lgl··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
LumoTray [0] - A multi-purpose system tray app for Windows. It is currently:

- Wallpaper manager with multi-monitor support and multiple image sources. Change wallpapers daily, hourly, etc.

- Lockscreen image manager with the same modes as the wallpaper feature.

- Screensaver/fullscreen modes manager with many screensaver options and multi-monitor support.

- Custom shortcut menu builder where you can have a custom menu accessible from your tray area.

lgl··on Can modern LLMs count the number of b's in "blueberry"?
So... The LLM only goes into effect after 10000 "old school" if statements?
lgl··on Webflow Down for >31 Hours
Comment of the year 2025! Thanks for that :D
lgl··on Are we building AI coding assistants wrong?
Isn't the main reason the split between dev, stage and prod exactly to weed out these sorts of issues?

An incompetent/distrated/etc dev can do just as much damage as an AI on these cases.

Just dont blindly give prod access to any entity.

lgl··on Million Times Million
Numberphile did a video on this many years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-52AI_ojyQ
lgl··on $20K Bounty Offered for Optimizing Rust Code in Rav1d AV1 Decoder
I may be wrong but if you're one of the "big guys" doing video then a 5% performance difference probably translates into millions of $ in the CPU/GPU bill
lgl··on No as a Service
Bug report: when the server is overloaded, the No's are no longer random :)
lgl··on Show HN: I built a modern Goodreads alternative
Sure, but can we really deny that the 5 star rating is pretty decent and simple, having an exact middle point and then two levels for each side.
lgl··on Developers should embrace creative coding again
I, a php/js web developer, have over the past few years launched and maintained a C# .NET app and can testify that the experience has been overall pretty positive as somebody that had never even launched visual studio before except for playing around unity and doing some tutorials.

And I say this even after the adventure of trying to decipher whatever Microsoft is doing/going with their 4 or 5 competing frameworks and SDKs.

But I still find huge value and love a good web app whenever what you need doesn't really need to be native which was not my case.

There will still be uses for native apps for a long time IMHO.

lgl··on Every default macOS wallpaper
Well, it's not for MacOS, but software to run animated wallpapers exist for Windows.

One example is the very popular WallpaperEngine [0]. Another cool one (and open source) is Lively Wallpaper [1].

Selfless plug: I've also developed and released LumoTray [2] which is a wallpaper/screensaver manager for windows with some other extra features but without any animated wallpapers except slideshows as I still find it a bit of a resource waste for something that I rarely see.

lgl··on Ask HN: Best of Open-Source
OBS and Blender come to mind. But I'm sure I'm forgetting many, many more.
lgl··on ESA’s new Ariane 6 rocket passed a major full-scale rehearsal
This is the correct sentiment and although I absolutely love what SpaceX has acheived, whenever there is some news about a new (or old) rocket here on hn, here comes a bunch of folks stating that everybody should just stop everything they're doing and just hire SpaceX for everything forever. Very cultish imo.
lgl··on UHZ1: NASA telescopes discover record-breaking black hole
The article states that even though it's roughly in the direction of a galaxy cluster that's 3.5 billion light years away, further observations by JWST found it to in fact be some staggering 13.2 billion light years away.

From the article:

> The extremely distant black hole is located in the galaxy UHZ1 in the direction of the galaxy cluster Abell 2744. The galaxy cluster is about 3.5 billion light-years from Earth. Webb data, however, reveal that UHZ1 is much farther away than Abell 2744. At some 13.2 billion light-years away, UHZ1 is seen when the universe was only 3% of its current age.

lgl··on Zenbleed
The only series 5000 cpu's that are still using Zen2 architecture are apparently the 5300U, 5500U and 5700U, which all use socket FP6 (mobile/embedded).

So I'm guessing it shouldn't affect any of the more recent and very popular Zen3 cpus like the 5600, 5700 etc. I personally own a 5600, which are a great bang for buck.

lgl··on More than 75% of Steam games tested are playable or verified on the Steam Deck
Agreed, these are two brilliant games from Playdead. Apparently they've been hard at work and are hiring for their 3rd title, which I personally can't wait! Definitely worth a buy/play.
lgl··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
Yeah it's probably qw only. It's pretty easy to get it running these days with the recent clients. You can just download a qw client (ezquake recommended [0]) and extract the executable to your quake folder.

Alternatively you can download nQuake [1], a full pack with most things included except for the non-shareware maps. You can then just place the pak1.pak file inside the id1 folder and make it complete.

Good luck ;)

lgl··on Men who helped run Megaupload sentenced to prison in New Zealand
It was very obviously for piracy and copyright infringement. The Mega*.com indictment [0] even reported that one of Kim's wishes was to make a 1-to-1 copy of youtube and were in the process of scraping videos from youtube to megavideo so as to make people assume megavideo was a user generated content website and not video storage for pirated/copyrighted content.

lgl··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
Just FYI, John Romero also streams occasionally on Twitch at https://www.twitch.tv/theromero
lgl··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
That should be a known bug on a specific teleport that exists on the DM2 map. Not sure if it's also present on "regular" Quake but it's been on QuakeWorld for as long as I can remember.

