lai-yin··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
Birds and little critters to be relocated to affordable housing in San Marcos.

But seriously why can't we just start building more net-zero natural gas plants that take up 1/100 of the land area? This is insane.

lai-yin··on Ask HN: What probiotic supplements do you use?
Never heard of that song! Sounds awful.
lai-yin··on How a Book Is Made – Ink, Paper and a 200k-Pound Printer
My aunt, recently retired from the printing industry, has regaled me with many tales of the intricacies and complications she went through to print everything from Harry Potter to Jocko Willink. Kindles were also banned from entering her home.
lai-yin··on Ask HN: What can we do after a giant impact event
That's a good human survival play book. But what are we capable of now to clean the planet after a quadrillion tons of ash and fire hits our atmosphere.
lai-yin··on Ask HN: What can we do after a giant impact event
Absolutely agree with this point! You also raised another interesting idea - since we don't know when a giant impact or similar catastrophic event will occur, we can't categorize it as a near-term risk or long-term risk. It could happen anytime within the near to long range. How are risks on that broad time scale defined?
lai-yin··on Impacts of lack of sleep
I understand this won't sit well with a lot of people, but reading a chapter or two of the Bible before bed totally resets my mind and helps me fall asleep almost immediately when I am ready. It calls you to a different realm. Especially the historical books like Judges, Samuel, and Kings.
lai-yin··on Aranese: Spain's little-known language
When I walked the Camino de Santiago (Catholic pilgrimage across Spain) there was one segment near the Pyrenees where lots of aggressive graffiti seemed to warn that "you are in Basque country now!"
lai-yin··on Ben Stiller’s New Series Is a Sci-Fi Take on Office Space
The soundtrack, amnesia mysteries, with hint of sci-fi make me long for Mr Robot.

I think you mean, reverse engineering to create new, better machines: good. Reverse engineering to game a medical testing device: bad.
lai-yin··on Why Bitcoin is worse than a Madoff-style Ponzi scheme
Oil and natural gas have lifted billions of people out of generational poverty. It wouldn't be possible for you to type that comment on your computer or laptop and post it to Hacker News without their existence.

When I got into Bitcoin I wasn't a "victim" and I'm still not one. Maybe you're the victim of your own preconceived notions.

lai-yin··on Ask HN: What is this user doing?
Haha sounds like fun! I need to dive into that more. Maybe for the next iteration of our website.

I tried emailing a few of these accounts from a burner email and got bounce backs on all of them.

Also just realized that since 12-15 another IP address 35.238.7.76 has submitted 4 more jibberish email accounts like uxjzylbwryxb@gmail.com.

So if they are fake accounts that bounce back, I guess that could hurt my deliverability rates with Constant Contact - not sure though. In any case I haven't been uploading them to my email contacts list so if he is trying to hurt my account it's been totally ineffective. And he'll need to increase his number of submissions by a few orders of magnitude to make a difference in the costs.

I guess my next step would have to be figuring out how to block multiple submissions from the same IP address or just reaching out to this dude and asking what's up. I need to learn more about him first since he works for someone kinda influential in my industry.

lai-yin··on Ask HN: What is this user doing?
Thanks for the suggestion. There is no visible counter on the webpage for users to see, and I'm not seeing one when I look under the hood in DevTools. I could be missing something though. It still would be odd since given my industry and where this user works, I don't see much incentive for him to track my subscriber growth.
lai-yin··on The Matrix Is Unreal
The rendered actors look so close to reality but at the same time so obviously artificial...something is just off the mark. How would a cgi expert put it into words?

lai-yin··on Rothko at the Inauguration: A story of America in three scams
It was closed for COVID but I saw a sign last weekend saying a new installation would be opening soon.
lai-yin··on Rothko at the Inauguration: A story of America in three scams
Every time I've seen a Rothko in a museum I've felt underwhelmed. But the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas is something special. Quiet, immersive, spiritual. Secular spiritualism.

While you're there hop across the street to the Byzantine Fresco Chapel to catch their latest insane installation.

lai-yin··on There is currently no way to drive between Vancouver and the rest of Canada
As an American working in politics who's jacked into the daily Politico/WSJ/Twitter grind it warms my heart to briefly imagine that all Canadians get their news from quirky, local newspapers like this.
lai-yin··on Closing email with “thanks” gets the most replies
Any good synonyms for 'thanks in advance' to mix it up? "Look forward to your thoughts" etc.

lai-yin··on Are there more surviving ancient writings in Greek or Latin?
Fair point!
lai-yin··on Are there more surviving ancient writings in Greek or Latin?
Would be interesting to have a catalogue of endangered protocols/knowledge bases - similar to the endangered species list.

Bit of a tangent: just occurred to me that part of the story arc for the show 'Mr. Robot' is hackers trying to erase an entire knowledge base - the debt history of billions of people. The protagonists try to achieve this goal by peaceful means, but...okay I'm going to stop spoiling it's an awesome show check it out.

lai-yin··on Are there more surviving ancient writings in Greek or Latin?
The part about the extinction of the Punic language made me wonder - what would it take to utterly erase an entire branch of knowledge today?
lai-yin··on Food myths busted: dairy, salt and steak may be good for you after all
I love kefir and ryazhenka, but never had it without also having pasteurized milk mixed in the diet. Will definitely try it now I've been off dairy a few months. Raw milk sales in Texas are tricky, until this summer you could only buy on-site of the farm where it's produced. New regulations make it easier so maybe it will start popping up in farmers' markets.
lai-yin··on Food myths busted: dairy, salt and steak may be good for you after all
Alas - as much as I enjoy dairy (especially goat milk), I can't drink it without causing a psoriasis breakout. How the heck does a trait like that make it down the tree?
lai-yin··on China has forbidden under-18s from playing games for more than three hours/week
Lots of things. To name a few - printing literature, building a website, salary for a coordinator to schedule the hundreds of meetings that will come up, and salary for a communications expert who can strategically articulate your position to legislators and their aides.

I know all of that sounds distasteful to some people, but the alternative is not the utopia they imagine - it's Chinese authoritarianism.

lai-yin··on China has forbidden under-18s from playing games for more than three hours/week
Lobbying is a beautiful mechanism of democracy. Anyone can register to be a lobbyist. Any organization's members can pool money together to form an association which represents its interests to legislators. I worked as a Congressional staffer on Capitol Hill and saw firsthand how it works. We met with lobbyists on both sides of every niche issue you could possibly imagine.

There's no perversion of government caused by lobbyists. On net balance lobbyists are beneficial - and sometimes they're all that stops a 20-something Legislative Aide from drafting a terrible piece of legislation which the Member only faintly understands.

lai-yin··on Language records reveal a surge of cognitive distortions in recent decades
5 years ago my therapist handed me a sheet of paper titled "Checklist of Cognitive Distortions." Ten negative modes of thought. I didn't immediately grasp how ingrained each one was in my mindset and habits - it took years and I'm still learning.

And one thing I've learned is that there is a wide incentive to embed cognitive distortions in the news, stories, and attitudes which comprise culture. Telling people they are victims of more powerful forces beyond their individual control.

Victimhood mentality is the worst mindset a person can have. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies.
