The idea that the aliens could modify protons to become super-powerful supercomputers that could manipulate matter in basically arbitrary ways (and then use this to mess psychologically with individual humans) really violates my idea of good science fiction. There should be a coherent science model behind how things work in-universe and if the universe is basically supposed to be ours the science should basically be ours as well, possibly with some tweaks or extensions. That storyline just doesn't go for me.When there was all the discussion about the 'shooter and the farmer' hypothesis I was convinced the sci-fi explanation coming was that the protagonist's world was really a simulation; the demonstrations violating physics then would be explained by someone having control outside the simulation. The lesson of the shooter and farmer stories is that empirical induction (like understanding the physics of our world via scienctific experiment) would give incorrect results if there was an outside power manipulating the results (in my anticipated storyline, the simulation). But instead the book went its own frustrating direction tht didn't tie with the shooter and farmer stories.
Character development was also crap. All characters seemed flat.
The core idea though seemed interesting and it answers the Fermi paradox.