On the backroom (where there is Red Armor and Mega Health) there is a teleport that goes to the main (BIG) room of the map.

If you jump just before the teleport and "aim" your jump so you go in the top left corner of the teleport, you'll get stuck inside the teleport but not go through until you move a bit.

Also, staying stuck for too long on that teleport during a game, will drown your player, which should definitely confuse your opponent as there is no water deep enough to drown players on DM2.

Good times! Long live QuakeWorld!

lgl··on Windows 11’s taskbar is finally getting labels and never combine app icons
Hopefully they'll also bring back the ability to middle click on tray icons that they apparently silently broke/removed recently when they released the so called Windows 11 Moment 2 update with these new taskbar and tray area "improvements", even though they do not acknowledge it when reporting it on the feedback hub, their github issue trackers, their twitter, etc.
lgl··on ‘Claudia’ offers nude photos for pay. Experts say she’s an AI fake
That's a nice tangent there, but for that to be a credible answer we would have to assume that any and all advanced civilizations would not want to try interstellar travel. That's the thing with this paradox, it would theoretically only need one to diverge from the norm to see it's effects.

Which I believe is also why most great filter candidates are usually not things that a species would do by choice, but instead an accidental, inevitable or inherent feature of the universe/existence.

lgl··on Judge Denies Elizabeth Holmes' Request for Release on Bail
Didn't this person steal billions and conned dozens or hundreds of investors while trying to sell snake-oil blood testing machines under the guise that it would be a great thing for the world, especially poorer countries?

What reality do you live where that is not pure 2d villain material?

lgl··on Ask HN: Dealing with people having “Computer Problem”?
Agree with this. I've been "there" many many times. My suggestion now for these cases is exactly that.

Fix the issue and do not engage with the person unless you really need to know more info on the "problem". Then just say "it's fixed: have a nice day".

Any other interactions and you will always lose. Most of these people have in their mind that you're just "the IT guy" that spends his days surfing the web/social media until they call you to fix their issues, which are "totally not something they've done and they have no idea how it happened!"

Also tempted to post so many clips from the "IT Crowd", but I'll just post this one: https://youtu.be/YDNmyyrEZho

Good luck

lgl··on Ask HN: Why do email addresses need a user name?
You could have also used "plus sign" addressing if your e-mail provider supports it.

For example, gmail supports it so if your email is bob@gmail.com you can register for services using bob+something@gmail.com and it will end up on bob's mailbox.

While this is useful, please note that this is not as private as a catch-all alternative as one can always infer the actual e-mail address by just removing the plus sign and everything after it while using a catch-all you can completely obfuscate the actual username.

lgl··on Ask HN: How Do I Plan My Application's Architecture?
As you've stated, it's hard without knowing for sure what you're wanting to build. That being said, keeping it simple is my recommendation.

If you already know SQL and need a database of some sort, use it as it's absolutely rock solid tech and used pretty much universally.

Firebase or Supabase I can't really recommend as all my stuff is always just hosted on a VPS or dedicated server. I personally still haven't needed "the cloud" for basically anything, and I'd only consider it if I had some project with a truly massive amount of traffic or that absolutely needed the auto-grow features that one can setup on most cloud provides. So, if in doubt, start with a regular server and then think about growing it out into the cloud or to better servers. Do not waste too much time going into premature optimization!

GraphQL or ReST? If you really need an API for your app, I'd go with ReST. It's simpler, has better documentation/support and much more people use and know it than GraphQL. Once you have a working ReST API you can eventually also build a GraphQL one if needed.

Don't get too stressed about or lose too much time with the tech or stack. Focus on building the "product" with the technologies that you know best, even if they're not "fashionable" or "used at FAANG" etc.

99% of the product's users will not care about the underlying technology and will only demand that the product's functionality itself works correctly and solves their problem.

Just my $0.02. Hope it helps, cheers!

lgl··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
I'm sorry, can you clarify what site you mean by RT? Is it Reddit?
lgl··on Ask HN: Why are so many PHP projects moving to Node?
Definitely agree with this. And I'll blatantly add that sometimes it even appears as some sort of elitism/not-fashionable thing.

As if suggesting something that doesn't need 12 build steps, 2 transpiler passes, and 4 discombobulator demagnetizations before you finally serve your 2mb of javascript, that will then spend another 5 seconds of your crappy cpu cycles to render something that will inevitably break your back button is some sort of bad thing.

PHP is great and will never die.

lgl··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
Of course. It is indeed a C# (WPF) application that started as .NET6 during development but eventually migrated to .NET7 as it came out shortly before I published it.
lgl··on NASA predicts asteroid to make one of closest approaches to Earth ever recorded
Only because you don't have the money or time to keep playing. But continue playing for 1 million years, and the black and red will hit a similar number of times and the green a proportionally lower number of times.
lgl··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
I've launched a Windows app on the Microsoft Store a bit over a month ago. Didn't get any traction here (as windows closed source apps rarely do) but feel free to check it out at https://lumotray.com

I have already got a few downloads from the MS store though. "Advertising" was basically just a post here, a couple of posts on reddit and some links sent to friends.
