lightwin··on Element is one of fourteen messaging apps blocked by Central Indian Government
"clown show" means something not organized well, so it's not exactly a foolish argument. Why would you hold VLC creators responsible if there are third parties spreading fake versions of it, and what can VLC do about it, and how does it help banning the original version? Why they need to contact the "local representative of that organization" instead of catching/banning other illegal websites?

So if someone creates few fake currency notes, will they ban all the original currency notes instead of catching the culprit?

Oh well, on that note, I remembered they did ban all currency notes of Rs.500 denomination to fight corruption, and then released new notes of "Rs.2000 denomination".

lightwin··on Element is one of fourteen messaging apps blocked by Central Indian Government
So they banned the original source after finding out that there were illegitimate versions of VLC disguised as the real package?

How did it solve the problem? Don't you think that after they banned the original, there would have been even more illegitimate versions?

lightwin··on Indian police say rats ate 600kg of cannabis from station storeroom
>> Police in neighbouring Bihar state in the same year claimed rats had drunk nearly one million litres of alcohol kept in storerooms in one of the country’s few dry states.

Apparently, rats have learnt how to open the alcohol bottles. /s ;)

lightwin··on Clear snow the laziest way
Nothing too innovative. But a hair dryer on hot setting will be very helpful in such a case. :)
lightwin··on If India's Ruling Party IT Head report a post, Meta will take it down
I agree, Meta has never done anything like this before. Fully transparent and honest organization, its always working for best interest of people and democracies.

lightwin··on Ask HN: Can small teams maintain Electron apps?
As other comments also mentioned, maintaining an Electron app is not much different than any other JavaScript application.

My team used to work on large electron & non-electron apps. We used to have a tech-debt ticket every couple of sprints to review and update various packages in order to take care of any potential vulnerabilities.

Most of time updating packages is as simple as running "npm audit fix" command. But sometime we had to manually update major versions of some of the packages and while doing so, we had to take care of any potential breaking changes.

Having a good set of automated regression tests really helps with the process.

lightwin··on Zoom Alternatives for Longer Meetings?
I recently used skype for a similar purpose and liked it. Its free, there is no time limit, and best of all we were able to record the whole session so that students were able to watch it again if they needed to revise the lesson. [1]

lightwin··on Tell HN: Your old Yahoo Mail emails are probably gone
I want to name and shame Verizon (as they own Yahoo) for this shitty policy.

I lost 15 years of memories and documents. I didn't login to YahooMail for a year, and it was all gone when I tried to login after that. Everything was gone without a single warning to my secondary email or linked mobile number.

I understand they simply wanted to get rid of all free users asap. Someone at Verizon management came up with this stupid idea of deleting all inactive accounts. What a way to ruin a brand.

Not sure if it's related but they also have a Customer Data Security Breach Litigation Settlement ongoing. If you had a Yahoo account at any time between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016 and are a resident of the United States or Israel, you may submit a claim for a cash payment up to $358.80 , and You may additionally provide documentation or proof to receive reimbursement of up to $25,000.00 in out-of-pocket losses. lightwin··on What happens to your emails after you die
Well, don't login to it for one year and poof.
lightwin··on What happens to your emails after you die
In my case Verizon (Yahoo) deleted my whole email inbox while I am still alive... who cares when we die... these companies think we users are just sheep.
lightwin··on Tell HN: Verizon quietly deleted my YahooMail inbox after 1 year of inactivity
They are launching some new Yahoo phone service while doing this to so many users. What a stupid idea.
lightwin··on Tell HN: Verizon quietly deleted my YahooMail inbox after 1 year of inactivity
Hope "Verizon" goes bankrupt ;)
lightwin··on Tell HN: Verizon quietly deleted my YahooMail inbox after 1 year of inactivity
You are lucky that you still have your emails since 2001. In my case Verizon wipes my whole inbox.
lightwin··on IRS scams:A taxi driver saved an elderly woman from being scammed out of $25,000
Implementing a tech solution might still be more doable than trying to educate a million people.
lightwin··on IRS scams:A taxi driver saved an elderly woman from being scammed out of $25,000
Few days ago I was waiting in car at a traffic signal. A young woman came running to me and pledged for help. She said she needed a ride to nearest bank branch. It was very cold weather and she was shivering without wearing any winter jacket etc. Looking at her face I sensed something was wrong. I just asked and she told me in a low voice that she was going to pay someone $9000 to avoid a potential arrest. She was still on call with the scammer as he asked her to keep talking to him on way to bank. It took me lot of time to convince her to hang up the phone. After that I dropped her back at her home. I am still thinking how many like her are being scammed everyday and what can we do to help.
lightwin··on Nuclear power station incident in Ontario Canada
They probably scared lots of people and people might take any potential future alerts less seriously. Hope you heard of a boy who was crying wolf.
lightwin··on Nuclear power station incident in Ontario Canada
Honestly we dont know if something is going on behind the scenes. What was someone trying to do by creating and sending this alert in early morning? :o
lightwin··on Ask HN: What's the current sentiment on JWT for stateless auth tokens?
JWT helped me to achieve authentication and authorization without needing to make a trip to database on every API call. I use to store user role code in the token.

I kept the token expiry to an hour or two depending upon the usecase.

Added logic to client to refresh the token right before expiry of existing token. Otherwise, on token expiry, server returns 401 and client can attempt to refresh token or send user to login page.

If there is a need of instant revocation, then I can maintain a list of revoked tokens for the duration of token life (1-2 hours) in cache layer. After 1-2 hours token will be expired anyway.

lightwin··on Ask HN: What are some projects I can build to better learn software engineering?
It might also help if you start taking code challenges on any site like freecodecamp [1]. You can pick any series of lessons and it will help you to gain hands-on experience while learning step by step.

Once you feel confident, start making your personal website or online resume. You can keep all the source code on some public website like github. It will also be handy while sending your code samples to potential employers.
