lights0123··on Stadia Is a Major Driver of Vulkan Adoption
Does Android not support standard Vulkan as well?
lights0123··on Ask HN: If I enter account or order in a phone tree, why am I asked again?
As a counter-example: DHL is the only company I've called that does forward information to humans.
lights0123··on Patent Trolls Inbound: Our First Lawsuit
The key is if. If "members of that group transfer legit patents to the patent troll", every other member receives a license for that patent.
lights0123··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
"Token" hints at everything-is-metered B2, not their unlimited backup plan.
lights0123··on The Zoom installer let a researcher hack his way to root access on macOS
To auto-update without requiring authentication every time. Useful for multi-user or enterprise setups where the current user may not have sudo access. Chrome and Firefox do the same thing.
lights0123··on Thank you to our maintainers
It changes different settings in the font. In GitHub's case, they use the font "Alliance No.1". ss02 doesn't appear to have a visible effect, but ss01 changes the letter a from a rounded body with a stem on top to a rounded body with a straight stem on the right. You may have custom fonts disabled—these feature settings do the right thing on GitHub's and ProtonMail's ("Arizona") fonts, but make your system fonts do weird things. Both sites appear just fine for me on Firefox on Linux.
lights0123··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
Algebra I also generally includes systems of (2 or 3) linear equations, quadratics (different equation forms, factoring, graphing, solving) and basic exponential functions (although usually just recognizing them and filling in Ce^rt).
lights0123··on EU reaches deal to make USB-C a common charger for most electronic devices
What do you mean? USB-C is covered by the same trademark licensing scheme (that isn't technically needed if you don't use the USB logo and use your chip's default vendor ID) as USB-A is, a $6000 one-time + $5000/year payment to USB-IF.
lights0123··on VSCodium – Free/Libre Open Source Software Binaries of VS Code
That will run both the backend and the frontend on the remote server, while VS Code SSH will only run the backend on the remote. ssh -X is very slow for a complex GUI across a non-local network.
lights0123··on Confess your love with zero-knowledge
You could reveal the hash letter-by-letter and stop as soon as a letter differs so there's more possibilities.
lights0123··on What are the odds that some idiot will name his mutex ether-rot-mutex (2017)
Although SciPy retains an alias for compatibility, the preferred name has changed: https://github.com/scipy/scipy/issues/12924
lights0123··on Robinhood aims to court users with 1% interest rate on cash
Only with direct deposit set up, otherwise it's 0.70%.
lights0123··on Tilde.town is a computer meant for sharing
> If the person can't read the email, then they can't read the key.

You’re sending them your public key, not receiving a private key.

lights0123··on Nvidia releases open-source GPU kernel modules
They only really care about Linux usage in embedded computers (Jetson) and in datacenters, and Free drivers would allow you to modify them to permit using consumer GPUs in virtual machines. Currently, you need to spend significantly more money for an enterprise GPU that has the same specs as a consumer GPU just so the driver will allow you to use GPU passthrough. They did recently allow consumers to pass a GPU to a single Windows VM guest so you could run a Windows-only game, but you can't split access to the single GPU among multiple VMs.
lights0123··on Free Open Source Tailwind CSS Components
Here's in v3, but it was added in the v1 docs: https://tailwindcss.com/docs/reusing-styles#extracting-compo...
lights0123··on Zero downtime migrations
> The biggest issue with SQLite is what happens if your server serving stuff goes down mid write?

Why would that matter? SQLite is still fully ACID compliant like other DBs.

lights0123··on Free Open Source Tailwind CSS Components
Tailwind specifically recommends creating components with a JS framework that look like the former.
lights0123··on TurboTax’s fight against free tax filing
CashApp Taxes provides audit defense for free: https://taxeshelp.cash.app/s/article/Audit-Defense-when-you-...
lights0123··on Automate Public Certificates Lifecycle Management via RFC 8555 (ACME)
> only for Google Cloud customers

for which there's no payment required as far as I can tell—just creating a Google Cloud account.

lights0123··on Microsoft says changing taskbar location in Windows 11 is not important
> When you think about having the taskbar on the right or the left, all of a sudden the reflow and the work that all of the apps have to do to be able to understand the environment is just huge.

"the work that all of the apps have to do to be able to understand the environment" should be none? Unless "apps" refers to something other than standard Windows applications, there shouldn't be any difference since Windows 10.

lights0123··on Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will'
They absolutely did in my US city during the pandemic—every restaurant at least temporarily only provided menus via QR codes at the front.
lights0123··on Librem 5: First Impressions
Anbox is similar to Docker, not a VM. It uses the host Linux kernel, just running the Android userspace in a namespace.
lights0123··on NPM package compromised by author: erases files on RU / BY computers on install
> On March 8, at 7:25PM GMT+2 and less than four hours after node-ipc@10.1.3 had been published to roll back the destructive payload, a new major version node-ipc@11.0.0 was released on the npmjs registry.

The old version erased files, the new one leaves a file on the desktop.

lights0123··on Lessons Learnt Moving a GTK Application from Go to Ada
Qt6 still doesn't have a lot of modules ported to it though, as it really hadn't been around that long.
lights0123··on Huawei MatePad Paper – eInk Tablet
Cloud sync is also available by default without a subscription, just limited to files that were modified in the past 60 days.
lights0123··on What is the purpose of check-in before flying? (2014)
For some airports with low amounts of traffic, there isn't a separate precheck line, so you're just given some sort of marker that tells the workers to treat you as a precheck member in the standard line.
lights0123··on Play Wordle from Your Terminal
Just needs integration with e.g. OpenRGB to change the colors of the physical keys on supported keyboards :)
lights0123··on Autodocumenting Makefiles
I wanted to use Just at one point, but was disappointed that it doesn't support parallel execution. I ended up making a quick tool to convert a ZSH file into a Ninja file to take advantage of its pool feature.
lights0123··on My dishwasher won’t start until I let it update its firmware over the WiFi
Notifications is the big reason: because cycle times are usually just estimates, you can't just set a timer for when it'll be done.
lights0123··on LTO Tape data storage for Linux nerds
You mention that they're advertised in the amount of compressed data that can be stored, not that they actually compress data themselves. I thought you meant that they assume you use a compression algorithm yourself.
