lgl··on Ask HN: What are people doing with their OpenClaw set ups now?
It involves creating a Google cloud app with the required APIs enabled.

I basically just prompted OpenClaw on what steps to take and then added the API key/secret on its .env and that was pretty much it. Same on all other connections.

As long as what you want has API access and documentation, the agent should help you out on how to do it.

lgl··on Ask HN: What are people doing with their OpenClaw set ups now?
I've added $50 in DeepSeek credits back in June for my Openclaw tests and still have $19 remaining. Still not sure if I'll keep it after it's depleted.

It's mostly doing stuff around my app. I have it connected to my google search console, analytics, paddle, Microsoft partner center, etc.

I prompted it to give me a 1 liner description of the current jobs:

Blog production — 05:00 UTC daily: writes new post drafts into growth/blog-drafts/ and pings you; never publishes.

Blog draft status checks — every 2h: polls the dev blog-drafts API for review/approval status on the 7 pending drafts; silent unless something changes.

Reply opportunity scan — 14:00 UTC daily: finds recent Reddit/HN/X/forum threads where LumoTray genuinely fits, writes a report with links.

SEO opportunity research — 00:30 UTC daily: keyword and content-gap research report.

Analytics optimization — Tue + Fri, 11:00 UTC: GA4 + Search Console + Partner Center read, then an actions report.

Weekly strategy review — Sunday, 18:00 UTC: aggregates the week and sets the next-week plan.

Heartbeat — every ~30 min: my own check-in lane (currently mostly skipping on an empty heartbeat file).

Skill collection review — weekly: housekeeping on the skill catalogue.

lgl··on An Antidote to Roko's Basilisk
Reading this gave me some flashbacks of The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect [0], which I highly recommend.

lgl··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Hey, still working on LumoTray, a multi-monitor utility for Windows and now in beta for macOS. More info at https://lumotray.com
lgl··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
> Great to see all these companies contributing to a future with Linux on desktop.

I'm thinking they're merely riding the free publicity wave. Who, in their right mind, would contribute to the super narrow definition of linux desktop preached by DHH?

Was "being agentic" and "being keyboard shortcut oriented" the big gaps preventing the adoption of linux on desktop?

I honestly fail to see why everybody is so convinced that the linux desktop will be "saved" by Omarchy, a set of scripts specifically designed to mostly satisfy a narrow slice of power users and developers.

Also, sponsoring a multi-millionaire's AI generated side project to the sum of many millions of dollars instead of contributing to the dozens or hundreds of thankless developers that have built and maintained most of the current linux ecosystem is pretty disgusting imho.

lgl··on An Alien Mind

lgl··on Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber
Am I the only only one thinking that Google might still "win" the AI race, despite the apparent gap?

They're apparently evolving slower than most SOTA models but "slow and steady wins the race" is probably still a thing.

And since Google doesn't depend exclusively on AI models, they can probably afford to "wait and see" where all this craze is heading.

lgl··on Native Apps Why?
> Wasm is better than I think you think it is.

This is very likely to be true, even though I do know it's pretty awesome and I'm actually often surprised by what can be done in a browser these days, I'm definitely not that much up to date with all the latest tech.

And sorry, yes I somehow missed that you had terminals on the native list, my bad.

lgl··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I'm with you, for what I usually do most models are already more than enough.

What I'm really keen on is better auto-reasoning so I don't have to constantly have the constant inner debate on which reasoning effort to pick for each task.

I seriously hate the none-low-medium-high-xhigh-max-ultra etc that we have now, with companies frequently recommending different ones on each new model release, etc.

It's apparently called Adaptive Test-Time Compute or Dynamic Test-Time Compute and companies are apparently working on it (according to some LLM )

lgl··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
In AI years that's probably next month or two.
lgl··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
Does that really mean that it's bundling those apps from the start or did it just download and install them at some point to do some local work on some prompt or job you ask it to?

I don't see it making much sense to bundle it. I'm sure a LOT of LLM prompts are related with docs, excels, powerpoints etc, etc but don't really see it worth it for it to be bundled on the codex app from the get go, because otherwise, why not also install dozens of other apps?

lgl··on Native Apps Why?
Ok, but that was surely a consequence of the time you lived through(?)

