kwelstr··on C.S. Lewis on the Reading of Old Books
You are so right. I am reading West with the Night, an excellent book that didn't sell well when first published in 1942 for various reasons, from bad timing during WWII to being under advertised. Almost forgotten until 1982 when someone read Hemingway's letters praising it, found a copy of the book and persuaded the publisher to re-issue it. It became a best seller.

>Ernest Hemingway was deeply impressed with Markham's writing, saying "she has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with words, picking up whatever was furnished on the job and nailing them together and sometimes making an okay pig pen. But [she] can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers ... it really is a bloody wonderful book."

Just an aside, you can ignore the dot on your email, or add as many as you like. Google ignores periods on email addresses. Just google it... :D

On the other hand, Pilfered Pollen is a great name for a rock band! :D
kwelstr··on Stacking concrete blocks is a surprisingly efficient way to store energy
And that's the problem, tell me 10 miles and it will always be 10 miles. Where I live, in a rapidly growing city, 15 years ago it would take 15 minutes to downtown from my house, now it takes 25 or 30. It's the same distance but traffic has increased significantly in a short number of years.
kwelstr··on Stacking concrete blocks is a surprisingly efficient way to store energy
"On a hot July morning, I traveled to Biasca, Switzerland, about two hours north of Milan, Italy"

Ok, sorry for the off topic, but this annoys me to no end.

Two hours by plane is about 1400 miles, by car about 120 miles, by bicycle about 25 miles, by foot maybe 6 miles, so why not give distance by miles or km? Even if we are talking by car, then how do you know there are no traffic jams on the way, or bad weather?

</please ignore rant>

There is nothing of value to read here, so...

Let me say just this: click bait.

kwelstr··on Mice with 3D-Printed Ovaries Successfully Give Birth
Fantastic, if this really translates into human ovaries it will greatly expand the viability of otherwise unfertile couples, and together with better health care and fertility drugs we can tremendously increase the "threatened" human population. We'll finally be able to overrun every other species on the planet, including ants and bacteria. Yay humanity! </s>

kwelstr··on Translations of the Dao De Jing
That has always been my favorite translation, by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English, and the book is beautifully illustrated. https://www.amazon.com/Ching-25th-Anniversary-English-Mandar...
kwelstr··on ‘I Fundamentally Believe That My Time at Reddit Made the World a Worse Place’
I used to have an reddit account from the first year reddit came out and I finally decided to delete it this year. I kept going into smaller and smaller subreddits because the ones I used to like, askscience or askhistorians etc. grew too much and became non enjoyable for me. At the end even the smaller subreddits were a waste of my time. I feel good about this and I don't think I'm going back to reddit.
kwelstr··on Tesla Looked Like the Future, Now Some Ask If It Has One
Tesla high valuation is the only thing that has prevented it getting bought by one of the big car companies, and that's a good thing. GM used to buy smaller competitors to take them off the market and just keep the name as a token of the brand. Hundreds of players from the first half of the 20th century got swallowed into a few brands.

Tesla has pushed the car industry forward decades in a few years. The big players were just competing in price and size of vehicles and never taking risks. Elon Musk has the vision and charisma to execute and move Tesla to the forefront of innovation, keeping everybody else in its toes trying to catch up. I don't think the market cap will fall anytime soon for this company.

kwelstr··on Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Steps Aside, Focuses on Initialized Capital
Reddit is done, I deleted my long time reddit account last month, it has become a circle jerk and even small subreddits are mostly useless. I remember when it was a real source of interesting news and comments. Hacker News is my online forum now and sometimes I even check slashdot for all times sake.

kwelstr··on Bitcoin hits $10,000
Yes, that was written at the very beginning of bitcoin. The thought is that bitcoin can be divided into 100,000,000 satoshis and a dollar can be divided into 100 cents, so to make 1 satoshi = 1 cent means 1 bitcoin = 1,000,000 dollars.
kwelstr··on First detection of the missing half of normal matter in our universe
We should assume by default that every headline is clickbait now, unfortunately this is the business model of the internet. It's not good for accuracy and most articles are just a headline and some inane filler up words. I hope we'll smart up and find a better model for news soon. :/

kwelstr··on Things cryptocurrency enthusiasts probably won't tell you
In my opinion, the regulators should focus on exchanges applying KYC and make the exchanges function the same a stock exchanges. If I buy a stock in the US through a brokerage house, they have my info and every year they send me a 1099 with my profit/loss for the year that I give my accountant to add to my income tax report.

Once the exchanges are regulated like that it would be very difficult to launder money or avoid paying taxes on profits.

kwelstr··on Things cryptocurrency enthusiasts probably won't tell you
> Few people pay taxes on [their Bitcoin holdings]

>>This is tax fraud.

It is not; you only have a tax liability when you cash out, not when you hold, you could cash out and have a gain or have a loss and you need to reflect that on your income tax for that year.

kwelstr··on Bitcoin Gets Close to $5,000
No, there are some that don't use proof of work, so no burnt energy. Bitcoin is the king right now and Ether the queen, and those two do burn energy.

kwelstr··on Finance sites erroneously show Amazon, Apple, other stocks crashing
Wow, that's crazy! What algorithm did this, or maybe it's some scheme manipulation for profit? You can never be sure when something like this happens, flash stock crashes have a history that's muddy at best. :/
