kwelstr··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Oh no! I read that one as a teenager. Hunting!
kwelstr··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
Among the ruins, one wall stood alone. Within the wall, a last voice said,

over and over, “Today is August 5, 2026, today is August 5, 2026, today is …”

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this theorem which this margin is too small to contain. ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

kwelstr··on Show HN: A Dalle-3 and GPT4-Vision feedback loop
Bad art is always depressing :( Edit: I mean, I am an artist and I've been using AI for some ideas and maybe from one in a hundred tries I hit something almost good. The rest of the time it's the same shallow fantastically cheese type of variations.
kwelstr··on Windy.com: global weather website with live filters
Windy also provides with embedded location webcams. Very cool to track the storm as it moves north.
kwelstr··on Writing one sentence per line

kwelstr··on Please Stop Using Grey Text
I resorted to an extension that changes all font colors to custom or just night mode. Browsing on black background and white text is best for my eyes.
kwelstr··on Study on quality of sleep when pet cats choose location of slumber
This! I know for a fact that my cat changes sleeping places if he detects fleas and will not move back to the old spot for a couple of weeks. Flea management from a cat perspective.
kwelstr··on The Eyes Have It (1953)
Philip K. Dick is having a little fun with a badly written paperback story or novel he must have found somewhere, and writing a cool science fiction story out of it. It is humor.

From the preface: "A little whimsy, now and then, makes for good balance. Theoretically, you could find this type of humor anywhere. But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way…."

kwelstr··on Clothes from 8k Years Ago Were Made from Trees, New Research Suggests
This is interesting, they were using bast fibers from oak trees, or fibers that sit between the bark and wood of the tree. They are soft fibers that can be collected and weaved into cloth.

Wikipedia has an article (1) and pictures of modern bast fiber weaving in Norway.

kwelstr··on The Klimt Color Enigma
Great work, I greatly admire Klimt's art and these paintings were such an important part of his artistic development and so sad they were destroyed on purpose so the other side wouldn't have them.

That website is a pain to read on a desktop computer thou... maybe ok on mobile?

kwelstr··on Greek Delivery Giant Efood Faces Major Backlash over Worker’s Rights
Yeah, redundant will work too. It's an oxymoron because social media.
kwelstr··on Greek Delivery Giant Efood Faces Major Backlash over Worker’s Rights
"I think this just blew out of proportion through social media." is an oxymoron.
kwelstr··on 2+1=4, by quinoa
For most types of rice, you'll always use a ratio of 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. When the water is gone the rice is done. Some rice like arborio for risotto take even more.
kwelstr··on Brown: color is weird [video]
Thank you.
kwelstr··on Brown: color is weird [video]
Thank you, as a painter this has bothered me for a long time.

kwelstr··on Build a WhatsApp Chatbot with Python, Flask and Twilio
In the 90's I built an IRC chatbot, at the time users were naive enough to think it was a real person, so I kept adding conversation lines. Over time it grew into thousands of lines and some people came back to the channel just to chat with it. My friends and I had some good laughs, good times heh.
kwelstr··on Why was it believed that the Aztecs greeted Cortés as a deity?
<<Imagine if it would have worked the other way around - indigenous Americans carrying a germ that would have traveled back to a Europe making great plague look like a child’s play.>>

Syphilis spread in Europe after Columbus returned from the Americas and was devastating even if not to the same extent.

kwelstr··on NASA aims for first manned SpaceX mission in first-quarter 2020
I've been reading the life of Napoleon III (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon_III).

He <<commissioned the grand reconstruction of Paris. He launched similar public works projects in Marseille, Lyon and other French cities. Napoleon III modernized the French banking system, greatly expanded and consolidated the French railway system and made the French merchant marine the second largest in the world. He promoted the building of the Suez Canal and established modern agriculture, which ended famines in France and made France an agricultural exporter. Napoleon III negotiated the 1860 Cobden–Chevalier free trade agreement with Britain and similar agreements with France's other European trading partners. Social reforms included giving French workers the right to strike and the right to organize. The first women students were admitted at the Sorbonne, and women's education greatly expanded as did the list of required subjects in public schools. >>

But then, he was Emperor of the French (the last one) and had absolute power... What you propose we do with NASA is something similar in long term vision, but then again, we live in a (?flawed) democracy where any long term investment is hotly contested and annihilated. I wish we could find a better way, a new age of enlightenment so we could finally do great things again.

kwelstr··on MoviePass Worked Out Great
According to the Wikipedia entry he won in court but they are still in court to collect money.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max-Herv%C3%A9_George

>>By 2015, up to 50 court decisions had been rendered against Aviva France. In September 2014, the French Supreme court, the Cour de Cassation, ruled in favor of the George family, determining that the life insurance contracts, as drafted with the "known price" clause, are legally binding under French law.[18] Nevertheless, George is still in court against Aviva, having won on the principle of the legality of the contracts, he now needs to have his prejudice recognized and valued in a second ongoing battle.<<

kwelstr··on Lilium unveils five-seater air taxi prototype after a successful maiden flight
Thank you for that link, it is more in depth than the OP and talks about noise pollution:

"He said that the ambition for an app-based on demand service would not mean “landing in every garden... You’d be working with regulation around the world, integrating with public transport systems where they have them. We’re coming at a respectful way of thinking how people live, how we create corridors and not just fill the skies with these things.”"

kwelstr··on Lilium unveils five-seater air taxi prototype after a successful maiden flight
Taxi service, from airports or from any open field? Because, how loud is this thing? I wouldn't enjoy it landing close to my house.
kwelstr··on Advances in Weather Prediction
Similar experience here in South Florida, the two weather apps I am currently using not always agree on the next day weather and often are wrong on the same day weather forecast. It seems to me that there was better accuracy a couple of years ago and somehow they have degraded. I am puzzled :/

"...and having sown a tract of land with corn, waited until the grain was fit to cut."

It has to be a grain other than corn (maize), since that one came from the Americas.
