This actually works!

kubatyszko··on The computer that helped win World War II
I have a major problem with that article, it completely ignores Polish mathematicians' contributions who literally GAVE the brits the codes 5 weeks BEFORE the start of WWII.

kubatyszko··on Which NPM package has the largest version number?
the one with -1 obviously ;)
kubatyszko··on The MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge
Reminds me of a "stable window" app gadget from mid-2000's that used the built-in accelerometer to make a window stable irrespectively of laptop's tilt.
kubatyszko··on Microsoft BASIC for 6502 Microprocessor – Version 1.1
ditto! It was really a nice touch (pun intended since touch is what I'd use to produce such timestamps)
kubatyszko··on Intel's PCI Vendor ID is 0x8086, There are many more like that in the database
Doh, my mirror server had some issues. Try again, I removed it from DNS rotation.
kubatyszko··on Intel's PCI Vendor ID is 0x8086, There are many more like that in the database
I randomly stumbled upon Intel's PCI Vendor ID being 0x8086 which attracted my attention, so much so that I scanned the entire database looking for other fun and eye-catching ID's, and found quite a few.
kubatyszko··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
HTC magic was just about that size ! (and it ran whooping Android up to 1.6 I believe). It was a 2nd publicly available android phone, right after the HTC with Dream.
kubatyszko··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
What really baffles me is that as a society we allow say a 7 year old to take on debt!
kubatyszko··on Redis is open source again
Sure, but the damage is done already, and it's AGPL too.
kubatyszko··on Two new PebbleOS watches
doh, should have read the full post ;)
kubatyszko··on Two new PebbleOS watches
I remember that my Pebble 2 (HR) over time (pun intended) would develop play around the rubber button area especially on the right side. Eventually the rubber covering the buttons would break off. This was common to the point people were making 3d-printed replacement parts. See https://help.rebble.io/pebble-2-buttons/ What's the expected longevity of the buttons this time around, and will you have replacement parts available ?
kubatyszko··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
The last bastion of the old Internet, end of an era!
kubatyszko··on Ask HN: I want to create IMDB for open source projects
Like SourceForge.net ?
kubatyszko··on How to ripen and store avocados
finally an article that gives more context on the five minute window between avocados being not ripe and then shortly after they're rotten ;)
kubatyszko··on The high cost of expensive housing and how Auckland fixed it
Well, Auckland probably has a lot less NIMBY's so there's a good chance it might work out...
kubatyszko··on WinPopup (2001)
brings a tear to my eyes. I ran a local ISP with over 150 subscribers. You can imagine the havoc after folks discovered they all could use WinPopup (since obviously everyone's domain was "WORKGROUP"...
kubatyszko··on Want to learn Linux but scared to damage system
Run a VM (even if it's slow) or rent a cheap VPS (lowendbox.com is my go to), you can get a cheap Linux server for maybe $5 a month.

And you know what ? I highly advise YOU DO DAMAGE the system! many times over, and over. This is the best way to learn. Do experiments on that Linux, one at a time. You ARE going to break things, and that's okay. Learn how to fix them - you'll be a master in no time. Yes, this means running "rm -rf /", see how the system reacts to that (keep a shell session open, but also try opening another session, such as via SSH). Try to fill up a drive, fill up memory, see what happens etc etc.

Cheers

kubatyszko··on Diablo 1 for Web Browsers
It's so good, even the old trick for copying items works !
kubatyszko··on Email Is Async
Oh joy of large corporations where a coworker would walk up 3 seconds after sending an email asking "have you seen my email?"
kubatyszko··on VLC media player banned in India
It must be because VLC allows people to watch pirated content. Which would be the most ridiculous reason to get banned for.
kubatyszko··on Carlos Ghosn’s Brazen Escape from Japan
The 99% rate is NOT because the system (prosecutors, judges) is "good", the rate is so high because system is structured to bully anyone arrested to admit to the crimes. You're basically coerced into confession, whether or not you did it.
kubatyszko··on Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Unconscious After Shooting; Man in Custody
I'm not sure hunting deer in Nara is allowed (it IS known a "deer city" and deer freely roam the streets. Maybe permitted outside of the city), but of all places where someone could have a shotgun - Nara is definitely one of them.
kubatyszko··on Engineers investigating NASA’s Voyager 1 telemetry data
This so obvious. Aliens figured it out and are spoofing Voyager transmissions.
kubatyszko··on Brendan at Intel.com
Coincidence with Netflix resignations and/or layoffs ?
kubatyszko··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
Spent $40k on a great life and business LESSON!. That's not bad at all.
kubatyszko··on Russia is abandoning SSL certs in favor of their own
They should also roll their own crypto...
kubatyszko··on Ask HN: Joined FAANG, immediately stopped getting recruiter messages?
haha, since I joined FAANG, my recruiter messages like tripled !
kubatyszko··on Adding unusable RAM for tax reasons
My boss in the early 2000's told me a story where in the 70's, they would bring in computers from West Germany to Poland, and there were restrictions on how "powerful" they could be due to a ton of restrictions. So they would get a lot of spare parts with each computer, bought separately, to make them usable as intended.
kubatyszko··on Tesla Q4 2021 Vehicle Production and Deliveries
What is puzzling to me, is that despite beating delivery expectations (meaning they did make and deliver more cars than planned), the delivery of my model X I'm in the line for did get pushed back from January to February. Something doesn't make sense...
