kyleslattery··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2018)
SEEKING WORK - US Remote (Philadelphia)

I love helping companies resurrect old Rails apps. If your app hasn't been touched in a while, has big performance problems, or just needs some new features, I'd love to help you out.

You need to build a backend for your mobile app, but you don't have the time to do it right. I'll build and manage your backend API so you don't have to worry about it, and we'll work together to help "futureproof" your app, to help you remotely manage your app, rather than constantly resubmitting it.

SEEKING WORK - Remote (based in Philadelphia, PA)

I build and manage custom backends for mobile apps: so if you have an app that needs server/cloud infrastructure behind it, you can focus on your app, while I focus on the backend that powers it.

I'm a mobile app backend specialist—I'll build, monitor, and maintain the backend services and API for your mobile app, so you can focus on what you do best. I primarily work with Ruby on Rails.

kyleslattery··on Every freelancer starts out undervaluing their work
For me, reading blog posts helped build my confidence to be able to ask for higher rates—seeing that lots of other people charge over $100/hr can really help to convince yourself that you're worth that.

You are right though, that reading blog posts is not going to create that change—for me it really came the first time I said what I thought was a high rate ($135/hr), and there was no pushback at all from the client. I was kind of amazed at first that they thought I was worth it, but with one success in the bag, it gave me the confidence to move forward.

Some more recommendations: the book "Apollo" by Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox is really excellent as an overview of everything that it took to get to the moon, as is the HBO mini-series "From The Earth to the Moon"
kyleslattery··on Git Cheatsheet
You can even collapse the first one into a single command: "git pull remotename master"
kyleslattery··on From a useless Git Diff to a useful one
Not sure if it does exactly the same thing, but on GitHub, if you add ?w=1 to the end of a diff URL, it'll show it with whitespace ignored.
kyleslattery··on Poll: What do you use for deploying code?
We're using Ansible, and so far I've really been liking it. Super simple to set up, and the syntax is extremely easy to write and follow.
kyleslattery··on Designers Complaining about iOS7
The first beta of iOS 7 is only available for iPhone. I'm guessing they're not done with the iPad version yet.
kyleslattery··on Checkout github pull requests locally
Also, if you delete the original branch that the PR refers to, the PR branch still has all of the commits.

kyleslattery··on Apple Apologizes for Its Maps Problem
Why do you say that? Google didn't make the the Maps app in previous versions of iOS, Apple did—they just used Google's data.

This post explains that a little bit: http://brockerhoff.net/blog/2012/09/13/boom-2/

Essentially, his conclusion is that micro USB can't support everything Apple wants the connector to do.

kyleslattery··on Why Apple Made Three iPhone 5 Models
Because the iPhone 5 doesn't have an extra antenna, it won't support simultaneous voice and data: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/09/13/verizon-iphone-5-will-no...
kyleslattery··on A tale of the supreme competence of Neil Armstrong
Yeah, and from what I've read/heard about the incident, he just casually went along with the rest of his day, like nothing even happened.

Here's a great photo of it: http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2012/08/neil-armstrong-19...

Sounds like if you buy the Kindle version when it comes out ($5), he'll get a direct cut, which is nice.

kyleslattery··on The Apollo 11 Journey in Photographs
I haven't read either of the books you mentioned, but "Apollo" by Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox is also excellent. From the looks of it, the paperback is hard to find ($125 on Amazon!), but the Kindle edition is only $8.
kyleslattery··on Sparrow acquired by Google
The email Sparrow is sending out, looks like there won't be any future feature additions:

  Hello,

We're excited to let you know that Sparrow has been
acquired by Google! You can view our public announcement
here, but I wanted to reach out directly to make sure you
  were aware of the news.

We will continue to make available our existing products,
and we will provide support and critical updates to our
users. However, as we’ll be busy with new projects at
Google, we do not plan to release new features for the
  Sparrow apps.

It’s been an honor and a pleasure to build products for all
of our wonderful users who have supported us over the
years. We can't thank you enough.
We look forward to working on some new and exciting
  projects at Google!

kyleslattery··on Apple, Google Just Killed Portable GPS Devices
One big reason to keep using a dedicated GPS is offline support—as far as I know, both iOS and Android require an internet connection to calculate a route, so if you don't have cell service, you're out of luck. Since dedicated GPS devices have everything locally, they just do all that work without having to talk to a server.
kyleslattery··on Space Station grabs SpaceX Dragon ship
"essentially being parking"

I gotta say, that is one hell of a simplification—launching a rocket into space and meeting up with another craft, already in orbit, is a little more difficult that parking your car. :)

kyleslattery··on Apple to drop Google Maps in iOS 6 for in-house Maps?
I imagine it would just keep on working exactly the same, except that the map tiles will look slightly different.

Yes, I love this. I store my 1Password file in Dropbox, so in a pinch, I can log into Dropbox on someone else's computer and grab any password I might need.