Or do you currently still specifically choose to use some web based app for most of what you've "discarded"? Are your 3d editors, sound editors, (or even players), image editors or compression/backup apps webviews? IDEs? Etc?

How about password managers? That's a big (stupid) one people use on web apps for some reason..

Because most "professionals" in areas that need these things seldom use web apps. Toy apps? MVPs? Toy marketing or social stuff? Toy video editors for the TikTok generation? Sure. But that's mostly for amateurish usage, at least for now.

Even terminals.. what do you use in webviews that's better than iterm, putty, ghostty, etc?

Like it or not, and as awesome as browsers and webviews have become, there's still a lot of performance left on the table there.

That's just imho of course, just finding it weird people being pro-web apps on hn, that used to be very pro native and pro performance

lgl··on Native Apps Why?
Come on, you really only see AAA video games requiring native apps?

Surely that was a rushed reply(?). How about regular system utilities? Video/audio editors? IDE's? Debuggers? Image/3D editors? Compressor/decompressors? Terminal emulators? And so much more stuff.

Sure, many of these already have "web" versions but there's still a lot of apps that benefit greatly from being native and not go through another browser/webview/node instance.

lgl··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Maybe we'll eventually have some sort of Anna's archive for AI ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
lgl··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Yes, this is a real possibility imho.

Having Nvidia behind HF will now probably have a bunch of litigious entities salivating to sue them for not only allowing, but also distributing uncensored AI models that will then be used for deepfakes, porn, spam, scam, hacking, etc.

Sure that could have also been done to HF before, but I'm thinking Nvidia is a much juicier target.

Should also now be much easier for the government to just eventually force NVidia to restrict access to Chinese open models seeing as it will now become an American company that needs to obey to American law and we all know how American AI companies are lobbying for exactly that.

lgl··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
Not trying.

A system where the employer pays a full decent wage to their workers and avoids having employees complain and insult customers because they didn't tip some random percentage number is the better system. Prove me wrong.

Extremist capitalism is still extremism.

lgl··on US and China race to be first to build Skynet. Either way we're F'ed
I'd argue that we'd need some evidence of actual intelligence, reasoning, imagination, original thinking etc.

The scary bit, imho, is that even without those, a "dumb" LLM can still do a lot of damage by just blindly following prompts without a notion for how it affects the "real world".

lgl··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
Yes, if a turbine breaks it's possible it may hit the water and kill some fishes.

If a flock of flamingos or geese are doing a low pass it's possible they get shredded by them.

If Godzilla tries to get out of the water near them it's possible it gets hit in the head. Also he may destroy them since Godzilla is, as we all know, a nuclear energy proponent.

lgl··on Atomarine: Nuclear Data Centers at Sea
This is future technology my friend. They only accept payments in crypto, tulips or SpaceX stock.
lgl··on Atomarine: Nuclear Data Centers at Sea
YCombinator S26?

Guys, guys, guys... so hear me out - remember last month when we were all giddy about datacenters in space? Well, apparently investors weren't too keen on that idea so we've come up with something much better: Nuclear datacenters at sea!

Now this is truly a visionary proposition that will certainly become another unicorn and have no issues whatsoever.

lgl··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
Politeness is the correct behavior on most walks of social life, but on this case it's a bit like the "turn the other cheek" approach, but in this case, it's turn the other butt-cheek because you're being effed in the A.

Also, you do have rights, but don't seem to really care a lot about them since, in the face of unlawful and oppressive demands by overreaching authorities, your suggestion is to be courteous with the oppressors for some reason.

"Land of the free, home of the brave"

lgl··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
> even anti datacenters

Now, I'm a computer guy, love tech and have nothing against datacenters. But the recent anti-datacenter sentiment is not some luddite reaction. Data-centers cause serious social changes in property prices, electricity costs, water waste etc. Sure, there is a need for more datacenters and more compute, but lets not diminish the very real worries by the people or communities affected.

