kunqiana··on Ask HN: Those starting new side projects in 2018 – Show and tell
I been working on easyinfograph.com for a few months now. Plan on featuring it for product hunt when I am done with a few more features.
kunqiana··on Solving the problem of open source contributions - contrihub.com
It would be nice if I can search for projects using specific programming languages. Also why can't I just upload the project I need people to contribute without using github?
kunqiana··on Why 37signals Doesn't Hire Programmers Based on Brainteasers
I think your code is off by 1.
kunqiana··on Why 37signals Doesn't Hire Programmers Based on Brainteasers
Just out of curiosity did you learn scheme primarily through books? Do you actually use the language on a daily basis? Maybe you are a lisp hacker?
kunqiana··on Why 37signals Doesn't Hire Programmers Based on Brainteasers
Thanks for the tip, but when I tried to run it under mzscheme I got the error: map: all lists must have same size; arguments were: #<procedure:+> () (1). Also could you explain why set! and list-ref are bad?
kunqiana··on Why 37signals Doesn't Hire Programmers Based on Brainteasers
I tried to recode what you did in scheme for practice

    (define (pascal n)
      (if (= n 0) (list 1)
       (begin
       (let ((L (pascal (- n 1)))
           (ret (list 1)))
       (do ((i 0 (+ i 1)))
           ((= i (- (length L) 1)))
           (begin (set! ret (append ret (list (+ (list-ref L i) (list-ref L (+ i 1))))))))
       (append ret (list 1))
        ))))
kunqiana··on Linus's first version README for git
I have a question, why did git grow so popular? What was better about it?

Edit: To down voters I think this question is important because it helps us understand why certain softwares are successful despite other successful competitors. I am not trying to start a flame war on which version control system is better.

kunqiana··on Doom 3 source released
hi I got his error, on ubuntu 11.04. I moved the base folder to the neo folder but it still didn't work. Is it because it's missing the game data?

kunqiana··on Ask HN: I'm an unemployed programmer in SF that will work for minimum wage
we definitely need more stories like these to balance out the belief that doing a start-up is some how "easy". The reason is not to discourage people but to let them know what they are in for so that they can prepare better. It would also give some CS undergrads second thoughts about dropping out of college with the attitude that start-ups are easier.

kunqiana··on 32 years on, K&R's "The C Programming Language" still stands alone
It was used for my programming class, however the professor recommends K.R for experienced students who are new to C.

kunqiana··on Interview with Magnus Carlsen, the current #1 chess player
"feeling good" seems a bit generic here. I doubt he means the same thing as inspiration. The competitive nature of chess and the fact that it is a "game", is usually enough to motivate someone to work harder after winning a few games (ie warcraft). Where as in writing and writing software there are more mental blocks and success and gratifications are generally slower, and also harder to get back on track if you start "feeling bad". So I think discipline is more important in activities that takes longer to feel gratified.
kunqiana··on How to Win Friends and Influence People Summarized
This is the problem, most people don't even know if they are being a jerk or not. I thought I had good social skills until I read HTWFAIP. It made me realize how socially inept I was. Turns out the main message in most social intelligence books is the emphasis of empathy; it is actually a hard skill to learn and one that's usually underestimated by the majority of people especially geeks.
kunqiana··on Short Chat Server in Clojure
does anyone know a chat server in scheme? It would be helpful for me.
kunqiana··on I don't like you very much
see Paul Graham's essay on See Randomness, (http://paulgraham.com/randomness.html) it might or might not be true for your case but personally it makes me feel better when I am in similar situations by maybe seeing things in better perspective. A lot of times when I am confused about someone's actions toward me I tend to think that it must be about me and to make it worse I exaggerate it in my mind. Sometimes it isn't rational to always expect a rational response from other humans. We are all humans after all, and we make mistakes just like everyone else, a little understanding goes a long way.
kunqiana··on Will AI Surpass Human Intelligence By 2020?
perhaps in certain domains of knowledge such as chess.
kunqiana··on Ask HN: Self-Study or Take a Class in Programming?
I was on the same route as you (in arts) however, recently I switched to Computer Science and math and took arts as extracurricular instead. If you really want to be good at programming it is probably best to take programming classes because it forces you to focus and learn faster. Hacking by yourself might be fun with no pressure, but you will need to fill a lot of gaps all by yourself (unless you have been hacking for a long time, you probably don't even need a cs degree). Then again, since you want to do web application, it doesn't need a lot of the theory that a cs degree demands. So you might want to see if your school offers programming intensive classes and try those. The reason I switched is because my school restrict arts students from taking math and cs courses (plus I didn't enjoy arts courses very much). If your school has no such restriction you can probably consider taking lots of programming classes.

Has anyone read the structure and interpretation of classical mechanics? Is it good? It's free as well. I only studied first year physics. Sharing any experience reading that would be appreciated. :)
