lfpeb8b45ez··on Show HN: Vanilla JavaScript refinery simulator built to explain job to my kids
This is great, but I really thought it was going to go from crude oil to refinement to data centers to LLM tokens to explain every software developer’s job!
lfpeb8b45ez··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
How about InfoWars?
lfpeb8b45ez··on Show HN: Simple modenized .NET NuGet server reached RC

lfpeb8b45ez··on All the books I won't read
I was really hoping this would be a list of books you had decided not to read, with short (ideally flippant) justifications. Followed, inevitably, by passionate and erudite rebuttals.
lfpeb8b45ez··on That's a Lot of YAML
I find the configuration complexity clock always valuable in framing conversations like this: https://mikehadlow.blogspot.com/2012/05/configuration-comple...
lfpeb8b45ez··on Stanford creative writing program laying off lecturers
Tom Kealey, one of the lecturers quoted extensively in this article, is a fantastic teacher. I took a class with him toward the beginning of his time at Stanford, and I often find myself thinking about what I learned. Tom took us seriously, those shy and strange kids who were just waking up to our own interior lives. He read our fan fiction, our intriguing premise that went nowhere, our characters who were always bursting into tears portentously, and he helped us learn how to stop copying what we had read, and to begin to find a voice. The university statement says “However, we firmly believe that the changes advance the program’s pedagogical mission and provide promising writers with the resources to complete their books and obtain appointments at other colleges and universities.” I think that’s completely ridiculous. It will definitely do the second thing; how could it do the first? Promising writers preparing for publication have a great deal on their plate. Why would we expect them to excel in pedagogy because they write well?
lfpeb8b45ez··on Asynchronous Programming in C#
My understanding is that the .NET team is working toward this with Interceptors: https://github.com/dotnet/roslyn/blob/main/docs/features/int...

Or Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, to use their less well known Hebrew names.
lfpeb8b45ez··on Microsoft 'retires' Azure IoT Central in platform rethink
I’m not surprised by this: IoT Hub is the core infrastructure piece powering Azure IoT, and it’s not going anywhere per the article. IoT Central, which is being phased out, was a layer on top of IoT Hub and other components that always had a somewhat awkward position. By trying to offer prepackaged IoT solutions, a lot of the power features were harder to use, but the solutions weren’t really end-user ready. Given the IoT hype dying down this makes sense.
lfpeb8b45ez··on The C4 model for visualising software architecture (2017)
Yes, that’s exactly the convention that C4 specifies: add legends on every diagram and make sure things are labeled in a way that people can understand.

lfpeb8b45ez··on Hackers claim it only took a 10-minute phone call to shut down MGM Resorts
Really looking forward to hearing a thirty second clip from this call in a 2028 episode of Darknet Diaries.

lfpeb8b45ez··on Steel Threads are a powerful but obscure software design approach
Where this approach really shines is in v1 of a complex project. If you have multiple teams combining to deploy edge compute pushing data to a cloud service and talking to multiple client experiences, then a steel thread approach can help maintain sanity while requirements and contracts are evolving.
lfpeb8b45ez··on Beware of Book Blurbs
The Millions has done it again with a crackling, thrill-a-minute joyride that’s whip-smart and unexpectedly devastating.

lfpeb8b45ez··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?

lfpeb8b45ez··on Show HN: I made a writing tool that asks questions like Socrates

lfpeb8b45ez··on The Ad Hominem Fallacy Fallacy
This piece makes some interesting points, but then I realized the author is an internet pedant so none of it is worth reading.

lfpeb8b45ez··on France came to view religion as a threat to national identity
The argument here is not secularism vs Christianity but religion in general. Human history does show religion as a consistent force.
lfpeb8b45ez··on Ask HN: Why are self-taught developers deprived of “free for education” tools?
There are free tiers of software and services everywhere. Businesses make the calculation that sponsoring university students’ use of their product will create loyal paying customers down the road, and students are both easy to identify via email domain and probably more likely than the general population to make purchasing decisions on software and services.

lfpeb8b45ez··on What I Miss About Working at Stripe
Most of the comments here fall into two camps: work can be inherently meaningful, or work is transactional. I think most of us would agree that there are certain goals worth sustained sacrifice. The question is: when is work worthy?

There are life experiences such as team sports that are opportunities for great personal growth with objectively silly goals (throw the ball into the hoop). For many young adults, the experience of being part of a passionate and dedicated community is itself intoxicating. It can be work, a religious group, or a Discord server. It may not matter what the goal is, the goal is the group. As people develop deeper attachments, have a family, this goal of belonging seems less important. We begin to reexamine the goals we have aligned our life around.

Eventually, it is human to question every goal. Why did I want to squat 400 pounds? To increase the world’s GDP? Why did I want to reach the moon? To reduce suffering? We may reject this line is thinking, or we look to those who have asked this question before us, and we find an explanation that lets us move on.

lfpeb8b45ez··on Ask HN: How do you use Bitcoin in a trustless way?
You’ll need to first discover if you can trust yourself. Make sure you don’t sleepwalk, test your susceptibility to hypnotic suggestion, and talk to a medical professional you trust about other possible health conditions that could jeopardize your assets. Unfortunately, there are few cryptographically verifiable medical professionals.
lfpeb8b45ez··on Ask HN: How do I lead a team in whom I have no confidence?
First thing is that it doesn’t sound like you have a common goal. If Maverick’s goal is “build the coolest thing” and Copy-Paster’s goal is “generate code as quickly as possible”, you need to find a way to generate a shared understanding of what you are doing as a team. That could take the form of a set of principles, a set of metrics, or a cool team name. Somehow, you need to focus the team on a higher level goal than the fragmented set you have now. You also need to find someone who the Maverick respects. If it’s not you, is it your boss or a senior dev in another team?