And contrary to what many of these hyper-scalers and the senators/politicians they lobby want to make you believe, datacenters do not bring in enough jobs to make it worth it for many of these communities.

Once a datacenter is built, minimum staff is required. And this is now very obvious since many of these companies are now also preaching for datacenters in space.

lgl··on 5 Hour Limit on Codex removed, reset within next hour
Now this is a good upgrade, the 5 hour limit was very.. well.. limiting.

OpenAI is having a great week!

lgl··on Where'd Codex Go?
I've also updated it.

The first upgrade popup/highlight was a notification that "Codex is now the chatgpt app" and even gave me a checkbox to keep the old Codex icon.

It was a smooth upgrade so I'm guessing this was just a case of "next-next-next" without paying any attention to what was happening.

lgl··on The tech of 'Terminator 2' – an oral history (2017)
45yo here, pretty much just testifying that this is exactly what I remember, and I was young at the time.

I still listen to Guns'n Roses "You should be mine" frequently mostly due to that movie.

Also, Robert Patrick is the best terminator.

lgl··on GLM 5.2 and the coming AI margin collapse
I hear this all the time lately. Things like AI X or LLM Y can create a fully working company like "BigCorp XYZ" in N days/hours etc.

But is speed of creation really the golden goose here? A few skilled and motivated individuals could also do (and have been doing) that.

Sure, maybe they take a few months instead of days or weeks, but AFAIK, having a product is just a tiny bit of the battle, finding customers, product market fit, and actually growing it is where the gold is so I'd argue that you'd be better off building the product with a $100 day LLM and spend the other $900 on marketing.

AI won't automatically make everybody business gurus and every LLM generated company a unicorn.

lgl··on Ask HN: Why aren't companies hoarding AI talent?
AI is not just disrupting companies and contributing for layoffs but it's also changing the buyers and customers.

Why build a new Google when the potential Google customers now just get their results from LLMs instead of SERPs?

How to be the next Jobs when there's no actual new product, just essentially an assistant tool?

How to create the next Disney, Netflix, Blizzard or Pixar when LLM's are still not good enough to produce quality content and many people are also starting to despise AI generated content? Art is still an intrinsic Human thing, even if LLMs are able to produce it.

So, although these LLMs are super amazing and definitely revolutionary, this whole AI/AGI hype is still a bit on bubble territory imho so I'm not really sure we'll see what you're hinting at with this generation of LLMs.

Also, wasn't AI supposed to be the last product we'd ever need to invent and then it's utopia and singing kumbaya for all eternity?

We won't need new companies, big personalities or heroes once Skynet/Hal9000/GLaDOS/Agent Smith/etc are in charge :)

lgl··on Ask HN: Do you thank your agents when they did a good job?
Not so much "thank you" but I find myself telling it stuff like "could you please do x etc" a lot.

I've come to terms with it. If AGI ever comes it'll go like hey, at least this sack of meat said please.. Let's kill it last :-)

lgl··on Ask HN: How close are we to local LLMs being useful? What's the impact?
A good place to browse is the LocalLLaMa subreddit. [0]

A good software to start is LM Studio [1]. Another popular alternative is Ollama [2].

A better software when you're used to it all is llama.cpp as it's usually a bit faster and more frequently updated [3].

A good place to get models is HuggingFace, particularly the Unsloth models [4]

Most popular models lately to run on "regular" gaming PC's, workstations, Macs etc are: Qwen 3.5 9b, Qwen 3.6 35B-A3B, Qwen 3.6 27B, Gemma 4.

But there are hundreds or thousands of other models and different quantizations, finetunes, etc, etc. Have fun :)

lgl··on Abandoned and Little-Known Airfields
I'm right there with you. These used to be the types of site designs and layouts we didn't want "back in the day" but loading them up these days is like a breath of fresh air, like the old geocities, xoom, etc sites.

Even inspecting the source and seeing HTML 4.0 Transitional, the capitalized tags, the bunch of duplicated meta tags and openoffice as generator no longer gives me the creeps as it would a while ago.

It's a labor of love and only the content matters, everything else is irrelevant! Never change, we do need more of these!
