanks to his help!

Most folks commenting seem to miss the fact this is for text messages only, and likely "emergency" ones, i.e. rate limited, at that. This would not result in power drain during normal LTE operation, but - my guess - would instead check with the satellite to send/recv txt messages every now and then AND only when not in LTE coverage.

Agreed 100% The last time C++ "made sense" to me was 1998 reading and practicing Bjarne Strostrup's C++ book. It was better C then and a lot of these improvements made sense.

This resonates with me so well. Every time I'm tired, hungry or horny, it very quickly changes how I perceive reality. Keep that state long enough and things change shape and meaning, as if I'm tuning my senses to new frequency.

I had many of these moments in my life and, after some hesitation, always picked the get up and fight mode. I hope you will too. It wil get us places for sure.
