l8rlump··on Widely used chemical strongly linked to Parkinson’s disease
I note that this and the Nulon brand that I’ve used list TETRAchloroethylene rather than trichloroethylene as a constituent. I wonder if that’s any safer. The Wikipedia page[0] says it has been described as a possible "neurotoxicant, liver and kidney toxicant, and reproductive and developmental toxicant ... a 'potential occupational carcinogen'"

l8rlump··on Apple just lost its lawsuit trying to ban iOS virtual machines
Maybe, but combined with the downplayed stripping of features from the iCloud web interface, I'm still skeptical.
l8rlump··on Apple just lost its lawsuit trying to ban iOS virtual machines
iCloud web UI. Sorry, I just tried again and you can add tasks, but you can't set a due date or time, which I rely on heavily. You used to be able to do this until they went to the "new" Reminders. They gave us a prompt to upgrade to the new reminders, but you don't realize that you lose these features, and as far as I can tell, you can't go back after you "upgrade".
l8rlump··on Apple just lost its lawsuit trying to ban iOS virtual machines
They want to sell hardware. I'm reminded of this every day when I can't use Apple Reminders and Calendar properly on non-Apple devices. I have an Apple phone but use a non-Apple computer. You used to be able to have a web interface to Reminders, but they changed it and now you can't add tasks in the web interface. No worries then, let's use Caldav. Hmmm, can't add a Caldav server to iCloud anymore. Ahh, we can add a Caldav account to iOS! Nope, it doesn't obey the sync schedule. You can set the schedule to anything but it just syncs when it wants to, maybe every couple of hours if you're lucky. I might be cynical but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a ploy to get more people into buying more of their devices.

This software [1] on something like this hardware [2] work with the Airtag ecosystem, and won't ping any warnings. Beware of the ones lacking the external timing components. The battery won't last as long using the internal oscillator.

I have a chat always accessible with the below prompt to help me learn another language:

Can we use this chat to translate between English and xyz? If I enter an English word or phrase, please translate it to xyz. If I enter a word or phrase in xyz, please translate it to English. If my spelling is incorrect, please attempt to correct it, offer your suggested spelling, and then proceed to translate.

Didn't you hear? 2023 is the year of Linux on the desktop.
l8rlump··on HP have updated their printers to ban ‘non-HP’ cartridges
Not only this, but our HP Pagewide inkjet machine will even refuse to use genuine ink if it’s “out of date”. I.e, its manufacture date was more than a couple of years ago. Also consider that the ink can sit on the shelf at the store or Managed Service Provider for this entire time and therefore go into landfill without ever being used in a machine.
l8rlump··on My daughter's school took over my personal Microsoft account
Your article resonated with me. The last straw for me was when MS Edge signed me into itself without my input or permission. I don’t know why that was the last straw but I just felt really violated by that. Thankfully Linux on the desktop has come really far. It truly is a breath of fresh air.

l8rlump··on Ask HN: How does one make a bit-perfect CD rip in 2022?
If we're talking about making an accurate rip of an audio CD, I'd recommend Exact Audio Copy with the error correction options enabled. I think it's Windows only though if that matters.

> While I think it is certainly fair to talk about the policies of other countries, I don't think just because another country has a different policy necessarily dictates that policy is better or worse.

Other countries compared to who? Not everyone here is from the same country as you :)

I don't think anyone is making a value judgment based on where the policy is from.

l8rlump··on Tell HN: HP printers force you into agreement
Those Pagewides also have expiration dates programmed into their inks. If you install one that's "out of date," the machine will just tell you that it's incompatible. I haven't come across another brand with use-by dates on their inks. Maybe that's why the error message is so cryptic.

The other one (with the bigger Pagewides at least): they had a problem with the formulation of the black ink, where the constituents would separate over time. They changed the formulation and that formulation doesn't dry properly on their own photo paper. I wanted optimal quality photos, so I went through the specific calibration function for the HP Advanced photo paper. Because of the way the machine shuffles the page back and forth in the machine to perform the calibration, all the black was smudged and the calibration would fail every time. When HP support eventually realized I had a point, they told me calibration on HP Advanced photo paper is "not supported." I bet they remove it as an option in later firmware, if they haven't already. I have never dealt with a more user-hostile company than HP.

l8rlump··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
Interesting stuff.

In classic xerography, yes, the toner is moved around electrostatically. But it also needs to have magnetic properties (either intrinsically or by means of developer) to form a magnetic “brush” which is presented to the drum. Think of iron filings mixed with toner on a piece of paper and a magnet on the other side. The right static charge will be able to pull the toner out while leaving the iron filings behind.

l8rlump··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
The waste toner that's not transferred to the paper and cleaned off by the cleaning blade, needs to go somewhere in the cartridge too.
l8rlump··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
"Mono-component" toner is toner that is magnetic in its own rite, so it doesn't need separate developer (iron powder) to make it magnetic. I believe the original mono-component toners had magnetite in them, but I believe now there's non-magnetic mono-component toner too.
l8rlump··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
Clean, but don't lubricate. They need to grip the paper :)

l8rlump··on HP LaserJet Tank – Refillable laser printer
Not only that, they've released firmware that invalidates even their own older-generation cartridges after they changed the ink formulation. You may have success by downgrading the firmware (they will happily downgrade). Might have to speak nicely to your HP dealer to obtain it though.
