ksvs··on Why are Europeans the whitest people on the planet?
It long predates that. European slave girls (and boys) were particularly prized in the caliphate when Europe was a backwater.
ksvs··on Why I gave away my company to charity
That's what I was thinking. 5% is the upper limit of the fraction of his wealth that a rich person could safely spend each year anyway. So his income is no different than if he'd kept the money. The only thing he has lost is the ability to change his mind about where the principal goes when he dies.
ksvs··on The 40-30-30 Rule: Why Risk Is Worth It
Ordinarily.
ksvs··on Too old to start an IT career (C# programming or whatever) at age 50?
Setfocus looks pretty dubious: http://seeker.dice.com/olc/thread.jspa?threadID=12196&ts...

If you start searching for "setfocus" in Google, the top suggestion for the next word is "scam."

ksvs··on The Power of Race
I noticed that too. What if the source is something that can't be shrunk?
ksvs··on "Arrington Has a Point" says offer provider - 10% satisfaction with mobile
This is where class action suits come in handy.
ksvs··on What Startups Are Really Like
They should print this at the top of the comments on each TechCrunch article.
ksvs··on Ask HN: Your favorite Startup School moments?
Mark Zuckerberg yelling "yeah" from the audience when Mark Pincus said you should control your board.
ksvs··on Google's Better iPhone
Windows won in the end (at least market share wise).

When was the end?

ksvs··on Why I gave marijuana to my autistic child
"On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups."

ksvs··on Will the Manhattan Project Always Exist?

ksvs··on Ruby on Rails Workshop for Women
I wonder if Harvard policy allows them to discriminate in this way.
ksvs··on Paralyzed Rats Walk Again
"Paralyzed Rats Walk Again"

Maybe there's hope for the record labels after all.

ksvs··on Google Releases A Nuke. Apple Won’t Win This Fight.
There are few reporters who wouldn't accept leaked documents. Some of the most famous news stories were based on leaks.
ksvs··on Ask HN: What's your income worth to you?
"And yet it seems clear that deep down inside, I would love to try it."

You've already decided what you want. So the only real question is whether you can afford it. That should be fairly straightforward to figure out.

It's not necessarily a bad sign that it pays less. Jobs that suck have to pay more, and vice versa.

ksvs··on 6000 intriguing people you want to meet before you die
It's a little suspicious how many of the intriguing females are physically attractive.
ksvs··on Why I’ll Never Be A ‘Web Guy’
"The reason most people want to program for the web is that they’re not smart enough to do anything else."

One thing he doesn't understand about the web is the dangerous power of blogging. With one sentence you can permanently brand yourself as an idiot to tens of thousands of people.

ksvs··on The brutal truth about America’s healthcare
"the most serious medical needs get treatment first"

If that's the definition of universal health care, no country I know has it, because there is no country I know of that has successfully banned cosmetic surgery.

ksvs··on Secrets of the TechStars method for winning the pitch and getting the girl
It works for me, at least now.
ksvs··on Rockstar technologist wanted - Cambridge, MA
I would change a few things if I were you. People are going to give you a hard time for (a) using the R word, (b) the implication that writing your actual app is merely a matter of "wiring up the back end," (c) the email address.
ksvs··on [dead]
Sounds fishy. They claim to have 25 people, and yet they're not paying salaries? I wonder in what sense they "have" these people.
ksvs··on Ask HN: I have yet to do the one thing I wish before I die
Seems like it might be worth separating the goals "learn math" and "get degree." Presumably it's the former you want. And if so, might there not be people good enough nearby that you could hire as private tutors? If there's a university nearby there should be: grad students.
ksvs··on How Not to Get Screwed by VCs
Or better still, actually say something useful.
ksvs··on The Truth Behind Last.fm Story: Techcrunch conned?
"techcrunch's traffic no doubt rose well above average during the whole affair"

Hmm, let's check:

http://siteanalytics.compete.com/techcrunch.com/

Nope, it was down that month.

ksvs··on [dead]
You may as well ask why people choose to live in Upstate New York.

Few do. Upstate NY is losing population. In fact the whole northeastern edge of the US is losing population, except one county in NH.

ksvs··on Open letter to Blackboard: $1M to charity if you drop patent litigation
Wow, that is a completely bogus patent. It is just a description of their software, translated into a patent. There's not one aspect of it that's non-obvious.

Students should organize a boycott of them. That would put pressure on them to stop this nonsense.

ksvs··on Open letter to Blackboard: $1M to charity if you drop patent litigation
Anyone have a link to the patent Blackboard claims they're infringing?
ksvs··on US workers waste $2.8 billion/yr by failing to shut off their PCs at the end of the day
Mostly because computers boot so slowly.
ksvs··on Do you find that misspellings of common words set your "bozo bit"?
It does for me. But you can get some false positives this way. There are some smart people who can't spell well, e.g. because they're dyslexic.
ksvs··on Ask YC: Table based layout - part of the learning curve, or just deprecated?
Rather a leading question. What about the third option: that there's nothing wrong with tables?
