ktzar··on How the Catalan government uses IPFS to sidestep Spain's legal block
I've heard pro-independence people twisting facts for over 20 years... Not surprised anymore.

Democracy is deciding new law based on current law following people's desires... Like it or not, every day meter of Catalan soil belongs as much to a Catalan woman as to an Andalusian man...

Nobody in his right mind would say that Catalonia is an oppressed region by Spain's government... Quite the opposite actually.

ktzar··on Java for beginners
"Properly commenting code is so often overlooked when developing software and it is a damn shame".

I'd change that to, "commenting code that is self-explanatory is so often overused when developing software and it is a damn shame"

In the very same article, there's a function with the following JavaDoc description "A simple add implementation that performs addition on two integer values". Nothing I can't get from actually "knowing how to read code".

ktzar··on Opus 1.2 Released
I've compressed 30 hours of one of my favourite podcasts in less than 100MB... And voice parts are almost indistinguishable from the original.

https://github.com/slashsBin/phabulous seems to be using the standard... The emojis look helpful.
ktzar··on Many Canadians are living on credit rather than staying within their means
I'm sorry, but people not having just a basic understanding of how debt works is not 'the system's problem.

After reading the article I can identify a few things that would've raised a huge red alarm in my head if it was me: - Don't spend $12k in holidays right after you're fired and have a couple kids. - C-Sections are quite normal these days... It'd great that you want to be with your wife and the new babies... If you can afford it! Most people can't. - Using loans that have an interest of 590% APR... Sorry, you have to be quite ignorant to sign that. Even the worst credit cards have an interest that's a fraction of that. That's definitely not cheap credit.

I know many Canadians... And people with that little financial knowledge is definitely not that common. And yes, most people take more debt than what they should, but the case portrayed in the article should give way to a very different headline "Couple chains badly financial decisions".

I did a while ago a simple implementation of k-means in Javascript, it shows how the process converges for cluster finding. http://ktzar.github.io/js-k-means-clustering/ code: https://github.com/ktzar/js-k-means-clustering
ktzar··on Ask HN: What are the Madrid and Barcelona tech scenes like?
One of the things you'll miss coming from countries like the US or the UK is proper houses for a reasonable price and at a reasonable commute time to the city center.

I'm a Spaniard living in the UK since 7 years ago and last year I considered moving back for personal reasons... When people say that housing in London is more expensive than in Madrid, check for actual two-story houses, with a private garden and garage, less than an hour away to anywhere in zone 1 by public transport... There are almost none, and the few are actually more expensive than in the UK.

Also, most of my Spanish friends get home around 8pm, since they work until 7. I'm so glad that I can be home with the kids at 5:45pm, and work remotely a couple days a week. That's very very rare in Spain, so beware.

and iOS had been the name of Cisco hardware OS for ages... They don't really care.
ktzar··on How I Used Twilio, Python and Google to Automate My Wedding
I didn't go as far as using automated messages with my guests, but

- organised everything, from guests attendance to guests in tables location, in a huge Gsheets with my wife and a few close relatives.

- did a mobile game for Android and iPhone that was a quiz about me and my wife to be with over 200 questions, that still, 2 years later, people still play at and try to get higher in the leaderboard.

- programmed a Raspberry Pi that showed a slideshow of over 500 pictures of us with our guests since like forever. These pictures were also printed and hanged around the venue for them to find them and take them home.

I also did 10 programmes in 10 different programming languages that printed the food menu (to be used as per table printed menus), but my wife wisely thought it wasn't a good idea.

ktzar··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
That's an article from almost 2 months ago.
ktzar··on Hero – A handy, fast and powerful Go template engine
I've seen a few articles from Golang users saying that, after trying to fight the standard library in many ways, they just end up using it since they realise it's the best balance between usable and extensible. Taking how great the Golang templating engine is, I'm not sure this is a step forward.

Main reason: capacitive touchscreen display. They were last to understand how they were enablers of a new way of interacting.
ktzar··on Docker for Mac and Windows Is Now Generally Available and Ready for Production
Short answer, yes. Medium answer, images your Dockerfile is based on are still run in a Linux environment, even if it's virtualised differently.
ktzar··on The Money Letter That Every Parent Should Write
In most EU countries the letter you'd need to write is very different since, as long as you have a decent job, you'll get a decent pension which will allow you to live comfortably as long as you own property by the time you retire.

Reading some of those letters made me realise how different risks families have and take in the US and the EU.

Is there a chance a repo with a .md version or an epub can be shared? It's quite hard to read a 100+ PDF document without printing it.
ktzar··on Electric Generation in Spain – Latest 24 Hours
I find it so awesome that some days 50% of the electricity comes from wind... Just great. A good example.

Concentration solar... It melts salt that still provides energy for a few hours. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS10_solar_power_plant
ktzar··on Homeschooled with MIT courses at 5, accepted to MIT at 15
Some people force maturing, when maturing comes on its own... And by doing so they loose childhood, which never comes back.
ktzar··on How I ended up working illegally in the UK
If you have Italian or Spanish grandparents it would've been easier to apply for either of those passports and then you're granted to work and live in the UK forever.

In the UK, voting aside, it's easier to live with a EU passport than with a UK one. And cheaper, by the way; renewing your UK passport is prohibitive.

ktzar··on Json vs. simplejson vs. ujson
The usage of percentages in the article is wrong. 6 is not 150% faster than 4.

ktzar··on Bitcoin is growing even in africa
If something is zero (bitcoin usage on africa a few years ago) it's certainly more likely to grow than diminish.
ktzar··on Roadster 3.0
It'd be awesome to get the old batteries adapted to be used in off-grid homes, where they could be of great use.
ktzar··on ParisIsBack – The Paris Tech Guide
It's very hard to live in Paris if you are not fluent in French... Or you're doomed to live amongst ex-pats, which defeats the purpose of the experience.
ktzar··on Our Development Workflow
Testing after merging with develop is a very, very bad practise. And there're plenty of tools to help you don't do that, just kick a build to run all your tests, which will add a tick or a comment to the branch's PR. And never merge anything without that tick or comment.
ktzar··on Perceptual Image Hashing
Hashes are supposed to change a lot with small changes in the data source. I wouldn't call this hashing, but fingerprinting, and there're plenty of fingerprinting algorithms for images, some related to steganography.
ktzar··on State of Text Rendering (2010)
An article like this deserves an image.
ktzar··on I've never seen a language's style guide recommend avoiding comments before
As another commenter said above, comments shouldn't say "what" your code does, but "why" you do it,... when you need an explanation. There's no better comment of what code does that code itself.
