lefrancaiz··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
You're correct. NPR has reported some deaths in vaccinated people in this article. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/04/13/9864114...

>So far, more than 74 million people have gotten fully vaccinated in the United States. It's unclear how many have later gotten infected with the coronavirus anyway. But Michigan, Washington and other states have reported hundreds of cases. Most people have gotten only mildly ill, but some have gotten very sick. Some have even died.

lefrancaiz··on We scaled the GitHub API with a sharded, replicated rate limiter in Redis
>The sharding project bought us some time regarding database capacity, but as we soon found out, there was a huge single point of failure in our infrastructure. All those shards were still using a single Redis. At one point, the outage of that Redis took down all of Shopify, causing a major disruption we later called “Redismageddon”. This taught us an important lesson to avoid any resources that are shared across all of Shopify.

It seems that it does happen sometimes, however.

lefrancaiz··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2020)
BentoBox | Engineering Manager - Production Support Engineer - Principal Engineer | Remote or Onsite | https://getbento.com/careers

Django / DRF / React

BentoBox empowers restaurants to own their presence, profits and relationships. The hospitality platform disrupts third-party services that come between the restaurant and the guest. BentoBox puts the restaurant first and offers tools that drive high-margin revenue directly through the restaurant’s website. BentoBox is trusted and loved by over 5,000 restaurants worldwide including The Meatball Shop, Joseph Leonard, Union Square Hospitality Group, Major Food Group, Rose’s Luxury, Eleven Madison Park & many more.

lefrancaiz··on Our restaurants are failing. Why should food delivery apps thrive?
Yes and no. There are services out there that make it easy for restaurants to have a great online presence, including online ordering (here is an example www.getbento.com). And generally I think restaurant websites have been getting better and better. Restaurant owners are much more aware of the importance of online presence.

That's only half the battle though, food delivery marketplaces like Grubhub are very entrenched and changing consumer behavior back to using the restaurant's website takes time and effort. Marketplaces also spend a ton on marketing to make sure consumers go through them and not directly via the restaurant's website. It's an uphill battle for the restaurants.

lefrancaiz··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2018)
BentoBox | NYC - New York | Onsite

BentoBox helps restaurants not suck on the internet. There's a high probability that you've used one of our sites at one of your favorite restaurants.

We're hiring for a number of engineering positions. From DevOps, Full Stack, to UI.

Our tech stack is mainly React and Django.

lefrancaiz··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
They're still one step away from Square. This is Stripe Terminal and not Stripe POS. This competes more with Square Reader SDK. If I remember correctly Square Reader SDK only launched fairly recently.

Your point is still valid, but I just wanted to point out that building a POS like Square is a different beast.

You can have a professor teach more than one class too. Then your math changes significantly.

BentoBox | Senior Front-End Engineer | New York, NY | www.getbento.co | Full Time

We make a platform to help restaurants with their digital presence.

We're looking for an experienced front end developer (https://angel.co/bentobox/jobs/281979-senior-front-end-engin...).

This is how I described the position in an email to a contact:

We're looking for an expert front end developer who might hopefully also be a talented designer, and can help make our restaurant templates awesome. The ideal person has experience making really great wordpress/shopify/squarespace themes and knows about the challenges involved in making themes/templates for CMSes.

Why does the rocket tipping over cause a loss of hull integrity? Does that mean that it actually exploded, just from going horizontal?
lefrancaiz··on A new Django content management system
Thank you for making all this work available to everyone.
lefrancaiz··on PredictionIO – open source machine learning for predictive features
It also comes with a Vagrant box if you're looking to just try it out with your dev environment. I've tried it personally and had a good experience with it. I spot checked the recommendations and they felt really good.

lefrancaiz··on I Am Stereoblind, But The Oculus Rift Is My Corrective Lens
Interesting. I'm stereoblind as well. I wonder if it would work for me as well. I've had moments during 3d movies where I think i'm seeing 3d, but not sure if it's only due to much larger screen that imax movies are generally shown on. It usually happens on sparks or rain or things that are really flying towards you and i'm wondering if that's similar to what you describe as 'instances where the parallax is very large'.

I may have to get an Oculus rift and try the same demo. It would be really amazing to be able to develop some learning tools for people to retrain the part of the brain responsible for stereovision.

lefrancaiz··on FlameStower - USB charger powered by fire
I recently bought a Biolite. It's a really great product and I love it, but you are right, it isn't the lightest things. I think it's perfect for those shorter trips where weight doesn't matter as much. However, it won't fully replace a good gas/gasoline stove.
lefrancaiz··on Paid for Stripe
Bought a copy. It looks great but keeps crashing for me =(.
lefrancaiz··on Django REST framework 2.3 released: ViewSets and Routers
This is great stuff. The viewsets are about to save me lots of repeated code!
lefrancaiz··on Poll: How do you bill recurring payments?
I think you're taking bootstrapping to an extreme.

You should have at least a little bit of cash to burn (let's say $100 per month) until you get enough users to cover your costs.
