lake_vincent··on Why Don't Rich People Just Stop Working?
The answer is always classes, folks. Because once you become a millionaire for the first time, you leave the middle class and realize that you are actually quite poor amongst the millionaire class, so you have to keep working to climb through the ranks of millionaires. It's a recursive algorithm, you see.
lake_vincent··on Visually stunning math concepts which are easy to explain
I think it's basically just arguing semantics. Been a math teacher my whole career, and it's quite plain to me that some kids simply learn better as soon as you draw a picture, and others simply don't. Not sure why it has to be a whole debate.
lake_vincent··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
"capitalism should sort it out"

Oh, you sweet summer child!

lake_vincent··on Why does NBC make it so difficult to watch the Olympics?
Agreed - just log into app via cable provider and voila, Olympic paradise.
lake_vincent··on Why is standing more tiring than walking? [audio]
This is very interesting. I have plantar fasciitis, and I've gotten to the point where walking long distances isn't painful anymore, but standing in one place for a long time is still agony. Seems counterintuitive, but now it makes a little more sense.

Long line at the grocery store? No thank you - I'll come back later.

lake_vincent··on Michael Burry warns the 'mother of all crashes' is coming
Yeah, but at least he puts his money where his mouth is. His fund has huge puts on treasuries, and calls on food staples. Not just a PR move, his investments actually reflect his prediction.
lake_vincent··on Purism and Linux 5.11
I keep eyeing the Librem 5, but just can't shake the feeling that it would be a massive inconvenience to leave the android/iphone ecosystem at this point in tech history, monopolies and virtualization notwithstanding.

Anyone have feedback on how it fares as a daily use smartphone for your tech savvy lay person?

lake_vincent··on SolarWinds hack was 'largest and most sophisticated attack' ever: MSFT president
This 1000%

WE are the weakest link! The most technically secure system would be nearly unusable by humans without enormous inconvenience. So long as software systems are built by humans, for humans, they will always be vulnerable at the interface.

lake_vincent··on The Mayron Cole Piano Method is now free
Gatekeeping????? That's the most absurd use of that word I've ever seen. It's a hobby. Hobbies cost money. People don't have the god-given right to play piano, just like they don't have the god-given right to fly a plane. Pianos cost money. Pianists need money to make a living. It's not gatekeeping, it's just the plain economics of a highly complex musical instrument.
lake_vincent··on Create your own smart baby monitor with a RaspberryPi and TensorFlow
Was going to come here to say something very similar. I'm no luddite, but some things really shouldn't be left to tech like this...
lake_vincent··on The Warby Parker clones are imploding
Have you ever seen a Casper mattress?? Everything you say is provably false. Casper mattresses have a few layers of different types of foam, all packaged together in a nice fabric outer layer. If you've ever seen one, they are clearly a non-trivial construction.

It's most definitely not as simple as "cut them, and roll them for shipment."

lake_vincent··on A rectal surgeon says bidets are way healthier than toilet paper
The fact that the source is literally INSIDER.com really isn't helping the situation either
lake_vincent··on Quantum Supremacy Using a Programmable Superconducting Processor
I wouldn't say "emulate", because a classical computer wouldn't be trying to solve it the same way as the quantum computer. The point (which would be amazing if true) is that a classical supercomputer would take 10,000 years to solve the same problem, no matter what method/algorithm it used.
lake_vincent··on Alan Lomax and the Search for the Origins of Music
Gonna take this opportunity to plug one of my favorite albums of recent years, Jayme Stone's Lomax Project https://open.spotify.com/album/0nfUQ0fq6JXOv8EyUGRgUY?si=ggw...

It's a collection of professionally arranged renditions of songs from Alan Lomax's archive. Brilliant project and album.

lake_vincent··on YouTube engineer in critical condition after rampage during bad LSD trip
Agreed. Pure LSD is extremely rare nowadays, so the odds of it being something more nefarious are relatively high.
lake_vincent··on Amazon confirms it keeps your Alexa recordings basically forever
Not to be facetious, but why exactly do you trust Apple to delete your data after some time? What has Apple done or said to earn your trust? Genuinely curious.
lake_vincent··on Spark of genius: Zapping the brain improves creativity?
Can't wait for this to catch on as the next big "biohack" amongst silicon valley tech bros. The apotheosis of which will be a ketogenic, microdosing, intermittent fasting, pranayama breathing, Zen yogi brain zapper.
