Manufacturers treating users as stupid is the problem. USB-C is only one aspect.
If you look at specs from Apple, Nintendo and random-knock of brands from aliba.com, you will see that they only mention the ports. nothing else. Apple will sometime use a vague spec, like the wattage.
Now look at USB-C specs from HP and other more reputable sources. They will specify all the PD profiles, which thunderbolt version is supported, how many lanes, etc.
The same happens with WiFi devices. You will be lucky if lesser brands even mention the protocol, let alone antennae and MIMO details!
Same can be said of Bluetooth (from cars to headsets!) which will not say if they implement a specific profile or not, but will plaster "BLUETOOTH 5.0" on the box.
The irony, is that consumers see Apple and other offenders as having better products. Just look at this thread on how the very top voted comment is someone glad that it is convenient, even though the first reply to it is trying to explain how they can fry their devices, only to be replied by someone saying "i don't care, it worked fine with the one charger i tried".
Just like the web (W3C?) was a front for microsoft taking over from Netscape, and now Google taking over from everyone else, the linux foundation et al are just fronts for Google et al to have whatever they want on the kernel and to prevent any and all GPL3 "corruption" of their take-take-take business practices.
GNU/Linux is old news, everyone runs BIGCORP/Linux today. You probably have more code from Google/Amazon/etc than GNU in any modern distro.
Just look at all the effort devoted to systemd (which is a blatant copy of oracle/windows service management) or everyone eating up the hype of zsh on macs (which is nothing but a spin from apple: Look how this new shell is so much better, oh bash is going to be GPLv3, no this has nothing to do with it, look how shiny is zsh!)
GPLv3 will set you free!
Can't the EFF and ACLU team up on this?
Because it is a well paid campaign by some big shadow super PAC.
Anything else is controlled opposition, probably planted by the same shadow super PAC. Including this article, which ends promoting "effective yet non-repressive ways of regulating major tech platforms". Riiiigth. That is clearly not a pushed agenda on itself on the same level as gun rights.
\* microsoft is well known for it, but Google does it a lot too.
Microsoft is selling you into the IDE, in small portions. This is similar to the IBM approach with JAVA last decade(s?).
You install a "text editor" for simple things, like code completion. Before you realize you don't even know which compiler you are using or where it came from. You just press F5 and look at convenient break points. And somehow it only runs right on Azure :) the last one is a joke (for now?)
As a language popularity grows, it approaches the Java curve. Just like nobody who uses `npm` like (or know) maven, nobody using VS Code know about the old java IDEs, and how they become todays Java IDEs. Or how the React monolith is the same as the Java Monolith.
I guess people mixing up java and javascript in the 90s... just thad more, long term vision?
* Looks around. See the entire Gaming market and Apple dongles.
Yeah. spot on.
I've played VI 6 after it was free on Epic store.
It is the worst game experience i have ever had!
You can play in full 3D (lame as hell) map, or strategic (2d map). Both of them give you a really bad view of the map, no matter what.
The UI is full of bugs and things you need to click twice, and full of pitfalls (pressed space but an event was just jumping on the screen? too bad now your worker just moved next to that barbarian and will be lost next turn)
The graphics completely destroy your GPU even though it is a freaking Civ game! no matter if you play on 2D view, your GPU will smoke just the same. no idea how they screwed that up.
Then, even without considering graphics performance, my i5 top of the line was taking a whole 30s between unit moves in the later rounds of the game, and a full 3+ minutes for the CPU players turns.
Avoid that game like the plague! unless you have a multi thousand dollars gaming PC. then just play it to laugh at all the times Gandhi will declare war on you on first contact.
Edit: oh and i tried to play on the Surface. Despite being impossible because of performance, the UI is unusable without mouse over, and there's no way to show the mouse overs windows with the touch mode. Complete disaster of a game. I'd be ashamed to have my name on the credits.
edit 2: I actually had lots of fun with https://github.com/yairm210/Unciv on the surface.
and for newcomers to the series, play the original ones or even the Nes one on an emulator.
great content too.
Make adblock be a first class feature that you enabled/whitelist in the main browser option screen.
that's what Intel said!
sorry. i will see myself out...
the glob stuff is a case of power vs convenience. but you can do very similar with bash [] or {} syntax.
not being apologist, but I like unix approach of blurring the lines of a computer user and programmer. It makes everyone up their game both ways. Users being more demanding, and code being more accessible.
alias copy_files_from_one_place_to_another=cp
this tells me short names aren't a problem to begin with. And everyone would have the same discoverability problems with longer ones.
literally copy/pasted from wikipedia:
> A probability is a way of assigning every event a value between zero and one,
when something so bad and rare is used as scapegoat for so many unrelated things as part of a fascist power grab, that everyone rather run away than to report when the actual crime happens to the authorities?
makes you wonder how much all the 'think of the children' knee jerk legislation actually helps anyone, besides the politicians
