lajosbacs··on SEC Charges Samuel Bankman-Fried with Defrauding Investors in FTX [pdf]
Not defending Sequoia, but I'm pretty sure that they have lost their money as well -- private equity always invests along with their investors.
lajosbacs··on SEC Charges Samuel Bankman-Fried with Defrauding Investors in FTX [pdf]
I hope that swiftness of these charges will slightly diminish all these voices that keep repeating everywhere that 'the man' is on it with him, that the media defend him etc.
lajosbacs··on The Legasov Tapes (2019)
TIL, Wikipedia confirms this.
lajosbacs··on The Legasov Tapes (2019)
They only admitted that Chernobyl happened when elevated levels of radioactivity were detected by other countries and you could not hide it anymore.

That was not the case of this lake and the related Mayak plant disaster -- world learned about it only when the Soviet authorities said that they have previous cleanup exp during the Chernobyl disaster.

lajosbacs··on Ask HN: How do you protect your eyes while coding for long hours?
You're very good.

No, I have not seen your post. I was coding away and genuinely was thinking about my eyesight and started adjusting my ambient lightning. Then I realized that I actually have no idea what I'm doing, so I have decided to write an Ask HN.

I wrote the title but was too lazy to find good wording of the subtitle (is one needed anyway?), so I had it generated with GPT3. I adjusted it by deleting one sentence.

lajosbacs··on Ask HN: How do you protect your eyes while coding for long hours?
I had this realization while in snowy mountains. All is white and suddenly I thought that I had a lock of hair in my line of sight.
lajosbacs··on Ask HN: How do you protect your eyes while coding for long hours?
My case exactly! Also mid 30's and I also have floaters unfortunately and according to my trustful ophtalmologist, there is little to be done about it.

It is not that I have a problem per se, but this condition made me realize that my eyesight won't get any better and since I depend on it for a living, well.

lajosbacs··on Getting Started with Tmux
Also been doing this for years. And always wondered about possible disadvantages, or is there any reason why it is not used like this by everyone?
lajosbacs··on Getting Started with Tmux
Does someone know about a way to get autocomplete into tmux? Something like iterm2 has
lajosbacs··on Tesla calls self-driving technology 'failure,' not fraud
As a former Tesla owner (one year ago), their claims are just ridiculous. How can Tesla talk about FSD, when they cannot resolve even simple cruise control on a street that is not a highway with a separator. More like FFS than FSD
lajosbacs··on North Korea – teenagers executed for distributing South Korean movies
Yes, they can do that but cannot stay, the collateral being their family in NK.
lajosbacs··on North Korea – teenagers executed for distributing South Korean movies
For me, the only metric is: can people leave from there? People cannot leave North Korea, ergo it sucks.
lajosbacs··on Hertz to pay $168M to customers arrested due to Hertz’s false police reports
On one hand, I admire the US system where a class lawsuit can punish even the largest corporations, like here.

On the other hand, I am terrified to travel there fearing something like this will happen and I will rot in jail for some Kafkaesque mistake.

lajosbacs··on Mandatory helmet laws make cyclists less safe
I wear a helmet, laws or not. But when I occasionally don't, I notice that I am way more careful, e.g. more mindful of a curb with a metal post that I ride by.

I wonder if this effect is permanent, if I would stop wearing a helmet forever.

lajosbacs··on Stack Overflow questions are being flooded with answers from ChatGPT
I have not used SO since I've started using ChatGPT, it is so much easier to get to the correct answer and it can even be tailored to my specific example.

So double whammy for SO which makes me feel really sad.

lajosbacs··on Iran abolishes morality police
That's what I mean, who cares about moral ground when one's own security is on the plate. See how quickly Finland and Sweden dropped their support of Kurds when it was obstructing (via Turkey) their NATO ascension. Even the Kurds have to understand this.

I also only give to charity when I'm not broke. Not everyone is Mother Theresa all the time and that should be OK. It's not 0 or 1.

lajosbacs··on Iran abolishes morality police
I meant that we need to buy our oil somewhere, for now. And unlike Russia they are far away and not an imminent danger. So better be friends with them, even though we don't like it.
lajosbacs··on Iran abolishes morality police
Ok, I see and accept your point.

But still after your clarification, I see nothing wrong with west cheering the revolution. a) It is our side b) It is impossible to enforce 'not cheering', one slip is enough to be used against you, see Musk and Russian propaganda.

And regarding the Gulf states, I also do not like this. But one has to pick his battles and better (for us) getting our oil from them than from Russia.

lajosbacs··on Iran abolishes morality police
The 'West' might support the protesters, sure, but the effort is still negligible to the will of Iranians. What I read in your comment is that the ppl of Iran have no agency, all is just conflict between the 'West' and whatever. I just find this stance incredibly patronising. One hears the same thing on Ukraine (from Chomsky, for example).
lajosbacs··on Iran abolishes morality police
As nntaleb postulates, once a dictatorship starts giving concessions, it is on its last legs.

Therefore I do not believe this news.

lajosbacs··on FTX’s collapse was a crime, not an accident
I don't get this obsession with mainstream 'the man' controlling the narrative. For example the FT slams him so much it's boring. They even have a (great) data driven article about how he sucked at LoL.
lajosbacs··on Keyboard Latency (2017)
This comes up every other day (along with https://danluu.com/input-lag/ ) and rightfully so.

We need to be reminded of this as long as car and other companies sell stuff like this with a straight face https://youtu.be/bpclpbDmHsw?t=361 .

lajosbacs··on Ask HN: Alternatives to The Economist?
I'd vote for FT from your list. It is worth it just for Janan Ganesh's columns, the rest is just a bonus.
lajosbacs··on Goodbye, data science
This especially sucks if you are the middle manager. You know that what you are asked to do is a complete BS but you have to somehow communicate it to you underlings (who see through the BS) without using sarcasm or snarky remarks.
lajosbacs··on Goodbye, data science
I too am critical of data science, but I think that this is a bit unfair. The scientific part could be called just 'statistics'.
lajosbacs··on Goodbye, data science
I've been a 'data scientist' for years, and I probably will be again at some point as it is the biggest item in my CV. It was in a company, where data science was not the bread and butter, but just something extra to show to the clients.

For me therefore, data science is the epitome of Graber's 'bullshit job' -- if the position didn't exist, the company would go on just the same.

lajosbacs··on The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers
The important thing is also that you do not have to breath the fumes in the city. This applies well to EVs -- they might more polluting (all in) in the first years then ICEs, but the pollution does not happen where you live.
lajosbacs··on NopeCHA: Captcha Solver
I doo this too, simply because I get angry when a multibillion company asks me to work for free for them.

edit: I get twice as angry when I have to fill in captcha in a service that I pay for.

lajosbacs··on The world of pipe fittings
I also found the UK vids amusing (am not a Pole) -- kind of how to make fun of a stereotype in a positive way.
lajosbacs··on The world of pipe fittings
It's a stereotype across the whole Europe, even Poland takes advantage of it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_plumber#/media/File:Pol...
