laurent92··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
You’ve succeeded to say in the same sentence that the city was doing an appalling job while asking the company to fund their plans, and that it’s the company’s fault for showing the city that they can leave if it keeps worsening.

Maybe Amazon can deal with people fighting against capitalism and the very idea of ownership, but levying taxes to fund a nogo zone (where people get shot), is not a project that Amazon wants to fund?

laurent92··on How To Do Less
z) Customers are gonna complain anyway and ask for more, so better make 80% of the feature and see what they focus on.

z’) If we deliver 20% of the wrong feature, the customers are going to say it and we can reorient before we make the other 50%. #Agile

I’m not very satisfied either but the history of programming is riddled with us building overengineered solution to the wrong problem.

Leave the cart, full, in front of the fridges. They’ll understand soon enough.

I was so happy moving houses because I’ll stop hearing that jingle. I now have the choice between two supermarkets, and I purposedly avoid the old brand because of the jingle, even though the other seems a bit more expensive. It’s driving up sales!

Maybe our FMI didn’t do such a good job at implementing capitalism in Russia. I know the World Bank criticized it a lot for its actions during the 1990 decade, namely Joseph Stieglitz.
laurent92··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
France chose to build in bulk of 5-15 plants, as seen in this (extremely interesting) Gantt diagram: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/24/Chrono-p...
laurent92··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
> unplug their chargers after their phone is charged

To me, that’s a flaw of the charger if it keeps working when no device is connected.

As for TVs and others, we need to mandate a front-facing power switch, because most TVs/devices don’t have one anymore.

The most obvious is that rods naturally fall into water now, which dampens the neutron exchange to a stop, which works automatically in case of power cut (The rest of improvements are about preventing water from overheating and forming H2, and preventing H2 from overpressuring the chambers or exploding, which happened in both Chernobyl and Fukushima).

laurent92··on Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Is Redrawing the Geopolitics of Space - ISS
The ISS was built to prove we could collaborate scientifically across nations despite wars.

Today, Germany has proven they can’t.

laurent92··on Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Is Redrawing the Geopolitics of Space - ISS
Almost everyone would choose freedom over anything else, even if it costs their death. Ukrainians do.

The “let’s turn luminosity to 0 to drive up the sale of screens with 5000000:1 contrast” got me as much as “let’s make the sound inaudible on stereo to drive up the sale of 7.1 sound systems.”

VLC should have a setting such as “flatten sound to 70dB all the time and luminosity to 50% the ability of the display in average”. Even pirated packs are becoming unwatchable.

laurent92··on How to Design Better APIs
+1, each time I return 404 for an object which is not found in the DB, the customer gets a red error message in their UI as if something failed more severely than an object being unavailable, and the metrics believe something is unavailable.

I bit my fingers every time I have mapped HTTP verbs and neither return codes, to REST verbs and codes.

Also, error codes at the API level often need a remapping when used in user context, for example if the OAuth token expires, we don’t say it the same way for an action of the user (then it’s mandatory) than when displaying data passively (in which case it shouldn’t be too red because the user may not care).

laurent92··on Linux Developer Laptops: Dell's Precision 5500 series reigns supreme (2019)
> I did not realize Precision 55xx series is even better built than XPS15

Bought an XPS15 for an intern. I pulled the screen to open, and it remained stuck with the base, because they didn’t even tune the hinge. How can someone work with such a device, you can hear the fans and feel the heat through the keyboard: If XPS15 is in the top 3 money can buy after System76 and Precision 55xx, then Apple can double the prices and they would still have customers.

laurent92··on Why does Google use location for language rather than browser settings?
The trick is results in French are extremely bad quality, tech articles are dumbed down, tutorials in French lose nuance, and, well, good luck finding Hacker News in French. It was a revolution for me when I gained access to the English web, it’s the origin of the documents! I want results in English because the quality is higher in English!

Go live in Europe. Start with a 1-month exchange program in a French family (although I don’t think this is possible for adults). US foods are full of sugar: bread, prepared dishes, I bet even water has added sugar…

laurent92··on A brief reflection on Mac software stagnation
From a back-end position, front-end seems more enjoyable. Then from front-end, everyone still wants to move to be a designer ;)

I have to admit that, after starting my own product, I’ve found my thing (doing features with a bit of backend and a bit of product management…).

laurent92··on Joro spiders likely to spread beyond Georgia
I pruned trees in Kununurra, Northern Australia, and there was a spider in each tree we’d cut (500/day). Harmless or not, they tend to climb once they’re on you, so those of us who are afraid of spiders would just let them climb and shook our hats while proceeding to the next tree. Yes, climb across the face. The leader didn’t bother, so spiders would fight on his hat.

Awesome experience, but a few people harmed during the summer, mostly because of the tools (and one by bees, one by green caterpillars, one by dehydration after going to work by 40°C after a night drinking - so basically all their faults as long as you value yourself). Said boss had prison experience. I tend to believe Gen Y misses the year of military service and tend to replace it with similar experiences, and the gap year in Australia is toughening for the office monkey and the nerds we were. 100% would do it again.

laurent92··on I live in the country with the most expensive Apple products on the planet
When industrial partnerships are broken, there is no incentive to go back. No trust either, neither from the two sides, neither from companies to government not to shut down the transaction again at the first whim.
laurent92··on A brief reflection on Mac software stagnation
You’re so right! Tech has become a job! It takes so much time to build something without bugs and with correct error management, that a new exciting feature is just yet-another-project.

And every new NPM dependency feels like installing a Russian hacker’s “free library” on my computer.

laurent92··on An update on the threat landscape
There were many posts which reached the front page about the war in Ukraine. Although I devoured them with interest, they are off-topic, therefore it’s good that HN doesn’t dwell on it. Other social media became single-topic about the war for a week, HN offers a reprieve by keeping IT and startups at the center.
