lgregg··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
The ransom payment isn't really a theft or robbery, they didn't have to give it.
lgregg··on Belgian man has been receiving pizzas he never ordered for years
I keep getting amazon packages to my apartment from a former tenant. I try to decline them but they sometimes get delivered while I'm not home. I can at least put return to sender letters in mailboxes. How do you deal with boxes?

If it's a gmail account the lady's email and fiance could be jane.smith vs janesmith and still go to the same inbox.
lgregg··on Ask HN: If you could work remote where would you live?
I would probably move back to Texas or just hop from airbnb to airbnb internationally.
lgregg··on Ask HN: Looking for side project ideas
Yeah, but you're making an assumption, who said it had to be multi-choice answers?

Why can't someone build a NLP model to test essays of middle schoolers or high schoolers graders on American history? You can look for learning objectives in the essay and grade upon that.

Why not build a tool with D3 or another modeling tool to teach chemistry? You could have them build compounds and then if they make a mistake, insert via a tool tip and tell them why. As they combine things, you read out what it is or test them based on the string they put in for the compound. You have to build it and name it correctly.

How do you become a co-chair of a working group like this?
lgregg··on No engineer has ever sued because of constructive post-interview feedback
I interviewed at a startup here in NYC. It was one of my very first interviews as I interviewed for my first job.

In the final thank you email thread I asked:

Hi [redacted],

I really appreciated the speed of this entire process. I must admit, I'm bummed but understand; I also really do appreciate the feedback, both positive and negative. If you have any specifics on where I was specifically lacking, I would appreciate knowing but if Tempest's policy limits you from going much deeper, I understand that too.

I wish you the best at building your team; You'll find the person you're looking for. :)

Till next time!

Best, lgregg

So, I then got direct actionable feedback. They’re not long explanations (I.e. on X you should have considered Y) but we’re very specific and super helpful.

I now have told this story many times and pointed people to try that company.

I think startups are more inclined to do this than companies after their Series C.

lgregg··on Ask HN: How Do You Sleep?
I have found if I sleep with the room lights on or being woken up by the sun I feel much more rested.

I’m surprised how many originals are still being used.

China and Taiwan don't have a great relationship. China claims Taiwan but Taiwan claims to be independent. There is a shadow affirmation by most world powers about Taiwan's independence. (i.e. the US hasn't affirmed their state but sells them guns)
lgregg··on Nixon Got Pushed Out by Republicans. Trump Might, Too
So, what makes something an "intellectually interesting angle"? I just read the news guidelines again and we are told not to editorialize and stick with the original title. There are political posts on HN every day that don't get flagged. I really do want to understand lens where this article isn't intellectually interesting.

I posted this because it covers the a potential near future where politics repeats itself in a big way which means it's potentially turning into a pattern. That's why I posted this article. Also, to say this situation is "garden-variety politics" is wrong on so many levels in my opinion. Sure, if this was an article talking about the purchase order of jet fighter being delayed, I'd agree with you; This article is talking about a party pushing their representative out of the white house. How is that garden-variety politics?

lgregg··on The bible of doing business with the city of New York

lgregg··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
I have photography equipment that I used while working a media consultant. It was a 100% deductible business expense back then, I get a tax break every year as they continue to "depreciate". It's been a few years, I still do some photography on the side mostly portraits or headshots.
lgregg··on JSON as configuration files: please don’t (2016)
Yeah! No problem, this is the app version:

I’m using an iPhone SE

You might want to fix your site: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yg58z7hztlez3ff/ScreenRecording_04...

It’s unreadable in Brave on my phone.

lgregg··on Netlify Dev
It's basically Heroku for the static generated site ecosystem.

I'm currently building a Gatsby/React site for a small grocery store chain, Netlify makes the process easy with hooks, cli, and many things I found on Heroku. Sure, I could host it elsewhere that has an S3 service but then I have to worry about configuration.

lgregg··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
> Walt Disney World will still be there in 2021.

I think you'll have to wait awhile. These policy tools have been under both parties starting with GWB far as the initial PATRIOT Act (I think?). Right now, we're at a point where the USA might, but unlikely, go back to an isolationist policy far as borders.

At a meta level, this is a debate around internationalism vs globalism. Currently, Earth is in an era of internationalism. There is a desire by lots of people to move towards Globalism.

lgregg··on Ask HN: Will you buy a 7 inch smartphone?
No, I have an iPhone SE. I’ll just buy a used phone or one the same size. If I can’t wrap my fingers around my phone or forget it’s in my pocket, no bueno.
lgregg··on Nike and Boeing Are Paying Sci-Fi Writers to Predict Their Futures
I think it's likely that if we were to see them as "alien" they would need to be the same or very very similar to human form. Otherwise, it's likely we'd just call them a beast of some sort. Would you say a Gorilla is alien to a Human? They're not that different. Would you say a Dolphin and a Human are too different? They both have the capacity for independent thought, a consciousness, and are self-aware.
