langfo··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
The Infinity Machine: Demis Hassabis, DeepMind, and the Quest for Superintelligence by Sebastian Mallaby

I'm halfway through and is quite interesting and enjoyable. behind the scenes documentary view into his life, academic period, pre-DeepMind, forming DeepMind, raising capital, working on various projects like the Atari games, the AlphaGo period (currently immersed in). Definitely recommend

langfo··on Chinese AI Companies Conducting Distillation Campaigns Against U.S. AI Companies [pdf]
Just finished reading "The Great Heist" which details across a number of manufactoring sectors with some wild stories the way China implemented their "Made in China 2025" policy.

langfo··on Ancient, never-before-seen 'earthworks' discovered in the Amazon
Was this shown on Season 2 of the Ancient Apocalypse show on Netflix? Maybe S02E01 Or elsewhere? The deforestation of the Amazon has exposed some of these sites e.g the photo - "The Tequinho geoglyph site in Acre, Brazil"

langfo··on What the World Should Learn from Australia's Social Media Law
What I've learnt so far with having teenage kids in Australia is that parents are stupid. They are still allowing their 12, 13 year old daughters to access apps such as TikTok and Snapchat. Just because their other school friends are on it.
langfo··on China's EV Revolution [video] – Foreign Correspondent
Across the country, electric cars Australians might consider to be luxury items are now standard issue vehicles in China. Massage seats, big screens and even fridges are the minimum requirement for Chinese EV drivers and with charging stations at shopping centres that can recharge a battery in under 5 minutes, there’s no such thing as range anxiety.

langfo··on Ask HN: As an Australian, is it possible to get a remote US role?
Yes, Google has an office in Australia so do all the big US companies like Microsoft, AirBnB etc. As I mentioned below Anduril have a new operation in Sydney as Australia's submarine capability is f@#ked and needs something ASAP
langfo··on Ask HN: As an Australian, is it possible to get a remote US role?
G'Day from Sydney

Anduril have setup shop in Sydney. Anything of interest there?

Westbury Partners if you are into high frequency trading. They pay a shit tonne (seemed to have stopped displaying the eye watering salaries)

langfo··on Best 2000W Electric Bikes for Adults (2026): 40MPH+ Picks
My god! I can only imagine the carnage which would occur around my locale if those bikes were everywhere! But very impressive and tempting to put an order in
langfo··on Training for the final decade of life with Dr. Peter Attia [video]
We're all going to die young in Australia as 60 minutes / Youtube doesn't allow us access to this video

In all seriousness. I like Dr Peter Attia's approach / style when a guest on other people's podcast. Keeps it simple enough and to the point

langfo··on Ask HN: What books are you reading now?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_Shrugged

I came across it from a post/comments on Twitter and people were proposing that a character from the book resembles one of our current Billionaires who does car, space, social media things among others.

I thought in Australia all we had to do was open a tobacco shop, put in a self loading cash ATM and off you go.
langfo··on Atlassian founder: Australia could be major data hub for South-East Asia

langfo··on Finding a Job: Build Something Real
I started as an apprentice electrician at 16 years old way back in the late 1980's for a large company. I believe the reason I was successfully offered the apprenticeship was due to bringing to the interview my completed and working LED VU meter Dick Smith electronic kit (big in Australia at the time). It was something real they could hold and look over. I remember them spending a fair amount of time looking over my soldering, cutting of component legs and wiring. Then asking a few basic electronics questions. Something real pre-internet to stand out from the crowd :-)

langfo··on Why don't more people use Linux?
I've used Linux for many years in my work environment but rarely at home. I recently installed Mint on a 15+ year old Dell. It is our only device with a DVD and this week my wife asked if I could rip an old home movie DVD. I googled a DVD ripper for Linux. I found Handbrake and with the Minute software manager application it installed seamlessly. I ran the software, stuck the DVD and within 30 minutes, the 2 hour movie had been saved to an mp4 file. Very impressed!!
langfo··on Ask HN: How do you find a new book to read?
Recommendations from people I follow on Twitter. Interviews from people on traditional TV promoting their book. Also, I can't count how many times from just strolling through the local library I've picked up a book which has caught my eye, borrowed it and thorougly enjoyed the book. langfo··on Australia headed toward cashless society
Everyone is using Mastercard, Visa etc. It is not obvious most of the time but numerous places add a merchant fee without you knowing. The $4.50 coffee you purchase costs more as they place a 1% (?) fee on top of the price. Also, when I do need cash, I am finding it harder and harder to find a bank ATM as the banks are closing branches everywhere. The 3rd party ATM's are everywhere but you get stung with a $2 fee (at a minimum).
