lajosbacs··on YouTube No Translation
Yes! It is inconsistent, you think that finally reason prevailed and they nuked the 'feature', but then it appears randomly again.
lajosbacs··on YouTube No Translation
I know, but on the other hand you have many Swiss who, when spoken to in perfect Hochdeutsch, prefer to reply in English. No way you're gonna win over these people with autotranslate to what they consider a 'foreign' language.
lajosbacs··on YouTube No Translation
Adding to my previous comment, in Switzerland, people speak very specific Swiss German, yet the videos are autodubbed to 'hoch' (standard) German.

It's a bit of an exaggeration, but it is as if a person is Lisbon would get their videos dubbed to Spanish.

lajosbacs··on YouTube No Translation
It is insane to me that you cannot turn it off in the setting even as a premium user. Or better yet, make this opt-in for everyone.

I live in a German speaking country, yet my native language is other and German is almost never preferred when I watch some content. All my UIs are in English.

Yet, I open a video by a Brit and he is autodubbed to German. There really isn't any similar UX decision by any other reputed company that would be comparably stupid as this. Google even has large presence in Switzerland, that makes it even more puzzling.

lajosbacs··on Ask HN: iCloud hide my email / Gmail issues
I don't even see any inofficial statements, which is puzzling, this must touch a huge amount of users.
lajosbacs··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
Let's not forget defaulting the audio to an automatic translation. That is so dumb that I still a have hard time believing that there is not an option to disable this. They don't even get any ad revenue out of this, it is just idiotic.
lajosbacs··on Europe's most wanted man plotted my murder and that of my colleague
This is so well put, I have much admiration for Germans, but they just feel so gullible.
lajosbacs··on The correct amount of ads is zero
Agree fully. I got livid when traveling in a business class long haul flight with the Lufthansa Group, and was forced to watch ads on the screen in front of me. No option to turn the screen of (which was later enabled, during the flight).

It's several years and I still remember this.

lajosbacs··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
This is every other ATM in Prague (euronet is the name I think), they helpfully convert it for you with like 30% markup. These people (and the lawmarkers that permit this) should be publicly flogged.
lajosbacs··on Noam Chomsky 'no longer able to talk' after 'medical event'
* actually deleted my reply, a non-troll cannot say this
lajosbacs··on Noam Chomsky 'no longer able to talk' after 'medical event'
What would then be a good example of socialism?
lajosbacs··on Noam Chomsky 'no longer able to talk' after 'medical event'
To contrast a bit with other comments, he is very much disliked in eastern Europe. He was always pushing his multipolar worldview and not respecting that the Poles, Czechs etc. do not want to live under the Soviet/Russian 'pole'.

My personal opinion is that he 1) hates the US 2) hates eastern Europe because it defeated socialism.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I do not think I will be.

lajosbacs··on User read the manual, followed instructions, still couldn't make 'Excel' work
Of course it is a nice prank, but best 15 minutes?
lajosbacs··on Alexei Navalny's lawyers are arrested
Same for me. I realize that he is also pro-imperialism and would probably be worse for Europe than Putin (Russia would be more efficient)

But him facing jail with an upright stance shows a lot of skin in the game, you cannot ignore that.

lajosbacs··on Why Kundera never went home
I'm pretty sure he means Slovakia. Not sure about any minister, but the policemen is true and there was the Kovac case -- maybe not minister, but president's son.
lajosbacs··on Why Kundera never went home
Replying here bc max comment depth.

Absolutely not, boffinAudio, the other way around! It was you who brought US into this discussion, I did not. I am a citizen of a former satelite country of the Soviet Union and I do not want this situation repeated. But some people do not understand that you can hate being a Russian/Soviet subject (as the Polish, Czech...) without having to love the US.

And FYI, part of my family is from South America and I am well aware of the anti US sentiment there and understand its reasons. But it just bears no relevance on what Russia did in Central and Eastern Europe. It's still the same story -- country A attacks country B, but you say. Yes, but country C did this to country D before! So country A has right to do it. Bad luck country B!

lajosbacs··on Why Kundera never went home
wow

But ok, I'll give you that -- I prefer a unipolar world with US hegemony or whatnot rather than a multipolar world where I have to live in the Russian part (which by the way absolutely never respected the nations that it had subjugated, convince me that I'm wrong).

lajosbacs··on Why Kundera never went home
Fair enough.

Of course, that is a completely legit view that I also partly hold. However, this author is known for his looking up to a regime that is way worse (or 'not better form' as you say).

lajosbacs··on Why Kundera never went home
No, it is a hidden way of saying that small countries have no choice of their own and they have to belong to some pole. And as luck would have it, the closest pole to central Europe would be Russia! How can someone not want that?
lajosbacs··on Why Kundera never went home
Did not say this article in particular, but its author. Other commenters posted links. But basically he is pushing the Russian whataboutist narrative.
lajosbacs··on Why Kundera never went home
The author hates the post-totalitarian system of the Czech Republic ('89-) and has very pro-Russian views. Just be aware before wasting your time with his article.
lajosbacs··on Get a Tesla if you want to learn about AI trying to kill you, says Steve Wozniak
I disagree on the cruise control, especially in Europe where the streets are narrower, it constantly thinks that it will crash and applies brakes. I sold my Tesla because of this
lajosbacs··on Russia is persecuting dissenters by taking away their children
And it takes generations to forget. I spent only my infancy under communism, but through my parents this is ingrained in me. I am always very careful to voice my opinion and I care too much about what unknown ppl would think about me. Criminal regime
lajosbacs··on Toblerone to change design under ‘Swissness’ rules
Yes, the regional products in Europe for sure. But a whole country and all products? I can imagine that Japan would do something like this, as it is usually synonymous with quality (as Swiss is) and they do not want brand dilution.
lajosbacs··on Toblerone to change design under ‘Swissness’ rules
I once at party spoke with a Swiss lawyer that focuses on these infringements. He told me: 'If you label something as "Swiss" and a certain percentage is not actually made here, you will eventually get a letter from me'. I wonder whether there is another country that takes this as seriously as Switzerland.
lajosbacs··on A command line tool that draw plots on the terminal
Didn't know it can do that (in iterm2 works nicely).

My favourite use of gnuplot, over ssh, is to plot ascii, just like the presented tool does. Just use

  set terminal dumb size `tput cols` `tput lines`
lajosbacs··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
I have an older BMW with ACC and had a Tesla Model 3 as well. The ACC on the BMW rocks, it reacts quicker than I do when a car slows in front of me, but never vigorously breaks. Phantom breaking is unheard of. It only needs attention when the car in front leaves the highway and starts slowing down. But the manual specifically addresses this.

On the other hand, I found the dumbest 'cruise control' mode on T3 downright dangerous, you always had to have foot on the gas to be ready to override it. They just took something that was solved a long time ago and made it worse, I really do not get it.
