I bet poor manufacturer, or poor quality, or poor batch. Also maybe NC (normally closed) vs NO (normally open) behave differently? In any case, the ones we use are solid, especially given they are installed on damp AC ice-water circuits.
limaoscarjuliet··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
I hated AI from the start, but then gradually warmed up to it. It does help me to write code. And it gets better every day, sometimes literally.

Today I think it is a tool. Like a framer's nail gun. It helps us to be faster and potentially better at what we do. Oh, and got to ride Waymo recently and it got me places, alive and well. So it does some things right.

But the true answer is not so simple. A friend of mine recently asked me a question: "My child wants to go into software dev, should I let him?" Well, crap, maybe consider something else?

limaoscarjuliet··on Wax motor
Me too, took me some time to figure out what this thing does :-)
limaoscarjuliet··on Wax motor
Wikipedia page has a small error. It shows an actuator (i.e. wax motor) described as thermostatic radiator valve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wax_motor#/media/File:Thermisc...

These are two separate things: thermostat will close and open based on surrounding temp., the actuator on the other hand opens and closes based on energizing a heating element that is driven by a separate thermostat.

Wax motors are pretty cool things. They rarely fail and do their job even in damp environments. I take care of my better half's hotel with approx 100 of these installed and we replace one of these once every couple of years.

Only cats can violate Pauli's principle. Anybody who had a cat can attest to the fact they can go through walls. Just close a room with a cat inside and - given enough time - the cat will escape.

Fonts are like cheesecakes. Everyone has their own favorite and there is always room for improvement.
limaoscarjuliet··on I showed an AI an image it couldn't see – then caught it lying about what it saw
It passes Turing test. However, it does NOT think. Let's stop pretending it does.

limaoscarjuliet··on Show HN: Beautiful Type Erasure with C++26 Reflection
I get a heart attack whenever I have to view core file from a decently complicated C++ program. The amount of template-in-a-template-in-a-template...(and this continues for some time) is not so readable to me. Maybe it is just me.

The "beatings" delivered by IRS will be deterministic for sure!
limaoscarjuliet··on Curl will not accept vulnerability reports during July 2026
In Poland smaller companies tell you outright: this and that person is on vacation, but plese call back in 2 weeks. Bigger companies will often ignore you and drag your problem through the vacation time.
limaoscarjuliet··on Tell HN: Meta is down
:-) Yeah, this is officially boring now. Still fun though!

How about downdetectorsdowndetectorsdowndetector.com ? Yes, it does exist.
limaoscarjuliet··on Making peace with your unlived dreams (2023)
To me, putting up a fight against the obstacles is the key to satisfying life. Yes, I'm not always winning (duh!), but it is the act of defiance that does it for me.

So yes, make peace, but do continue to say "I can do it" before you do.

limaoscarjuliet··on What Apple and Google are doing to push notifications
The first thing I do on every new phone is to turn off 99% of notifications. Messaging ones and email are first to go. I cannot stand the constant beep-beep.
limaoscarjuliet··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
EVery company that comes up with a product that brings a lot of gravy turns into place where people like this flourish. They have always been there - they would ask your question to many people, get their anwers and pass the response as their own.

Nowadays their job is much easier, just two copy pastes and lunch break.

limaoscarjuliet··on The Eternal Sloptember
Yes, the beatings will continue until morale improves!
limaoscarjuliet··on We are retiring our bug bounty program
"[...] bottleneck isn't in writing the code. It is in reading and understanding the code". 100% agreed! Furthermore, the more code is generated by AI, the fewer people will actually understand it!
limaoscarjuliet··on Proton Meet
Packet round trip between US and EU is approx. 100ms. Given acceptable latency for voice communication is below 300ms, we should not worry about that too much.
limaoscarjuliet··on Game devs explain the tricks involved with letting you pause a game
In some games - most famously Doom - entire multiplayer is based on exchanging just the inputs and the games on all connected computers are deterministic enough to provide same outcome on all of them.

I am one of the authors of Fire Fight game (1996-ish) and we pulled the same stunt. It was actually easy, we just had to build our own "random number generator" and fix all bugs with uninitialized memory :-)

limaoscarjuliet··on Git commands I run before reading any code
Some things are idioms that one repeats so often they just stick, e.g. I use "grep.... | cut -c x-y | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr" to quickly grep frequency of some events from a log file.

Don't feel bad - no one remembers them all, we just remember a few idioms we use...

limaoscarjuliet··on OpenAI closes funding round at an $852B valuation
As with every bubble, we, the people, will pay for it. There will be recession, inflation and general "one step back" to hopefully move "two steps forward" one day in the future.
limaoscarjuliet··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
It is a double edged sword - the U.S. manufacturers no longer have to compete with potentially better products from overseas, they can push lower quality to the local market for the same price.

limaoscarjuliet··on New gel restores dental enamel and could revolutionise tooth repair
I have 4 crowns, 2 done using moulds, 2 using the 3d scanner. Same doc, same office. The moulded ones were ok with some adjustments, but the 3d scanned ones were perfect since day 1. I'm happy with the progress in dentistry.

Assuming this is fiction... A good friend of mine is a professional writer. I learned from her that most of what is presented to us, readers, as fiction is really not so far removed from what really happened.
limaoscarjuliet··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City

limaoscarjuliet··on Is chain-of-thought AI reasoning a mirage?
> In fact, I think in near future it will be the norm for MLLMs to "think" and "reason" without outputting a single "word".

It will be outputting something, as this is the only way it can get more compute - output a token, then all context + the next token is fed through the LLM again. It might not be presented to the user, but that's a different story.

limaoscarjuliet··on We’re secretly winning the war on cancer
I have done mine at 50, you are half asleep, does not hurt, you do not remember anything. Fasting day before is the worst part.

All in all, nothing to worry about, just do it.
