lanamo··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
same! will stay on Sequoia. Liquid Glass is so ugly
lanamo··on De-Brainrot Vacations
Walter Benjamin basically predicted this in The Storyteller (1936) — nearly a century before smartphones:

> "If sleep is the apogee of physical relaxation, boredom is the apogee of mental relaxation. Boredom is the dream bird that hatches the egg of experience. A rustling in the leaves drives him away."

lanamo··on Orion Browser by Kagi
+1 - using Orion on iOS & MacOs for a few years and i like it!
lanamo··on Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books?
Or you could say in other words: Everything is a remix!

Dale Carnegie and Steven Covey have both been heavily influenced by Alfred Adler, the Austrian psychotherapist and founder of individual psychology.

lanamo··on Being Muslim in Japan
Halal food does not belong to Japan, and it is very cruel. > "I realized that educating the people around me was going to be a permanent part of my life here" The entitlement and arrogant ignorance is really strong. As a German who left Germany long time ago, I really hope Japan stays Japanese. When I visit, it feels like a full system restore for me — the social harmony, the deep consideration for others, the quiet competence. It’s one of the last places that still feels good and is quiet. It’s simple systems thinking: Japan’s high-trust culture works.

Japan is trying to protect it: comprehensive surveillance of mosques and Islamic-related organisations in Japan includes profiling, cameras, undercover agents, informants, and the collection of personal data. It began shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, became public through a leak in 2010, and the Supreme Court declared it legal in 2016 (stating it was "necessary and unavoidable" for counter-terrorism).

Japan is nice because it is Japanese. And now I'm probably going to loose my hard-earned 46 karma points here on HN. ;-) worth it.

lanamo··on Talking to strangers at the gym
also interesting: Dale Carnegie admired Alfred Adler, the Austrian psychologist; Adler said “the solution to the world’s present problems lies in social interest: concerned relationships between people and groups”. Adler never rose to fame (in the west) - but he also didn't care about it. the book "The Courage to Be Disliked" is about Alfred Adler.
lanamo··on Leadership is a hell of a drug
You must refer to the author David Whyte :) his narration voice is fantastic as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IygDX7Vdql0
lanamo··on What It's Like to Be a Bee
here is a lecture (on Zoom) from Prof. Chittka about the very same topic as the article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSaqi2ysDoA
lanamo··on Telling the Bees
i keep Asian honeybees on Lantau Island / Hong Kong - fully agree with you, there is so much more to it the more time one spends with bees. you will like this book a lot [Song of Increase]: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/28862364
lanamo··on Four thousand weeks
John Wick here. please be nice. you probably never had a dog - i hope you will one day and experience the joy of such a companionship.
lanamo··on MuscleWiki: Find exercises that work specific muscles
"insist" is a bit harsh; we're all trying to help here ;-) https://xkcd.com/386/
lanamo··on MuscleWiki: Find exercises that work specific muscles
if you start tracking reps and weight, i guarantee you will loose interest fast. while tracking might certainly be useful for muscle building, gmb.io has a different approach and focuses on movements that are safe and help you in real life (mobilise wrist / shoulders, prevent back pain improve posture etc). A lot can be done without fancy equipment.
lanamo··on MuscleWiki: Find exercises that work specific muscles
+1 for gmb.io - it's the only program(s) that i ever paid for - they are that clever. (i am athletic, walk my dog daily, have access to crossfit gyms etc). gmb.io "fills the gaps" of daily movement deficits and is for everyone.
lanamo··on We Live in the Age of the Bullshitter
We have three levels of "bullshit":

1. The liar: The insidious lie fulfills this criterion, because the liar wants to deceive and is sure of success. 2. The bullshitter: thinks "What I'm saying could be wrong? So what?" 3. The idiot: thinks, however, "What I say could also be wrong? It'll be true!" The idiot just talks like that, or he heard something and passed it on unchecked.

In digital media, bullshitters and idiots - as opposed to liars - are both perpetrators and victims.

All three (liars, bullshitters, idiots) sometimes accidentally tell the truth. But because it is always easier to miss the truth than to meet it, in most cases they increase bullshit of all kinds and thus act at the expense of the truth.

Bullshit only spreads on the internet if many people forward it. If we were all attentive, critical and informed, then this phenomenon would not exist.

lanamo··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
+1 for Exhalation by Ted Chiang. And also: "Sum - Forty Tales from the afterlives" by David Eagleman. A small book that makes you think very very deeply.
lanamo··on Memento mori
One of my most used phone apps is WeCroak https://www.wecroak.com/

Reminds me several times a day of the impermanence of life and of death, with a thoughtful quote. It is a buddhist thing. It somehow makes your everyday world a little easier.

The last quote of the app i took a screenshot of was: "Having no destination, i am never lost." [Ikkyū]

lanamo··on Snap launches its first drone
drones make unwanted noise and ruin the atmosphere of natural settings. does the world need your boring selfies from an aerial perspective? No. absolutely not. Only worse than these snapchat plastic teeny drones would a V2 with built-in flood light, for added light-pollution. Let's spoil star-gazing, too! I feel the sudden urge to pick up a book about falconry...
lanamo··on Shanghai video overwhelms Chinese censor, gets 400M views
fellow HK gweilo here - me too would have gone full John Wick mode! it is impressive to witness such a mass psychosis, but if you touch my dog, then...
lanamo··on New York is using cameras with microphones to ticket loud cars
this is a case for John Wick.
lanamo··on Google Search Is Dying
xSearch for Safari makes the search experience on the Apple ecosystem much better. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/xsearch-for-safari/id157990206... Makes switching search engines easy and you can use "bangs" like in DuckDuckGo to use other search engines within safari.
lanamo··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
I am using MELA https://mela.recipes - also being frustrated with recipes and the amount of unnecessary blabla, this app is awesome. it de-clutters recipes, has a cooking mode (shows you step by step) and a grocery shopping function. It is the same developer as the awesome Reeder RSS app. Very nice design as well. Check it out and happy cooking!
lanamo··on Ask HN: How do you sustain mindfulness throughout your day?
whenever you transition from one activity to another, be aware of what you are doing in exactly this moment. that’s it.
lanamo··on Ask HN: Advice about aging parents
My dad is 81, bricklayer by trade and had his own small construction business, he worked 6 days a week. The physical strength certainly helped him for a good while into his old age, but walking is becoming increasingly difficult (now using a walking stick, very slow). He also fell twice in the last few years.

In my research i found this clever stair-lift solution https://assistep.com It's mechanical, and helps prevent falling, also encourages to further "workout" and contnue to walk up and down by himself. I contacted this company to see how expensive it is - definitely way more affordable than a chairlift and a more "active" solution.

But here is the bummer: He doesn't want it. Too stuborn, and just turns me down.

lanamo··on Trackers: The Sound of 16-Bit [video]
addendum: You can run this M8 Tracker as a "headless" version with a Teensy 4.1 on your computer. https://github.com/Dirtywave/M8HeadlessFirmware (might be a good option for tracker fans since this hardware is really "hard to get" at the moment.) M8 Tracker seems like a perfect device. In the meantime, you can try the above DIY version and practice with that.
lanamo··on Trackers: The Sound of 16-Bit [video]
Trackers are making a comeback: check out M8 Tracker, a fantastic hardware device, celebrated by the music making community. https://dirtywave.com (it's in very high demand and sold out quickly every time a new batch is available)
