legalcorrection··on Hispaniola's great divergence
The reparations were not for independence, but for the genocide the revolting slaves committed against every white person they could find in Haiti.
legalcorrection··on Are language models deprived of electric sleep?
I don't mean to suggest that animals don't also have consciousness, or that it's not important to explaining their behavior too.
legalcorrection··on Are language models deprived of electric sleep?
I strongly disagree. Pure behaviorism is just willful blindness. Consciousness is a real phenomenon, as any person not philosophically committed to denying its existence can tell you. It's front and center of our experience of human cognition. It would be quite strange for it to serve no function in the human mind.

Yeah, it's hard to quantify and isolate and experiment on, but that just speaks to either current limitations of human science, or possibly to limitations that cannot be surpassed. Given how much mileage certain philosophical movements have gotten out the common intuition that emerged during the Elightenment that everything is scientifically tractable, I understand the resistance to accepting these limitations and opening the door to all of the philosophical consequences of that intuition failing. But sorry, reality doesn't care about your philosophical attachments.

legalcorrection··on Are language models deprived of electric sleep?
Pretending consciousness doesn't exist or that it has no function I think reflects poorly on someone who studies human behavior.
legalcorrection··on Show HN: Pg_jsonschema – A Postgres extension for JSON validation
It’s funny to think about where we’d be if someone had come up with a better xml syntax before json took off.
legalcorrection··on Show HN: Pg_jsonschema – A Postgres extension for JSON validation
So we’ve come full circle and now JSON is just XML with lighter syntax.
legalcorrection··on FCC: TikTok is unacceptable security risk and should be removed from app stores
Stupid article and headline. Not the FCC, an FCC Commissioner.
legalcorrection··on SATAn: Air-Gap Exfiltration Attack via Radio Signals from SATA Cables
I thought a thumbdrive was the attack vector for stuxnet.
legalcorrection··on The slow march of progress in programming language tooling
Okay but VS uses git now.
legalcorrection··on Picking up free lithium cells off the street and making them safe for use
That's literally true but that's inefficient. The question is whether it's more inefficient than whatever you try to do to solve it and the risk it does more harm than good.
legalcorrection··on Unix didn't use to support '#!', a brief history
Windows handles Unicode just fine. It’s just not UTF-8. The reason they used # is that it’s on the standard keyboard.

But hey, don’t let me get in the way of some ignorant Windows-bashing.

legalcorrection··on Rocky Linux 9.0
You are confused. Read my comment again. I’m just saying, if you don’t want people cloning your software and competing with you for support contracts, then don’t make it open source. It’s absurd to make your product open source, use open source as a marketing point, incorporate millions upon millions of lines of other peoples code into your product, and then complain when people do exactly what your open source license gives them the right to do.

And you literally said:

>I personally find that gross and unethical, but that's just my opinion.

legalcorrection··on Microsoft Validation OS
Windows hasn’t had a text mode since Windows 2000. And even before that, the Windows NT text mode only served the purpose of bringing up a system before the graphics drivers were available, and was accordingly bare-bones and mostly unsupported. The GUI is an intrinsic part of the OS, baked into the kernel and core system libraries, not something bolted onto it like on most other operating systems you’re used to. I know it’s hard for *nix people to fully understand, because you think of the command line as the “real” interface to Linux, but on Windows, the real interface is the GUI.

Pre-OSX MacOS was also GUI only, and didn’t even come with any command line interface at all.

legalcorrection··on Pledge() and unveil() in SerenityOS (2020)
Why not just pledge not to exec?
legalcorrection··on U.S. public health agencies aren't ‘following the science,’ officials say
I’m curious. You’ve posted something boneheaded and wrong and been proven so in the responses. Will you issue a mea culpa or will you just quietly crawl away and keep spreading falsehoods in other threads? So often, it’s the latter.
legalcorrection··on Rocky Linux 9.0
Live by the sword, die by the sword. Red Hat can develop a closed-source OS and sue people who copy it, but then no one would use their product. If one of your major selling points is open source, not to mention benefiting from all of the non-RH developed code that is in RHEL, you can't complain about the perfectly predictable consequences of that.
legalcorrection··on I made a Google sheet of local elections and it's been removed from Google Drive
How can any serious business use GSuite with problems like this.
legalcorrection··on My business card runs Linux
Human nature is not infinitely malleable. A video of a woman sucking a dick becoming public will always be humiliating to almost everyone.
legalcorrection··on FTC committed to enforcing law against illegal use, sharing of sensitive data
I think the focus is misplaced. I’d much rather people have my health and location data than my browsing history, which reveals so much more about you.
legalcorrection··on My business card runs Linux
It’s all fun and games until your wife’s nudes or your most private messages are leaked.
legalcorrection··on Responsible stewardship of the UEFI Secure Boot ecosystem
Bad idea because firmware bugs are a growing attack vector and you are leaving yourself exposed to known, easily-exploited vulnerabilities by not staying up to date.
legalcorrection··on The future of innovation has patent-free standards
I don’t see anything unfair in pricing the license as a percentage of revenue or profits. This allows you to capture the actual high value of your invention while also allowing low-value products to benefit from it. After all, that’s what you do if you are both owner of the patent and the products that use it. And a major purpose of the patent system is to allow inventors to benefit from their work without having to themselves enter every industry it might be relevant.
legalcorrection··on Responsible stewardship of the UEFI Secure Boot ecosystem
That only works for IT-managed devices (and even then, is very expensive in terms of labor). Consumer devices need auto-update to protect them from known vulnerabilities. Auto-update is hard to get right, but your product is defective by design if it doesn't support it.
legalcorrection··on Responsible stewardship of the UEFI Secure Boot ecosystem
>the smallest percentage are willing to update firmware

Not commenting on the broader issue, but this attitude has to change. Firmware updates cannot be seen as optional anymore.

Thank you
legalcorrection··on A/B testing gets misused to juice metrics in the short term
Indeed, quantitative data without qualitative understanding is useless. You can't understand data without understanding mechanisms, because there's an infinite number of possible confounding factors that you can only dismiss through your qualitative understanding of the dynamic you are measuring.

Yes, the standard membership covers two people for the base price. Makes circumventing the membership requirement all the more scummy and petty.
legalcorrection··on Assassin’s Creed Liberation delisted, unplayable even to owners starting Sept 1
No, France tried to require the right to resell. That’s not the exact same thing as just requiring that old DRM has to degrade gracefully. I doubt the EU would have overruled that.
legalcorrection··on People from elite backgrounds increasingly dominate academia, data shows
Criteria for becoming an academic:

- Above-average IQ

- Intellectual upbringing

- PhD, i.e. spending five years of your life in your mid to late 20s getting your union card

- During those five years, at least one of: no other mouths to feed, a working spouse, independent wealth, or well-off parents willing to support you

- Willingness to get a PhD for a less than <30% chance of ever getting a tenure-track job (though much higher if you are black or hispanic)

- Left-wing cosmopolitan social and political views

legalcorrection··on Love Song to Costco
I mean using someone else's membership card. Nothing wrong with using services that don't require membership.
