lightbritefight··on VMware Kills Off 56 Products
Check put XCP-NG if youre looking in this space. Its a mature xenserver fork with a much improved interface. Migrations work well, and it has a comparatively inexpensive vsan equivalent that works well if you prefer a hyperconverged route.
lightbritefight··on VMware Kills Off 56 Products
You should tell whoever wrote this kb and the associated articles that the language is opaque, confusing and contradictory.

Your potential customers will not enter your sales funnel with this kind of strange and misshapen noise happening about your products.

lightbritefight··on Bosses are using RTO mandates as a way to blame employees as a scapegoat
Exactly. Launching is easy. Launching something stable and making incremental improvements is hard.

Twitter doesnt seem to be doing the latter.

lightbritefight··on Tesla Cybertruck Charging Curve Confirms Poor Charging Performance
Nio has some battery swap models that let you drive into a bay and it swaps the battery out for you in 5min or so.

That design is likely the only one that would really work with a "change the battery chemistry" option. All other electronic vehicles seem to use the battery ad the base of the car in a sled design, so updating the battery would be a 10k kind of affair, if possible.

lightbritefight··on Workers in Sweden Will Expand Strike Against Tesla
That is an active stance of UPS. They wont cross picket lines to deliver.

Apparently their sotesre even has "Strike" listed as a reason for non delivery, option N:

Use products on open protocols. Zigbee is the current standard. Anyhting using a zigbee radio, and to a lesser extent another protocol called zwave, can talk to any hub with a compatible radio. They are local, dedicated radio networks that do not have to talk to anyone else's servers.

There is a newer protocol called "matter" that a lot of big names have gotten behind. These devices are slowly rolling out, but id check for matter compatibility with any hub at this point.

As for the hubs, use open source that are not cloud based. The largest and most active project is called Home assistant. Its robust, has good options to build it yourself or buy devices, and it's dedicated to being forever FOSS. Another hub in the same "local, FOSS" ethos is called Hubitat. Their UI/hardware was easier than home assitant for a long time, but not really anymore. I still consider them more "turnkey" but both systems work great and support literally thousands of devices.

Opengarage is a similar option that comes out of the box ready to go. Also FOSS.

lightbritefight··on Rising pay transparency causing an employer compensation information 'arms race'
These laws make that easier to do. Not hard to pull up the job listing at your company and make sure youre making what's offered.
lightbritefight··on U.S. Consumers Spent More on Food in 2022 Than Ever Before (Inflation Adjusted)
His example of the McChicken increased from $1 to $4.70 in 10 years.

That's a 4.7x increase, which is close enough to 6x in colloquial conversation to convey the same point.

lightbritefight··on Google owes executive $1M after losing gender bias lawsuit
That deeply sexist comment about how he would need to get "big tits and look like an instagram model?"

Nope, still very visible to the world.

lightbritefight··on Cratering motor fuel sales in Norway show the death spiral that can end oil
There are endless street level, public EV chargers in Seattle with cables.

Some random chargers being vandalized isn't really indicative of anything.

lightbritefight··on Cratering motor fuel sales in Norway show the death spiral that can end oil
Now imagine if instead of those 25 pumps, each parking spot in the regular costco parking lot had a charging station. Suddenly 25 min isn't a big deal, and you "fuel" just as many, if not more cars in the same time frame as the mega large gas station, which itself could be even more charging spots.
lightbritefight··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
Rich people are just as impulsive as poor people. They are simply insulated from consequences of that impulsiveness.

The things they do get covered up, or are behind closed doors because they can afford to close those doors.

Wealth does not buy you impulse control, at all. The exact opposite, actually, as every whim can be met.

lightbritefight··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan’s War on San Francisco Politics Has Only Just Begun
"Changing it" woukd require a constitutional amendment, which is a near impossibly in today's landscape.

When the corrective mechanism is nearly impossible to invoke, it doesnt really matter who wants what.

lightbritefight··on “X” Didn’t Pay Severance. Now It’s Facing 2,200 Cases – and Big Fees
The purchase contract had language in that that current twitter employees would be paid out severance via the then current twitter standards. He signed said contract.

