lbcadden3··on Pokémon Go Scans Trained the Navigation Tech for Military Drones
One of the reasons I stopped playing Pokémon GO.

Anyone who checked the origins of the company knew where this was going to go. Your data for sale.

There were already questions about what they were doing with the data of their prior game in the security and privacy space prior to Pokémon.

lbcadden3··on FCC wants to kill burner phones by forcing telecoms to get all customers' IDs
I’m surprised it’s taken this long to go after this.

In the name of “national security” and “protecting the children” and all.

lbcadden3··on Investigation uncovers two sophisticated telecom surveillance campaigns
I’m shocked, shocked I say!
lbcadden3··on A flawed paper in management science has been cited more than 6k times
>There’s a horrible sort of comfort in thinking that whatever you’ve published is already written and can’t be changed. Sometimes this is viewed as a forward-looking stance, but science that can’t be fixed isn’t past science; it’s dead science.

Actually it’s not science at all.

lbcadden3··on Verizon outages reported across U.S.
Phone hasn’t had a connection for hours. 5G wireless home is fine. Upstate South Carolina.
lbcadden3··on FCC abandons efforts to make U.S. broadband fast and affordable
Can’t penalize a company that disappears.
lbcadden3··on FCC abandons efforts to make U.S. broadband fast and affordable
It hasn’t been working anyway.

It was just more corporate welfare.

lbcadden3··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
Not really shocking considering how Japan likes conglomerates.

Hyundai makes cars and military weapons and probably thousands of other things that aren’t even related to each other, don’t know if they still make computers.

lbcadden3··on Where is James Bond? Trapped in an ugly stalemate with Amazon
Actually Games Workshop started that, probably just being accelerated by Amazon.
lbcadden3··on Why the U.S. can't build icebreaking ships
The last polar icebreaker built in a US shipyard occurred in 1969 or earlier.
lbcadden3··on Intel is on life support. Can anything save it?
Being worth less than your assets and liabilities is an extremely dangerous position to be in. The only reason they haven’t been bought and stripped for parts is the fact that the government probably would block it.
lbcadden3··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
She told someone up the management ladder. The business is now financially libel if the situation is not aggressively corrected.

This can also apply to customers, not just co-workers.

Lawyers, good lawyers that know harassment law.

Worked for a company that had to settle a lawsuit before I started there. Management meetings every six months on this the entire 5 years I worked there, part of the settlement.

I have fired a coworker and banned a customer for this.

In US.

lbcadden3··on Netflix replies to Verizon cease and desist letter
Netflix is paying someone for their traffic. Verizon customers are paying for broadband which includes streaming movies.

The ISP need to quit whining. They need to quit trying to get laws passed in every state that keep competition out.

Verizon 2014 1st quarter. $30.8 billion revenue $7.2 billion operating income http://www.verizon.com/investor/news_verizon_reports_fifth_c...

no sympathy

lbcadden3··on How do i bill for open source software?
GPL3, then charge target market for a different license and upgrades/support.

I saw someone else doing this and they said it was working well for them (sorry do not remember who).

lbcadden3··on A black box in your car? Some see a source of tax revenue
I haven't read it yet. So they are going to get rid of the fuel tax right?
lbcadden3··on Little Brother
Good book. Aimed at the young adult audience, I only knew this because when I went to the store to buy a copy it was in the teen section.

I have enjoyed everything by Cory though.

lbcadden3··on Google Chrome security flaw offers unrestricted password access
This is a very very old feature of Chrome. It has been there since I started using Chrome a few years ago.

Must be a slow news day.

lbcadden3··on High-fructose corn syrup prompts considerably more weight gain than sugar (2010)
High-fructose corn syrup and ethanol, with increasing push back against farm subsidies due to tax payers and trade agreements, these are the loopholes used.

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the single biggest change I have made is avoiding products with hfcs, going very well and lost 30 pounds.

lbcadden3··on Why is Ubuntu not Linux and Mint is?
Link to the blog post?

Other than the default packages Ubuntu works very much like Debian to me.

As far as Ubuntu vs Mint its more like Windows 7 vs 8 for me, Ubuntu being 8. I mean with a different interface than most are used to.

lbcadden3··on Upgrading Adobe Flash Player installed Google Toolbar without asking
It seems like Adobe has a random problem that started in August where the page you show in your image had no check box to uncheck if you did not want Chrome installed, may be part of the same issue.

It would install Chrome and/or Chrome Bar depending on what user already had.

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1053973?start=0&tstart=0

I use Chrome on Ubuntu so do not use Adobe Flash. I have had no issues with my wifes Windows system, which only has IE and does have Adobe Flash installed.

lbcadden3··on The Aaron Swartz Prosecution & Plea Bargaining
There staff lawyers are the ones actually writing the legislation.
lbcadden3··on How To Become A Hacker
No reason to link this unless it has been updated.
lbcadden3··on Zynga’s Quest for Big-Spending Whales: 25-50% of revenue from 1% of users
Wonder if it still applies, story is almost 18 months old.
lbcadden3··on Ask HN: A service to process hundreds of checks?
Tellers will simply check the math on the deposit slip, make sure the checks are endorsed, they use a scanner to actually process the checks.

Check with your bank. Many have policies designed to increase revenue and do things like charge you if you use teller more than n times per month.

Why are you only depositing once per month (that is what it sounds like you are doing)?

Are you in the USA?

lbcadden3··on Satellite burns up following SpaceX rocket glitch
You can get insurance for anything if you are willing to pay the premium.
lbcadden3··on Too little, too late: Blockbuster gives up on trying to beat Netflix
Too bad, I used to work for them.

They made some major blunders (No Late Fees), you don't drop 30 to 40% percent of your revenue with no plan to replace it.

Should have launched the mail service much sooner, with 9000 thousand stores and a few mailing centers turn around time on mailings could have been comparable or better than netflix.

Rental kiosk with $ 0.99 rentals where not a problem, the fact that they did not have a Blockbuster logo on them was the problem. I don't even remember how many years it took Blockbuster and NCR to design and build a comparable machine.

When it was obvious that Netflix and Redbox were going to be successful there where still other national and regional video rental changes, I think Blockbuster could have bought both without any problems.

IMO opinion of course. I liked the job, it was fun.

lbcadden3··on Thanks For Reading: 15 Years of News For Nerds
My biggest complaint about /. is through a combination of other sites it takes a half a day or more for stories I'm interested in to hit it, so by the time they are there I have already read them. The comments there add very little to the conversation imo.
lbcadden3··on Why Apple will move away from Intel and towards ARM 64 bit
Maybe.

Based on the current revenue breakdown I think the only reason Apple still makes computers is the margins they get. If they got the margins a lot of other pc makers get they would have killed the computer side already.

lbcadden3··on I’ll Give MongoDB Another Try In Ten Years
It's on the download page.

http://www.mongodb.org/downloads

lbcadden3··on Ask HN: How much would you pay for your Facebook account?
$0.00

I might be willing to pay if I could also control how it looks, maybe.
