leonry··on Traffic Simulator
That would be another instance of the Braess paradox (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braess%27s_paradox#Traffic), correct?
leonry··on The Unreasonableness of Math Is Context Independence
How about Hilbert‘s 16th problem, would that satisfy your conditions for a counterclaim to your assertion? For a short summary, see https://mathoverflow.net/a/116530/60775 or https://valentermz.github.io/documents/slides/olivetti-2013-... for instance.

In any case, there is still the foundational crisis in the late 19th and early 20th century that‘s worth a mention.

leonry··on Weasels love German cars (2019)
Oh, I understand. Thanks for the explanation.

Regarding noisemakers, I should rather say noise making devices, I guess. Here is a company promoting theirs (quick Google search): https://mardersicher.com/marderschreck-mardersicher-ms-12v-m... Googling for an example, I just discovered that the German Wikipedia has an extensive article (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marderabwehr) on defense mechanisms! The devices are supposed to only emit ultrasound. In practice, most don't.

leonry··on Weasels love German cars (2019)
Don‘t Americans distinguish between weasels and martens? The subhead is precise in mentioning stone martens, though.

One consequence of that phenomenon is that in the suburbs of my city, you can‘t barely take a walk outside without getting annoyed by the high-pitch noisemakers that are installed in basically every garage and under most of the cars.

leonry··on America’s Liberal Social Climate and Trends: Change in 283 General Variables
This reminds me of a blog article (http://www.coding2learn.org/blog/2013/07/29/kids-cant-use-co...) that coïncidentally was published in 2013. Or to put it another way, exhibit A of anecdotal evidence.
leonry··on A Computer Technique for Displaying N-Dimensional Hyperobjects (1967) [pdf]
Maybe this blog entry is another good starting point: https://ciechanow.ski/tesseract/ and references therein (at the end).

It has been discussed on HN a while ago.

leonry··on Ask HN: Any offline privacy-friendly sleep and fitness trackers?
I remember that Beurer (https://www.beurer.com/web/de/produkte/active/sport-und-akti...) was once recommended because of offering a cloud-free tracker. It worked quite fine, but I eventually stopped using it. That was about five years ago, bear in mind.

I can only find a single tracker in their US store (https://www.shop-beurer.com/collections/active/products/beur...), but this is (an updated version of) the one I had.

leonry··on Latin as she is spoke: How classicists tricked themselves (2019)
There are quite some examples of contemporary Latin speakers, wow! However, I am surprised that Luke Ranieri (https://lukeranieri.com/) is not mentioned.
leonry··on Grocy: Self-Hosted Groceries Management
I just found out about it too on F-Droid! It appears to have been discussed once before: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22646358

Axel Springer is into academic publishing? I guess you rather meant Julius Springer, now Springer Nature (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springer_Nature)
leonry··on Paper Relied on Outdated Default to Conclude Regression P-Values Are Inadequate
Original article title "Hyping Fisher: The Most Cited 2019 QJE Paper Relied on an Outdated Stata Default to Conclude Regression p-values Are Inadequate" too long for submission.
leonry··on Briar Desktop for Linux
If you understand German, then I recommend the review by Mike Kuketz (https://www.kuketz-blog.de/briar-anonymitaet-und-sicherheit-...). Maybe you get a decent translation with Deepl, though I stay wary.

There is also a comparison to other messenger systems on https://www.freie-messenger.de/systemvergleich/. They have a PDF in English available, but it doesn't really tell much.

leonry··on The Line, Saudi Arabia
Deserts are an important ecosystem and do have their share in cooling the planet, cf. https://climatefeedback.org/claimreview/deserts-cool-the-pla...
leonry··on Why I've stopped submitting to ArXiv
Oh, that was not my intention. Sometimes I wonder how much traffic HN generates. FWIW the article has been cached by Google (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:I15LV50...).
leonry··on Why I've stopped submitting to ArXiv
The post has no date, but the article in question is from 2020, cf. http://www.astro.multivax.de:8000/helbig/research/publicatio...
leonry··on Zotero: Free, easy-to-use tool to collect, organize, cite, and share research
Similar to other commenters I would prefer some things over how they are done by Zotero. But what holds me back from switching to another solution is clearly the community. There are enough plug-ins to make Zotero work more as I wish and the people at the forum (https://forums.zotero.org/discussions) are very helpful.
leonry··on Crows are self-aware just like us, says new study (2020)
The problem of other minds is very much a serious problem in philosophy, cf. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/other-minds/
leonry··on The Fashionable Face: A Work in Progress (2016)
There is an open challenge at the end of the post.
leonry··on Quiet Mark of the Noise Abatement Society
From the about section (https://www.quietmark.com/what-is-quiet-mark): "Quiet Mark is the independent global certification programme associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation (est.1959). Through scientific testing and assessment Quiet Mark identifies the quietest products in multiple categories spanning many sectors, including: home appliances and technology, building sector materials and commercial sector products. leonry··on Ask HN: Best Alternative to Homebrew in 2021?
I cannot remember why, but I chose pkgsrc (https://pkgsrc.joyent.com/install-on-osx/). It is however of varying quality.

leonry··on Scientists quit journal board, protesting ‘grossly irresponsible’ Covid study
Out of curiosity, are there notable journals for mathematics that are published by MDPI?
leonry··on ‘Frenssh’ as it was ‘spak’ in medieval England
I sometimes end up at some blog hosted by Hypotheses (https://hypotheses.org), self-dubbed as a "platform for humanities and social science research blogs". The quality of the posts is usually good. Blogs are in English, Spanish, French or German.
leonry··on Does the Universe Have Higher Dimensions? Part 1
The imbalace in observed particles could come from the fact that we move in the same (time) direction as electrons but the opposite (time) direction of positrons, couldn't it?
leonry··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
For Firefox, you can select multiple tabs using CMD or SHIFT (if they're all adjacent one to another), then store them in one folder via the right-click menu (should read something like "Add tabs as bookmarks...")