He also publicly promised severance to all employees he laid off, when laying them off, then tried to back out of it after the fact.

So we have both contract law and public statements that he owes severance to thousands of people, and now is just refusing to pay. What kind of behavior is that?

lightbritefight··on None of us are truly living off the grid
Another layer to this is that even if they have an active hobby farm that is self-sustaining, do they have medical skills? Can they set a broken leg, deliver a baby, and pull a rotted tooth? Do they have the technical skills to maintain various equipment, even if its renewable?

The irony for a lot of the prepper community is that the most efficient "off grid" social structure is concept that they strongly oppose, the commune. A small community working together for a common good in a shared space.

lightbritefight··on Tesla repossessed my car due to an extreme oversight on their end
Cashiers checks are not traditional checks that only withdraw funds on deposit.

A casihiers check debits the money from you account on issue. As soon as the bank gives you the check, the money is out of your account. A cashiers check cannot bounce for this reason. Its why it or a wore transfer are the required payment type for large purchases of this type.

lightbritefight··on Developers are building communities that act as their own miniature power grids
It's Germany only at the moment. They intend to expand worldwide in 2024.
lightbritefight··on Conduit: Simple, fast and reliable chat server powered by Matrix
Seems like they know that the audience for an open source game is going to be FOSS nerds first, gamers second. Leading with Rust makes a lot of sense in the list of descriptions.
lightbritefight··on I don't know how I feel about email
How is you private life have way less data then you public life?

Email accounts have waaaaayy more information about you than a public social media account. I can find out your private thoughts, the things you buy, who you owe money too, your social graph, tons and tons of data. I can find out way more about than from some comments on a nerd forum.

lightbritefight··on We're Not Even Close to EVs Being as Cheap as Gas Cars, Mercedes Says
If EVs were the mainstream instead of ICE, Costco would slap a charger on each of the spaces in its giant parking lots instead. Charging would either be free with membership to incentivize you hanging out inside the store, or cost near market rate for electricity.

There would be zero lines to charge, at all.

lightbritefight··on Why is California wasting millions on hydrogen fuel pumps?
If by worse electric trains you mean electric trains that can solve the last mile problem all in one mode of transit, then yes.

Visual a bus that picks you up at its regular stops, but when it enters the highway of uses a long stretch of overhead wire to use nil battery.

You get the benefits of scale and flexibility of a bus, but at a reduced cost than train infrastructure while still moving many, many more people than a car.

lightbritefight··on Coronavirus has disrupted supply chains for nearly 75% of U.S. companies
Can be fixed, but wont necessarily be fixed. In fact, it means that multiple levels can be incompetent or even actively malicious, increasing the dysfunction past what a central authority is capable of. Each "check and balance" can be used to force an otherwise working system into deadlock, which can have very destructive to whomever or whatever depends on that system.

You can see this in our easily manipulated and poorly deployed voting system, our poor response to the current pandemic, our limited and overly expensive healthcare, on and on.

lightbritefight··on Hit by Big Loss, Bird Seeks $300M in New Funds
Bird most likey is the "employer." They have a gig economy model where people are paid a rate per scooter to pick them up, charge them and drop them off at a specific location.

Its doubtful the truck driver was an employee of bird, but its also likely they were only moving the scooters because of this model. That sounds like enough of a reason to add them to the suit that will also likely hit the driver.

lightbritefight··on Arsenic in Some Bottled Water Brands at Unsafe Levels, Consumer Reports Says
If you workout and have sharp, sudden muscle cramps in the affected areas, youre in need of electrolytes.

If you are about to do the same workout that causes the above, its a good idea to imbide them beforehand instead.

lightbritefight··on Personal data of 2.9M people leaked from Desjardins
No, you do what he explained. Those DBs might have access to the customer DB, but no USB on those system. That access would also be logged at another location, listing date/time/user. It might also require a sign off from a manager/team that reviews record access of more than say 10,000 clients, etc. DBs would be informed of all these security factors, to desuade individuals from making bad choices.

Individually, none of the above would stop this kind of breach. Altogether, and it might be enough. You amply defense in depth
